I've read that fragrances have a shelf life from 1-10 years, with most being 3-5 years. If this is true why do people pay extra for older fragrances that wont smell the same as when they were bottled? Maybe a video on fragrance shelf life would be interesting for the community.
@andreidanielpetre4 жыл бұрын
@@MPerry-ox9qb Shelf life is a marketing gimmick, nothing more. Stored away from strong light and humidity, fragrances last decades. My father had bottles from the 70's that smelled great and super strong well into the 2000's.

@@MPerry-ox9qb I have fragrances I bought in the 1980's that still smell great, although it's very possible the top notes are gone and maybe some of the performance. Citrus notes especially are the first to go. I question how anyone can be really sure that what they're buying off of Ebay hasn't been altered in some way. Personally, I would never buy a vintage fragrance unless I found it at an estate sale or knew a friend who was selling it.
@Dervraka3 жыл бұрын
I've read that the reason older (60's-80's) men's fragrances were so strong and tended to pick a couple harsh notes like leather or oakmoss and just beat you over the head with them., was because they had to be to compete with the cigarette smoke filled social gatherings of the day. That's also the reason the classics have been reformulated and toned down a lot these days. When you do find a bottle of the original, a few sprays are usually strong enough to clear out an entire room.

Flagship Aramis is still a fabulous fragrance and will be forevermore. It is like one of your female colleagues said in an earlier video: yes, it's a "Dad scent," IF your Dad has been a badass his entire life, from having a van and being in a rock band in high school to being a heavyweight in a board room today. An Aramis TV ad said it years ago: "a statement of classical elegance for the established man." Aramis Havana is great too - all the Aramis fragrances in my collection - flagship, Devin, 900, and Havana - are among my favorites.

Ok, one thing that may be confusing about Polo, is that it was reformulated about 15 or 20 years ago but recently reformulated back again ( around 2019) to smell closer to the way it did in the '70s and '80s. For instance if you have a 2012 13 or 14 bottle let's say, it's not going to smell as great or string as either a bottle from the 70s 80s or 90s, or one from 2020. For almost 20 years in a row Polo took away the strong sour pine note and added a Christmas tree air freshener note. In 2019 they added the sour pine again and took out that Christmas tree air freshener crap. So it's complex when someone says new versus old Polo. My 2020 bottle smells amazing. But the 2015 bottle dose not. Just keep this in mind when searching for polo make sure you get at least 2019 and up. I thought it was me imagining things until I found other people saying that and even saw a video here on KZbin about how they reformulated it to a Glory Day. So happy it's somewhat back to og status

I enjoyed this video! Thank you! My dad wore Aramis Aramis and it smelled so wonderful. It was everywhere -wildly popular-as was Drakkar Noir and Ralph Lauren green. My grandparents gave me a bottle of the women’s Polo edp which was wildly popular for a while in the late 70’s/early 80’s. It had that cool red bottle that looked like the end of a cane. My father in law still wears the blue flanker. My former husband wore Grey Flannel and Z-14 in the early 80’s. I remember Grey Flannel being very strong if not overpowering with huge sillage. It was very distinctive. I loved Z-14. I chuckled at the Alfred Sung bottle. I have worn Sung for women for decades.I’ve looked for a new more updated scent for at least 10 years and I’ve not found anything yet that I’m wild about it lasts as long but the bottle is identical to women’s perfume. Sung for women hasn’t changed through the years that I’ve noticed. I still love it. (I recently purchased Miss Dior Cherie which is discontinued unfortunately). Sauvage is the bomb. My son wears it or else I’d buy it for my husband. I love it so much I’d consider wearing it myself! Love your videos-especially the ones for women but I like my man to smell sexy too! 💖

Pour Monsieur (edt) is one of my favorite classics. Harder to find the edt in the US, but it's worth trying to locate. Amazing citrus and gentlemanly scent with strong performance for an edt with citrus.
@nmoddentity84014 жыл бұрын
I have a number of these including Dior Fahrenheit, Eau Sauvage, and Dune. They're all lovely. I would add Quarum by Antonio Puig, a solid "old school" scent. Not quite as sophisticated as the Dior offerings but it is a good reminder of what the 80's powerhouse fragrances used to be. As for your theory on reformulations, it's hard to know why the old scents no longer are the same. Health regulations and the elimination of some components may be part of it. A scarcity of resources that create the need to find alternative ingredients? Reformulating to update the scent it to a modern audience? Whatever the case, reformulations seem to eliminate so many classic scents as a choice for modern collectors unless they want to pay outrageous amounts for "vintage" bottles. Such a shame.

My old school were Sir Canada Cedar - got from my German grandfather (discontinued), Givenchy Pi and Boss #1, Hugo by Hugo Boss (original formulation) and then the original Acqua di Gio a girlfriend bought me. Ooo I forgot I have that vintage Paco Rabanne Poir Homme too and the Grey Flannel.

Some smell better today. I cn think of Lagerfeld for Men, for example. The reformulation helped to make it brighter and preferable to many Lagerfeld enthusiasts.

Your number one takes me back to 1984 and holidaying in Ibiza. Sun and good times.

This list is all me. I have most of these bottles. I still need to get my nose on Jules though. As far as Animale Animale is concerned I have 3 bottles. Every one needs to try it.

Hello Sebastian and thanks for your work. As an aficionado to classic fragrances i enjoyed this video and learned some things very useful for me. I was in the verge to purchase Antaeus as a collector of Chanel fragrances, but after your words i changed my mind. Instead i have some new information that is going to be useful in new objetives. I understand there are too many brands and classic fragrances to talk about, but i missed in particular some words about MSL Opium for men. P.D: we share the love of Dior Eau Sauvage, a must for summer. Thanks again and greetings from Spain.
