Nice video Lindsay. Question please, is fishing the bung in rougher water any good as I’ve always imagined the buzzers going up and down in the water column quite fast to be rather unnatural. Cheers Bud

hello, very interesting video! I really like the line assembly diagrams. do you use the blood knot or the surgeon knot ? We often have a debate with my friends fishermen about the surgeon knot on the bung, should we use the top strand for a better presentation or the lower strand which is more solid ? Sincerely from Belgium !

using 3 or 4 inches of strike wool attached to the loop on the fly line by about 5 inches heavy mono allows sight fishing with 18 foot + leader. The wool happily travels through the eyes of the rod.

Another cracking video ...buzzer fishing I haven't ever got on with but getting better at it and had my pb last week 15.2 lb with a home made buzzer was well chuffed ...using straight line tactics ...which is new to me ....started using it last year ....normally always used the washing line method......and after watching this video I am gonna try the fixed bung method with the spacing you have mentioned ...my local Stillwater is only around 13 ft at its deepest ....I usually use sliding bung but that's with bung fly never tried buzzers this way

Great video as always with the three methods clearly explained. The bung always divides opinion but I suspect the new Fulling Mill drop back bung might even cause some bung advocates to think it's a step too far. It's ust another float after all, isn't it? It will certainly catch fish that the standard bung would not. What do you think Lindsay, will you be using it?

You say about max depth for fishing under the bung 12 ft, now if your fishing to international rules the yes you will need to put your indicator on a droper. However, I also fish a sliding indicator, using 3 float/waggler stops. Put 2 on above your top dropper, thread you bung on, set the depth you want with the single stop ( which can be retrieved back through the rod eyes) this mean you can fish up to 20ft. Try it works really well when you know the fish are lying deep and you need to fish static. I also use pike pop ups as bungs so they easily slide up the leader.
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish Жыл бұрын
I like that idea John, I think I have tried similar in the past but your method seems better.
@christophero1968

I too have caught trout as deep as 20 feet under a sliding indicator. Another trick for deep water trout is using a Di7 type line, as long as the depth. Cast your flies out, count them down until they hang straight down, then s-l-o-w-l-y retrieve straight upwards, and hang on, as the takes can be savage!

Your four fly set up gives you 15ft plus from point fly to top dropper. How do you net your fish? Only asking as I've ended up standing on the thwart in a boat to land a fish when I haven't calculated my fly spacing properly 😢😢😢
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish Жыл бұрын
That’s a mistake on my part then as the spacing should be 4’ between flies giving a total distance of 12’. That’s my bad sorry at 12’ landing fish is no problem 👍

I use new Zealand indicator for the (bung) which is a moveable indicator..comes into its own if you have different depth from shallow areas where you can raise the indicator on your leader close to your top dropper to keep your point fly just off bottom or slide it down if your going into fish a deeper section on the lake.obviously knowing the depth of water your fishing is extremely important as not only so you can adjust the indicator but also to space the flies evenly on your cast.usually I will fish the bung up to 15ft depths.anything over that I will straight line them using a floating or midge tip setup.if fish are feeding high in the water then the washing line is also a great way as you said along with fishing dail Bach's and crunchers and if fish are feeding hard then I'd often put a comorant on the point and retrieve the cast steadily through the fish

Lindsay, another solid video. I’m from Arizona (southwestern US), and I hadn’t done much buzzer(chironomid) fishing until the last 5 or 6 years. I’m trying more of the straight line method and other methods you use in the UK as I can get bored watching a bung(indicator). I use the sliding indicator set up very similar to what Phil Rowley does. What I do is use a short heavyish mono foe a leader and use a tippet ring. Then I go straight flourocarbon to a small swivel. I use a bobber stopper at the top to show where I had the indicator set. Length depends on the depth I’m fishing. At the bottom of the swivel, I go 2’ of flouro to the fly. We are limited to 2 flies in this state. If I use a dropper, I attach above the swivel. It’s a little complicated, but works for me and allows me to fish a lot of different depths.. I’ve caught fish 15 feet below indicator. My set up. Thanks again for video
@lindsayiflyfish

That sounds great thanks for sharing your sliding bung method. Do you not find that it sometimes slips though?
@jbatina
@jbatina Жыл бұрын
@@lindsayiflyfish yes it has if you mean come loose, but move a few inches, no. The peg will make the hole bigger sometimes, sometimes it just slips for whatever reason. Used spider wire for awhile, and hardly ever came undone, but doesn’t sink as good as flouro. The bobber stopper help get the indicator back in place quickly. I have caught first 15 feet down in our hot summer months, and never could have landed them with the sliding rig

As ever full of great information. One key point that both newbies miss and experienced guys can ignore. Casting at an angle to the drift imparts more action and a natural presentation with the curve induced to the retrieve. Good tactic with the landing net while landing the drone. Even in the calmest of conditions on a moving boat. During a landing a slight breeze or a wake from a distant boat could distract resulting the drone in the water or hitting the boat damaging it or tackle. Please never go into reflex catch and release mode with that drone mistaking it for a trout. Too darn expensive.

Thanks for another great video Lindsay! It's so interesting to me how the bung is frowned upon in the U.K. I am in western Washington state, USA. Here in the Pacific Northwest of the States and up in western Canada fishing indicators on lakes is a go to method for many fly anglers. We use quick release slip indicators to fish up to 20' deep regularly. A balanced leech pattern paired with a chironomid or Diawl Bach (or 2 where legal) have put a lot of fish in the net in my neck of the woods. I will say we fish anchored here a lot as well...
