Why can't it be both? The word, "strong," has different meanings-- all of which are typically applied to men's characters. Why is a woman's character restricted to some non-physical meaning of the word?
@attractivecrayon7579
@attractivecrayon7579 4 жыл бұрын
edrica webb it very well could mean both. But you see, I’d rather have a women with an interesting personality who goes through struggles and has her own way of coping with these struggles and makes decisions that can be understood and sympathized with, rather than a woman who’s only character trait is to punch things. You feel me? A female character could very well be physically strong. She could be a goddamn body builder for all I care. But if that’s all she’s known for, then what’s the point? If she’s gonna be a body builder, she should be a body builder with a personality. Write women with personality’s. Don’t let one trait define them as a whole.

And once in a while I would wear a dress to work and suddenly everyone will be giving me compliments on how good I look! Seriously I get a comment from everyone in the office I talk to or meet on the hallway! Like???? I'm the same me I was yesterday in those baggy pants? But only when my wardrobe fits into what you see as womanly and I fit into a standard, only then I look good? And this is only if I wear some cutesy dress, no one tells me I look good in a skirt, combat boots and iron maiden t-shirt, except the guys who also like iron maiden but they like the shirt they don't say "omg you look so good today!" Daydream Ricecake well a little bit. The stereotypical “female fantasy” puts this idea into to women’s minds that men should be head over heels in love with them at all time and never want to do anything but romanticize the woman of the film. I feel this is just as damaging as the stereotypical “male fantasy” which is an insanely hot woman who cooks and cleans and does everything in their life just for the man. Both I feel are extremely superficial and should not be represented as they are in movies.
@rohantumkur7915
@rohantumkur7915 4 жыл бұрын
CrystalCritter The “male fantasy” you’re referring to is not degrading to women. While there are many examples of when it is, the MCU and porn are not examples. In the MCU their are many female super heroes (not to mention the most powerful one in their universe is female) and although they’re insanely attractive, so are the men of the films. So many of the MCU films include men with their shirt off and amazing bodies. And the porn industry is purely sexual and that’s not appealing to any “male fantasy.” You can tell this because 1 out of every 3 porn watchers is a women. The males in porn are just as sexualized as females. Yes there are films that are degrading to women and they should be called out on that, but films degrading to men shouldn’t get a special pass just because they’re the “female fantasy.”

Rohan Tumkur My comment wasn’t intended to shame either gender or for their fantasies. My brother in this scenario meant for it to be degrading, yes, but my mothers reply was only to make him reflect on the things he say and think. Male or female fantasy, either way we enjoyed the movie. And I know for sure my brother enjoys a fair square of romantic comedies himself.

Andrew Smith yeah I would kind of elaborate by saying that the “fat man” trope is equally as prevalent in cinema. Actors like Jonah Hill (who to give credit where credit is due has diversified in later years) capitalized on being that “fat friend” with the perverted taste and just being a very crude human i.e. Superbad. Not to say that the trope is invalid and arguably destructive in what it means to people who have issues with their weight and invalid representation, but i would argue that it’s not really a sexist trope so much as just an overall negative trope both sides deal w/.

Rodrigo Partida okay but consider the possibility that showing such gruesome treatment of women can have a backfire effect. Seeing it too many times can desensitize viewers and warp their reactions to graphic and detailed violence towards women. one that irks me the most occurs in almost every action movie. i noticed it in pirates of the caribbean when almost every male pirate was ugly, rough-looking and shabby. the two main female pirates were conventionally gorgeous and had flawless makeup. it was infuriatingly unrealistic and kind of ruined the cool shabbiness of the movies, because, as a woman, i couldn’t insert myself into a similar narrative and enjoy it. they were also incredibly young, had amazing bodies and were not funny unlike every other male character. give me ugly, shabby and funny women pirates too!

+woooudo I wasn't going to reply to this, but your comment has been bothering me since you posted it. Girls start feeling self conscious as young as age nine. There are some instances where even four year olds are caught up in being "pretty" and "ugly." We are given Barbies and Monster High Dolls that have one inch waists and three inch chests and hips. These dolls are also wearing heavy makeup. Everywhere we look, we see photoshopped models and celebrities looking "flawless," not knowing that having no flaws is a flaw in itself. All of this-you guessed it- is a form of "fantasy." Fantasy does not appear out of nowhere, though. It comes from the mind of the movie director, doll designer, model photographer, etc. When we are young, we see these tropes in TV and cinema and are shaped by it. I realize men have issues as well, which is something that should stop, but it is more damaging to girls and women with how prevalent it is in our society. Fantasy is dangerous if not considered properly. For thousands of years, women's bodies and viewpoints were affected by men. Little girls in China had their feet broken and bound, stunting their growth and ability to walk, all so they could appeal to a man. You men do not even realize just how much power you had and currently hold. We make up half this world but you outnumber us in every high dollar and high power position. You are the ones angling the cameras to accentuate the butts of a female character, you are the ones telling models they're too fat, you are the ones who do the casting so these above mentioned cinema tropes can happen. There are women that can be just as bad as men, I know, but we are a part of a brainwashed culture afraid to love our own bodies. We are afraid to consider a life without a boyfriend or husband. We are afraid that everyone around us is judging us each time we step outside. Sexism exists, because it has destroyed the mentality of thousands of women who struggle each day to find one thing they like about themselves. I don't know if I will actually get through to you, but I hope you learned something of value. Have a nice day.

