That's the result of packaging the whole program in a try/catch to "safeguard" against crashing and graciously shut down instead. I would rather be notified of an unknown error than a) having the program suddenly crash (not try/catch at all) b) having the program notice the error, and just randomly shutting down without any prior notification (having a try/catch but not interacting with the user about it) In case you or anyone else who reads this isn't a programmer, a try/catch block is a way of error handling, you "try" to do something and if an error is "thrown" you "catch" it. If you don't do this, your program will freeze, crash, or unexpectedly exit when an error you didn't think of (as in with smaller try/catch blocks) happens.

Garbage, the battery doesn't last for at least 8 hours on power saving mode? Absolute shit
@ImKevan6 жыл бұрын
To be fair though, pretty much all laptop manufacturers make both ultra thin notebooks and more powerful full size laptops. I understand people are getting annoyed lately with companies trying to make things smaller for the sake of making them smaller, i find it kind of stupid too, but ultra thin laptops aren't really in that category to me, they have their place with students and other people who need a very light and portable laptop and are happy to sacrifice computing power, and people like me who don't care about size can still go out and get a full size laptop thats usually more powerful, has plenty of connection ports and has a full size keyboard. I personally think those all in one PC's you can buy are a bit silly, i think to myself why would you buy what seems to be a laptop crammed into a screen with no built in keyboard and mouse? but some people seem to like those too lol.
@ImKevan6 жыл бұрын
Yeah i can see how they have their uses. If you haven't seen/heard of linus tech tips videos, i'd check a couple of those out for a hidden desktop server type system, he messed around with building an ultra powerful server that multiple people could game simultaneously on via thin client type devices, it was pretty crazy, and probably the future of computers eventually i'd say, homes with one big powerful computer in a closet somewhere and just being accessed by wifi or LAN cable built into the house, then just use new smart TV's as slave devices to do everything on.

I have a 3 year old PC laptop that I literally use fewer than a dozen times per year (it's my field laptop for my telescope/imaging). I haven't downloaded or run anything on it except the essential image capture and control software, yet it takes longer to boot each time I start it up and launching apps has become unbearably slow. 3. Incessant software update nag alerts (Java, iCloud) 4. This one is the opposite of #3 in your video, but more related to bad UI: often bad software UI makes it too easy to click the cancel/delete button because it's 1 pixel from the OK/save/continue button, and there is NO confirmation to undo this and save your work. 5. Another great video that I somehow missed. Agree that cable connector trend toward the tiny is bothersome but the trend toward universally interchangeable USB connectors is infinitely better than a drawer full of proprietary cables that all go to who knows what. Also the ports at the device input seem increasingly weaker with so many devices failing due to detached solder connections on PCB’s, and paper thin PCB’s with torn traces. The old nuts and bolts connectors were clunky by today’s standards but they were also much more robust.

Wow, not one of those is in my top five. Mine are: 1) Fault intolerant user interfaces. Can't back out or fix an error or wrong choice. 2) Poorly designed login screens. Enter your email address or sometimes a user name and a password. When you get one wrong it doesn't tell you what was wrong so you keep trying. Then selecting the Forgot Password option you've got to type your email address again! 3) signing in to web sites when you're trying to complete a transaction and after the sign in you get sent to the default page, not the page you were just on. Related: Changing County selection with the same result, left on a page that isn't the one you were on before. 4) Error messages with no useful information. Something goes wrong and you get a message like file not found, which file? How about adding the file name and path? It isn't just files, most error messages give no information that can be used to diagnose the problem. 5) "Intelligent Software" that really isn't. Software that tries to be smart never is and there isn't a way to override it. I'll admit I'm biased, with 30 years of software development under my belt I know that there is no excuse for any of this in 2017! A software developer needs to understand that while they will only code this once, the users must live with their design every day. Every one of my top five should never be encountered after the 90s. Computing power is at an all time high, there are vast and rich development tools available and to ignore them and continue cranking out poor user interfaces is inexcusable.

Great video! Absolutely agree with your extreme peeve with SUBSCRIPTION SOFTWARE! It should become illegal to have subscription only software.

Robert Edwards You can blame TiVo for that. When people are stupid enough to pay $400.00 for a DVR, then spend an additional $10 to $15 a month for service, then those people are considered suckers. Just like Google Play, and their scammy in app purchase crap. When Microcrook, saw that TiVo was making a killing on their scam, they said why not use the same business model. Hello subscription ware.

My initial reaction to each point. 1. Computers warp time: So true. Too bad they can traverse in both directions... 2. Subscription Only Software: Nothing to add... You are correct. 3. Multiple Confirmation Requests: Unfortunately, I have worked in the field too long to fully agree with you on this. Yes, they are annoying. However, in the case of copying files, if you really don't want it to be idiot-proof, then you should resort to the command line and utilize something like robocopy. The CLI is what separates us from them in this instance. 4. Small connectors: Situationally dependant. Let us just say that the USB-C is at least easier to utilize than the previous iteration. 5. Small Cursor Keys: Just buy one that does not have smaller cursor keys. There are plenty of options in the sea for this. Manufacturers will go where the money is. Stop buying them, and they will stop making them. However, if you want a travel keyboard, there may be some room to compromise.

