In today's vlog, we spend an extra long day in Ketchikan, Alaska. We rented a car through Alaska Car Rentals for $100 for the entire day ($25 per person shore excursion)! Starting the day at Herring Cove, we were disappointed that no bears were out, but we continued up the road and were pleasantly surprised to have the hidden waterfall all to ourselves. Based on a local's recommendation, we attempted to hike Silvis Lake trail before a final stop at Herring Cove. After returning our rental car, we explored downtown Ketchikan by foot and visited the iconic Creek Street (red light district of Alaska!) Come along with us as we take in the beautiful sights and sounds of Alaska.
KETCHIKAN RENTAL CAR ITINERARY:
1. Herring Cove (bear sightings)
2. Hidden Waterfall
3. Silvis Lake Hike
4. Creek Street in Downtown Ketchikan

As a Ketchikan born and raised resident I can definitely say that getting a car and exploring out of the town is a great idea and I'm glad you got to see a bear! Some fun facts for you: the cannery that you saw there is actually a hatchery, where they collect salmon eggs from the spawning adults and will raise them into smolt before releasing them back into the ocean to give the babies a head start in life. However you were very close to a retired cannery right around the corner from Silvis Lake trail head and you can get a tour through Capefox tours that will allow you to explore it. Also that sea lion you saw was a harbor seal, real stellar sea lions absolutely DWARF a harbor seal and you could mistake them for whales if you don't know what you're looking at! Some recommendations for if you ever come back (which I highly suggest you do!) is to get another rental car and explore out North of the town because there's a lot more hiking down the Revilla road area and in Ward Cove, and you can walk around Ward Lake and see ducks, trumpeter swans, beavers, otters and more if you're lucky (and don't worry Ward Lake is an truly easy walk that will take you around an hour to finish the loop). You can also continue to drive farther down the main Revilla road past Ward Lake and get into the real sticks, and if you continue to follow the highway North you can see Totem Bight (state park) or if you go South again I HIGHLY suggest you go see Saxman, where many of my family members live in an actual village and where you can see another beautiful totem park and our Beaver Clan Tribal house where my cousins actually perform traditional dances inside! (You'll have to get a tour to see that) and you can also see carvers in person working on full-length and authentic totems poles, all carved by hand! And if you want a good tour of the downtown area that should only take 90 minutes to do I again, HIGHLY suggest that you go on the Where the Eagle Walks Downtown Historical Walking tour. You can buy the tickets through the Princess ships if you go on there again or you can message the walking tour on Where The Eagle Walks facebook! Definitely talk to more locals if you can if you ever come back and then can tell you even more awesome things to do!

Wow! Thank you for sharing all of the extra details! I'm curious, what is a smolt? We'll 100% b back to Ketchikan - it was so beautiful and the people were amazing. Thank you so much for the recommendations! They're bookmarked in our travel plans!!

@@HollyandAndrew oh so smolt is the stage in a salmon's life when they're starting to get too big for their home creeks so they swim out to the ocean to live the majority of their life, and I'm happy to hear you'll be going back! Oh and edit: some other tours I recommend would be Out to Sea Expeditions for smaller, more personable wildlife viewing tours on the water, again Capefox tours for Saxman, George inlet cannery, or White River (further down Revilla road), Kawanti Adventure carts (Kawanti also does ziplining I believe, but if you go ziplining make sure you do the zipline out at Herring Cove that actually goes over the estuary) and plenty more!

As long as you’re making enough noise you most likely won’t see many bears. But if you go to the creek south of town that’s where a lot of the bears like to go fishing

Any US phone plan should work in the main city! There will be little to no service for any carrier on the outskirts or when hiking. Enjoy!
