I think you guys are underestimating the amount of monsters with charm effects. Being immune to charm for 24 hours is good, maybe not 8th level slot good, but many times you can cast it the night before so it’s free all day the next day

Abjuration Spells has a great selection. My top 5: 1. Shield 2. Absorb Elements 3. Counterspell 4. Aid 5. Freedom of Movement Top 10: 6. Dispel Magic 7. Lesser/ Greater Restoration 8. Pass without Trace 9. Ceremony 10. Banishment Worst: Remove Curse. Not all curses can be removed. Mind Blank gives immunity to Psychic damage. Scribes Wizard can utilize this immunity with allies & turn their own Spells into Psychic damage like Fireballs & Meteor Swarms.

Top 5 for me. 1. Pass Without Trace. Surprise rules were written by an intern, and this spell lets you win Surprise (and thus, combat)100% of the time. Yeah, your rogue get 40s or whatever, but the actual bustedness is that you let to get everyone on the party to hit 20s even with clunky armor. 2. Shield. The single reason why spellcasters with medium/heavy armor & a shield just don't die. If Surprise rules were written correctly this spell would be top 1. You guys were correct in saying that you will multiclass just for this spell. 3. Absorb Elements. Loses points for not being very relevant early on, but its still nuts since elemental spells are gonna be the ones that do the most damage. For a 1st level slot you get to do what Rogues have to wait 7 levels for. 4. Aid. Completely underrated, one of the best ways to spend your slots. Use it mid combat to get multiple people up at the same time, or just precast it. 5. Planar Binding. Kind of an unfair pick because its soft-banned at most tables, but with free time and some pocket change you can pretty much win the game by making your summoned fey and fiends and celestials permanent, thus letting you have more summons. If there's actually high-grade enemies you can capture with this spell, even better. couldn't put it on the list but shoutouts to Forbiddance for making dungeons zombie and demon free with 20 minutes of prep time.

Planar Binding isn't at all an unfair pick. I'm not personally a fan, but I can totally see why you are.

I think shield and absorbed elements go hand in hand at higher levels. Get ganged up by melee fighter use Shield. Someone cast Fireball or Dragon's fire breath uses absorb elements. What one doesn't protect you from the other one will be useful. Usually only one of the two are a danger at a time. Note for mind blank: it's a non consideration spell that gives you immunity. The wizard of the School Of The Scribe can change the damage type to another damage type from a different spell. So you can get immunity to fire damage and is non concentration for 24 hours Illusionary dragon can I get the types fire lightning, acid, cold, necro or poison. Sunburst get your radiant damage. It also protects your mind from being read and at last 24 hours so you can cast it the day before. But generally it's not a great spell for it's level(8).

My gut feeling is that Mind Blank would be useful specifically in campaigns that I wouldn't enjoy playing in.

Unfortunately Armorer doesn't get Shield directly. You can use an infusion to create a tattoo to get a 1/day use but that's about it.