The odd occasional Window and dialog box of fixed size. That don't fully show there contents and you can't resize them! That bugbear for me still exists today has existed for me since my Amiga days. Operating systems that steal the majority of your resources, even when you increase your resource sizes (upgrading cpu and ram for example). This is why I want a lightweight version of windows 10, that removes the likes of the metro applications which were intruduced in windows 8. And generally a more optimised OS, so that you don't need to buy expensive hardware so that it runs at a decent speed. Also I think Microsoft need to rebuild windows from the ground up, because file explorer is extremely slow.

You are absolutely right about renting software because of piracy excuses. This excuse is not the real reason why they doing this, they want maximize control and profit, continuous income. That's why I skipped these kind of software and use another brand or open source suite. For example the underrated CorelDraw Suite, it's cheaper and got more a Windows logic operation. I like it allot, much better. Instead of MS Office Suite i'm using now Open Office Suite and it's working fine. Another thing that really anoying me is software changes because of changes (keep the upgrade/training carousel going strong) for each version. Change the look and feel, changed menu's, change locations of options, removing options/functions and so on. Really insane these stupid changes because of changes. Windows is a good example, hate Windows 8, hate Windows 10. Also the software coupling to hardware, thanks to UEFI, is really disgusting. Another example is Android, hiding/moving options or replaced it with obscure touch movements. Each new version is like a puzzle to it's previous version. Found an old phone with Android 3.6 and it's working flawless, easy to use and got a clear interface. Why on earth do you want to change that? Last thing I want to mention is forced obsolescence by software or external service dependency, the "it's time to upgrade" obsolescence. I got a Nokia N7, nice phone, hardware is in good shape but overall totally useless as a smartphone. Reason: Microsoft removed, redirects uri's to their own webservices so it doesn't work. You see this happen to games, consoles, smart-TV's, tablets, smartphones, settop boxes, computers etc. This is not only a disqusting way of doing business, but also an attack on the earth in the form of forced waste, people throw it away because it is useless hardware. Besides we destroying history, it cannot be emulated because complexity of the hardware and the dependency of external software. When it's gone we loose it forever. It's a bloody shame.

Changing menus, commands, etc. is bad. The worst shock I ever got was when I upgraded Pagemaker 6.0 to 6.5. Not only menus and commands were changed, but Adobe changed bushels of the keyboard commands, which drove me nuts! It was like having to re-learn the application all over again because I'm hopelessly addicted to keyboard shortcuts. A little unrelated under this thread is that I always resented Steve Jobs' attempts to enslave Mac users (and everyone else thereafter) to the damned mouse. The Mac didn't even have F-keys until Jobs got canned. The mouse has resulted in more cases of carpel tunnel than fleas caused smallpox and bubonic plague. Don't mean to trash ol' Steve. The main problem is that they use exactly same cheap "low-tech" alloys, plastics and assembly procedures on new connectors, as they did on old big ones. They just can't handle the stresses during regular use. All brand names should switch to better materials, assembly procedures etc. and problem solved, shure it costs more, but they need much less of material after all... If i can make them almost unbreakable with old rusty soldering iron and some different glues+heatshrink tubes, they could do it, in the first place, too.

Things like "Unhandled exception", "Memory Access Violation" & "Unisuppored whatever" are just SOME of those cryptic annoying messages I see and have no idea at all what it's about. Why cant errors be in PLAIN ENGLISH that ANY NORMAL person could understand?

@zachburke89067 жыл бұрын
Many programs have errors classified in error groups. The displayed error is rather just a group name and could be anything out of hundreds of errors. The main reason you don't get an English answer is that programs can have thousands of different types of errors(most being extremely uncommon) this list of errors is always changing, it would take a lot of work to figure out each error, find the cause, type out what caused the error, then maybe 5 people have the error and then it being fixed the next update.

It's only a matter of time before we get an error message which reads: "ERROR: PEBCAK." (Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard). Or "ERROR: ID-TEN-T." (Idiot) Or "ERROR: UIAFM." (User Is A F****** Moron)
@apexmike8496 жыл бұрын
Lazy programming. If you know how to detect an error, then you know which things have caused it. A long time ago, the extra space needed for a database of error conditions and their solutions would have been a problem, but not today. The other best alternative is to say "Error 1234567890 please visit www.o u r w e b s i t e .com and enter this code." Better still, have the application do this automatically if online.
@HudsonGTV6 жыл бұрын
Those are not cryptic at all. In fact, they are too broad. They are not meant to be useful to the user as the user is not the one fixing the problem. They are meant to be helpful to the developer since they are the ones actually fixing the program. Just send the developer the error code. It's not lazy programming! It's just developers don't know when exactly/where an error might occur in their program so they can't just handle every single error that could possibly occur.

