What are you growing this month? May is still a great time to sow carrots in containers, so I'll be doing another batch this month following this method here kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXK8nWxna5tobtE. Radishes aside, I don't think growing food could be any easier than that! Have you tried growing carrots in containers yet? Happy Gardening!

Thank you Paul and you're very welcome. I try and keep the videos to the point (otherwise I might waffle on forever) but do let me know if I've left something out or if you have any questions!

Alex I don’t have a greenhouse or Pollytunnle yet, can you give me advice on growing tomatoes outside. Regards Paul

Hi Paul. It's a broad topic and location dependent but if all goes well, I'll be producing videos on pretty much all of the following steps as the season goes on. But don't fear! There's absolutely no need for a greenhouse unless you're in a very extreme climate. Assuming you're at last frost and first frost isn't for at least a few months, plant out when above 10C overnight (probably in the next couple of weeks for the UK, probably good to go for much of the US). Smaller tomatoes ripen earlier, the Sungolds could be two months away, while beefsteaks take longer in my experience. If you grow vertically, you'll get more sun exposure and reduce disease issues (as I type this I'm planning out a short video on building a support structure), similarly if you prune away some lower leaves you'll get more fruiting and less disease issues. Main issue with outdoors is moisture levels - the soil dries faster and you have no control over downpours, so mulch away with a compost/straw/woodchip layer to cover the soil and limit evaporation . Also consider automatic watering or otherwise ensuring watering is regular to avoid getting split tomatoes. Avoid getting the leaves wet and give the roots a good soaking every few days, maybe increasing in frequency as the season goes on (depending on soil type and weather conditions). I use a soaker hose which you bury under ground as it just waters the roots and I let it run for an hour on a timer (I'm also planning out this video). Harvest during/after the hot part of the day and on a day when they haven't been watered to increase flavour. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Thank you Alex I’ve got dwarf French beans on the go 😊

Great to hear from you Terry and good luck. Seems like we've passed the frosts in quite a lot of places so they should do well if they get a good start. Fingers crossed!

WoW that video was great! Tomatoes grow wildly here in California, we have volunteers shooting up all over! You would like our garden :)
@alexgrowsfood Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. I'm sure I would, to an outsider, California seems a great place to grow plants. Are you in one of the high-numbered gardening zones where you can overwinter peppers outdoors? Sounds a like dream!

@@alexgrowsfood I am nearly expert with tomatoes, but others, not so much! I struggle with Peppers as well as Cucumbers, which mostly got sun-scorched during our hot and dry summers here. I also worked hard on an automatic watering system for the whole backyard - you would love it 😁 It's a Rain Bird system with Wi-Fi 😁
