Which German state is the favorite among tourists? We will show you the top 3 federal states of the total 16! Each of them has a unique character: from the coast in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the Alps in Bavaria. And in between them there is a great selection of highlights: Saxony with Dresden, the Baroque city, North Rhine-Westphalia with the Cologne Cathedral, and of course the capital, Berlin.
Where do tourists favor going? And where is your favorite place?

You know how as a kid you don’t really appreciate that you have anything really special, because it’s just how things are? My mum was from Stuttgart, so I spent summers or Christmas there, wandering the Königsstrasse or Kräherwald, in the winter sledging down its many amazing hills or just marvelling at the beauty of the country’s oldest TV Tower (shown at 04:00). My grandmother lived in Baden Baden, so we’d spend time there, walking in the beautiful forests, and my great uncle had a house on the Reichenau, one of the most exclusive islands on Lake Constance, so we’d go out on his boat, nip over to Switzerland or down to the Rheinfall. I thought all this was normal. Well, it was normal for me. It was very different to my life as the son of painter and decorator from Birmingham that I lived back in England. Baden Württemberg is still my favourite place in the world.

The Stuttgart TV tower (1956) is not really Germany's oldest TV tower. The Berliner Funkturm has been built in 1926 and used for world's first TV transmission in 1932. - But the Stuttgart tower is the oldest TV tower built of concrete, instead of the earlier steel towers (like the Eiffel tower, BTW also used for TV transmission since 1943 during occupation and later). And the Stuttgart tower even was the first concrete-built TV tower worldwide and became the blueprint for similar towers all around the globe.

We've been going on holiday to Germany since 2008 and love the place. The place we've been to most has been the Rheintal, the gorge that lies between Bingen to the south and Koblenz to the north. This area is sublime, but in 2017 we decided we really must visit Berlin, so booked a ferienwohning in Potsdam and bought tickets for the Berlin-Potsdam area. So every day we visited somewhere in the two cities. Also, as I had drive there from Rotterdam, we explored around the country too. IN 2018, our last time, we drove all the way to a ferienwohning in a small village called Kunreuth near the town of Forcheim and visited Nuremberg, (naturlich !), and also Coburg, Bamberg, Rothenburg-ob-der-Tober and the area called "Little Switzerland". On the way back we stopped two nights to visit Aachen to see the tomb of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor. There are also sulphurous springs here too.

For cities only, you should take busses and trains. A car really doesn't make sense, unless you want to visit rural areas, landscapes, etc. Take a map. Put a flag on all places you like to see, draw a line between the flags, so you got your travel plan.

When I go to Germany I avoid the big cities , which unfortunately were flattened in WW2 , but outside these places there are many amazing and extremely beautiful small and medium sized towns which escaped major damage in the war : Bamberg , Regensberg , Heidelberg , Dinkelsbuhl , Tublingen , Rothenburg ..... etc etc

@@donnerwetter1905 yes but it is still a fact that you will find genuine historic and very beautiful buildings in the smaller towns and not the large ones . @@donnerwetter1905 I' m sorry but Koln is a big modern city , and apart from a few buildings it definitely lacks the charm of beautiful places like Bamberg , Regensberg , Dinkelsbuhl , Rothenburg , Tublingen and many more smaller towns , and even reconstructed Nuremberg and Dresden and not so bad Wurtzberg and a little less damaged Freiburg ......I love these German towns and am often saddened at the terrible destruction of history ....

@@donnerwetter1905 Yes I see your point . I was once looking at some pre war pictures of Koln , and as you say it did not have the same mediaeval feel as Frankfurt ...which as you probably know has recently reconstructed a part of its 'Altstadt '. I don't think much was lost in Berlin either ! ( outside of the terrible suffering of the civilian population). But Nuremberg , Dresden ,Augsbourg and Wurtzbourg were definitely terrible cultural losses ....

Being a native from Augsburg, I can confirm, that I appreciate the beauty of smaller towns (still standard in size from a historical standpoint). Augsburg seems to give eyn Fuckerle about its historic substance. Of course, there are a few spots, which bear the old charme, but they'll disappear sooner or later. (A minor thing that hurts me, recently, the old-ish cobblestones get replaced by light, grey cuboids. It takes a lot of the previous atmosphere). I've been to Rothenburg ob der Tauber four times, and yes, standing upon the Burggarten, beneath the green roof of trees, leaning against the wall, having nothing but green woodland hills and parts of the medieval town in sight, I do get emotional!

There are plenty of fabulous places in Germany, but there is a flaw in the video: It takes about visitors and the description about the top 3 among tourists. But: There must be a significant number of business travellers included in "visitors" that are not there as tourists. I like the smaller cities, the ones that were not devastated in the war. E.g. Cologne doesn't have much history left beside the cathedral after the terrible bombings. The same can be said for Munich, Hamburg any most of the major cities, unfortunately.

It's caring for the next guest coming, who needs parking also ! Treating everybody equal includes, to not preference one before the other. An important concept.