Everything including OS's will eventually be subscription based but it has nothing to do with stopping piracy, its a money grab. Piracy will never be stopped fully, and dongles are not the answer. Software that has its important functions on a server that the client side has to validate thru is the closest youll get to stopping piracy, wether the software is subscription or purchased outright.

Windows 10 continues copying the other files, and only the ones affected by the confirmation dialog are on hold. At least they did that right, but everything else is worse (like no option to disable automatic driver updates).

The thing that really annoys me with computers is when things are not made to a well established and well functioning standard - like when some hardware manufacturers refuse to use the plugs that everybody else are using, or when some programs are not using ctrl+s for saving and ctrl+c and v for cut and paste, or when some videos editors output a file that no media player can actually play, or when some cameras use a memory card that is made for only that brand and therefore is impossible to find.

Largely unrelated, but did you try Beyond Compare from Scooter Software for file and folder synchronization? One of the best software I use, both Windows and Linux versions. Helps to sort out the file copy and merging issues.

I laughed a lot when the first thing you mentioned was the half-height arrow keys. It was the first annoying thing that came to my mind about computing these days. Glad i'm not the only one!
@Darth120007 жыл бұрын
Here are some additionnal annoying things i'd add to the list, personnally. ;) #1 : Cable management. That thing, while necessary, is still a bloody pain to the soul each time you have to touch it. You'll get headaches and turn your fingers in impossible positions before you can clip those cables right to avoid air flow problems, assuming you found a way to begin with depending on space in your box and cable length... #2 : Power supplies. There's no shortage of problems with them. There are some no-name prower supply brands that, ironically, have become well known now for the amount of crazy lack of quality they give us to the point they are dangerous to use (Heden, Advance, i'm looking at you...). And then there's the problem of non-modular power supply, that introduces a ton of useless cables you'll need to manage for nothing. Finally, there are many aspects for high quality power supply that count only if you intend to assemble a 10k$ configuration, meaning to the standard consumer it's just marketing bullshit... #3 : non-portable hardware. It's incredible in 2017 when so many and many more softwares are distributed in all 3 big types of systems, we still see hardware, even USB ones, that are windows-only, or mac-only, or windows+mac but not linux (never linux, for some reason). Have the designers considered they are missing on potential customers and therefore on money ? Right now i'm forced to send back a composite to USB video capture device i intended to use as an interface between my N64 console and my computer, reading it in VLC. The video portion is so bad it's as if an analog TV from the 60s with lost signal would have better image...

Ironically, your number 1 and 2 could be fixed with USB type-C, which is on Chris' list. Number 3 might be as well, where the more and more common generic IC's have opensource drivers and therefore and not bound to any platform.
@Darth120007 жыл бұрын
I don't know how you can solve with USB-C the fact that you need to bring a SATA power cable from your power supply and a SATA data cable from your motherboard both all the way to your inner disk, and keep those cable out of the way of air flow ? I did mention air flow didn't I ? Cable management is a problem outside of the case too, but there, while USB-C will make sense, air flow issues will not... :p And power supply, er, you'll have to explain me how in the world USB-C has anything to do with choosing your power supply correctly ? As for #3, there's no point in having drivers if the hardware itself does not follow. The composite to USB video capture device i used as example has been stated both by vendor and users in amazon US as being linux compatible, well it's not. Yeah you have image and sound, but if it's as good quality as toilet paper i fail to see the point... And hence my problem here : it took me 1 full year of searching to find that one linux compatible variant, and it's a failure. :( I also have a linux compatible video capture card. If you want drivers, you need to submit a form to the vendor, stating stuff like your business plan and the like. WTF ?
@norullzz7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I semi-misread your statements. USB-C has no place inside a case, I was thinking about the heap of power supplies underneath my desk. In theory a single USB-C cable from my PC to my screen could provide power and data, resulting in less power bricks but putting extra strain on your internal PSU. If this replaces a few 5V chargers which will cost me at least £10 a piece, spending that extra bit on the PSU makes sense. PSU's will never be cheap or trivial. Drivers will always be a pain, the generic IC's will only make the job of the hobbyist who painstakingly reverse engineers the device easier, no replace that guy...

Darth Killer why never linux? simple. it doesn't has enough market share. why? because pretty much the reason because everyone uses windows is because it came pre-installed on the original IBM PC, out of which clones were made, which evolved into what we are using today. also, microsoft makes deals with oems so that the pcs they make will only use windows, probably with aditional mechanisms to avoid the execution of other operating systems, linux is open source, and the linux comunity doesn't really care about their market share, because they do it just for fun.
@Darth120007 жыл бұрын
Always the market share thing, despite the fact it was revelant in 2010 but not anymore now. Even more so since Windows 10, as you may have noticed Windows global market share (all versions) has seriously decreased over that last months, while both linux and mac have increased theirs (and i wonder why...) The goal of a company would be to max out profit. While i can understand in 2010 that market share was too small to be worth of much effort, it's been now a fw years since this was no longer true. Hell, there are companies dedicating entire services to OEM linux computing, like Dell, and some are 100% focused on it, like System76. Last I checked the latter was doing just fine, how do you explain that is the market share is as low as you say ?
