1. PhDs are expert innovators (they have to discover new information, not just regurgitate old information)
2. PhDs are masters of conflict resolution (they have their logic and work attacked by other doctors on a regular basis, and are better off for it)
3. PhDs are literally doctors of learning (a PhD means Doctor of Philosophy, and philosophy means knowledge and the ability to ascertain knowledge)
4. PhDs are adept problem solvers (they go from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm and can deal with the uncertainty of tackling the worlds biggest questions)
5. Competitive collaborators (they are self-starters who work well alone but also work well on teams and often collaborate to get large projects done, hence why most academic publications have multiple authors)

THANK YOU for your great eye opener video! I believe you like you were talking on behalf of me! I am a PhD with 23 years working in academia and research experience, with a great job and a very happy life! But three years a go I left everything behind and emigrated to the US to give my kids MAY BE a better opportunity for their future’s life! Tomorrow I have an interview, and your video was like blood in my body, it made me to get more energetic. THANK GOD to gave me this opportunity.

I am at the point where I am asking myself what the heck have i gotten myself into!!? But for all the reasons you named that is why I want to acquire my PhD. Especially as a problem solver in my community. If I can just enlightening others to want better in their lives, I am ok with that. I am 60...I have been working on mine since 2011, and about to run out of money. I have two classes to go, and trying to stay hopeful and focused. Thanks for this video

Great video but I never thought a PhD holder would be stuck in figuring out especially that they are learners and must provide solutions to benefit others but hey I think that's where the need for the superior unseen comes. As humans we can achieve all we think is great but the will of he that created us gives us much more. My prayer is one day I should be a PhD holder. I'm at a stage in life where I feel like I have outgrown what I do and nerd to move further. May the lord help me to attain my highest potential. Thanks for the video

Thank you, this was engaging and inspiring. Pearls of wisdom noted. I am in my last semester of earning my ph.d in Nursing. I work as a clinical nursing manager, and as an adjunct professor for a nursing school every now and then. It is sad to know that a PhD in academia is not as valuable. I make more money as a clinical manager.

@@CheekyScientist What is your take on professional graduate degrees such as an MD (medical doctor) or JD (doctor in law). These are pretty much worth their time and respected in the field, aren't they? Regarding the comment of @daya512523, I thought advanced nursing degrees offer much more opportunities than, say a PhD in biology, am I wrong here?

Do the figures given compare favourably with, say, the UK? (i.e. are the advantages of having a PhD analogous across the pond?). Or is this strictly for the US? Obviously British PhDs are a lot shorter at just about 3 or 4 years so I wonder if that comes with different challenges/advantages
@CheekyScientist
@CheekyScientist 6 жыл бұрын
Great question - yes, this is comparable. A PhD is valuable regardless and many of our UK Cheekies have these skills and report finding excellent employment.

but what if the Ph.D is obselete because superceding technology and processes are favored by the world instead and the only reason why they would take you is because they feel bad and have mega money but your Ph.D isn't smart to pay for anymore? like how small business mom and pop shops were then Walmart came in and people argue saying how they can use the extra money to pay for blah blah stuff?

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to highlight, Anthony, but a PhD holder possesses valuable skills beyond whatever his/niche area of focus may be. We've helped thousands of PhDs move into successful industry careers, regardless of major or research background.

I am not sure about what field you are talking about but in the engineering field, with a BS you can easily make more money than someone with a PhD; because in industry experience matters A LOT; and sometimes a bit more than education. In my first engineering job, just with a B.S , I was making less than than 58k, after working there for 2 years I switched jobs and start making almost what you said someoen with a PhD will be making. Now, I am only saying this because if you are thinking about getting a PhD for the money, you are doing it wrong. If you trully care about money then get a BS in Engineering work in industry for a few years and then get an MBA. I can guarante that with 3~5 years of experience + MBA you will be making over 100K. Note, I have nothing against PhD's. In fact, I will be quiting my job in a few months and taking an 80% paycut to pursue a PhD. I am not pursuing a PhD for the money, I am pursuing a PhD because I love learning, mentoring, research something that nobody else has done and my dream job is to become a professor! It trully annoys me when someone thinks that getting a PhD will get you a lot of money, thats not true and I have seen it! I work with PhD's, MS's and BS's everyday! Please, if you are pursuing a PhD solenly for the money; do yourself a favor and just quit after the MS and get an industry job.

Thanks for the insight, Martin Liza. That sounds like most PhDs - we love learning and discovering something new that nobody has shown before. Whether or not the priority is to make lots of money, there isn't room for all PhDs to stay in academia - especially in a high paying job with job security. Best of luck with your PhD!