What constitute a “woman’s beauty” is constructed out of men’s fantasy, which no woman could ever achieve, but such images of fantasy are reinforced through many forms of media that it difficult for women to have a strong love for their bodies in the male-dominated entertainment industry. In such an hostile environment, women have to develop their own self of sense and self-worth through almost impossible set of beauty standards created by and for men. Good work.

Someone's probably made this point already, but I feel like the first trope about the hot/young girl with the old/below-average man stems from (and perpetuated) the idea that 1. women need to be attractive to find love 2. men are entitled to women simply because of their gender and their gender's social superiority. Like you said about the "ugly girls" always getting a makeover; they're not worthy of a guy until they're conventionally attractive (but for male characters, the opposite it true.) And if they're a lot older, THAT'S the plot focus because then it's a story about how she "defied all odds." It's sooo annoying. It keeps telling girls that guys don't need to worry about their appearance, but girls do, and that it's unnegotiable.

I think it's something else than this. With exceptions, it's that women a valued for their looks (and only their looks in some movies) while men are valued for their... Well, not looks. Capabilities, I guess. Which is why you can have a female ugly rocket scientist who won't ever find love, because she's all about work and not about looks and no matter how good she is at sciencing, it won't matter, because that's not what's worth anything in women. Well, the trend is shifting. A bit.

Okay so much of this confused me . 1. No people do that because when you make a movie, at least in today world of ruined cinema, your goal is to make money. When you have an attractive character that brings in more money plan a simple. They aren't going to lose millions of dollars because people like you are insecure about their looks. The only reason I would have problem with them casting attractive actress is if the storyline of the character revolves around their physical appearance like Beauty and the Beast. Besides that people have a right to cast whomever they like. 2.No sane man thinks he is entitled to shit that is a blatant lie. If they did why are men's the ones that ask the girl out why do men usually have to propose, if anything women feel entitled to a men's attention simply for being a women. You are spinning everything into sexist when it simply isn't.

@yes ikr Exactly that, people mostly seem the "Problem" with the expectation on women´s appearance and body care, while bashing men, but the same happens the other way around, try to go to any school, workplace, or activity and see all the women picking up men older than them, if you are a guy and want to pick a girl your age, you are out of luck, as women will try to search for someone "older, wiser, richer". The only men i´ve seen or heard that where able to bypass this stereotype are those that are straight 9-10 in every way, looks/smarts/charisma/etc.
@bialynia
@bialynia 5 жыл бұрын
@@XxBlackWarri0rxX The problem is that young people of similar age are often a very bad match. From sex drive to emotional sensitivity to intellectual needs they're very often in entirely different places. Young girls get the easy way out by being able to openly date older guys while young guys are left to be frustrated. But then they get the privilege to 'stay in the market' practically indefinitely and go for women of any age while older chics have it harder and harder every year. Conclusion: everybody would be happier if older women dating young guys were seen as equally normal. It's more common than the movies show but in reality, both parties may be ridiculed. Because men are thought that older women are inferior goods and women are taught the same of men who are not yet set in life.

The last trope about punishing women I think is particularly interesting as it pertains to horror films. You mentioned that the men in these films die in less gruesome and invasive ways. I think the point of these deaths in horror films is less so to illustrate another victim in the horror film so much as it is about shedding another layer of protection away from the real victims in these films, of which tend to be women and the disabled. When those that are considered the most able bodied and capable of defending themselves, i.e. the men are unceremoniously being picked off one at a time, it’s to raise the stakes and the danger level for those that are still left in the film to deal with the murderer. This type of writing I think depends heavily on 2 presuppositions by the audience, that men are disposable, and that women are vulnerable.
@vtheory7531
@vtheory7531 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with this as well, and while the stereotype that all women in film cannot defend themselves as well as men is still kind of sexist, I think that horror films try to draw out scenes with 'vulnerable' victims like women, children and the disabled because the audience does not expect them to fight off the attacker and it gives more horror feels.

I think the first one also emphasises that men are viewed as attractive for most of their lives where as women are only seen as pretty under the age of 40 and if there is an older woman, she is either seen as ugly or only for her mind rather than even being potentially attractive which is a concept that is heavily pushed by the media. Also, it also panders to the male gaze as well as the writer’s fantasies as, although it’s changing now, most scripts are written by men and thus want to make their female characters pretty in young in order to fulfill the writer’s desires especially when said writer is single or not conventionally attractive and thus putting their male protagonist, no matter how old or “ugly” they are, with a younger and more desirable partner so that they can feel better about themselves and play out their cravings for pretty girls on screen.

Related to the hotness gap: when every male character in a movie is average looking with average bodies, but every female character is conventionally attractive with a thin, toned body with curves. So, no skinny girls that don't work out or are flat chested or flat assed, and definitely no girls who are even chubby. Yet every single man has a slight belly and none of them even has a conventionally handsome face. I was browsing recently and saw an ensemble sex comedy that sounded funny but the trailer revealed the cast was like this and I just lost interest. It was just too obvious. If they had just varied it a little I wouldn't question it. Just one woman who wasn't swimsuit model hot and one guy who could pass for a leading man would have been enough. But it looked like they put out a casting call for "Beer drinking goofy male best friend" and "beautiful pilates instructor" and then just filled the cast with all the people who showed up instead of looking for different character types. They could have made everyone average or everyone attractive, or more realistically had a few of each in each group.

@@ericaheap whoa that first sentence is a lot of word soup. Why would there necessarily be an echo chamber because misogyny supposedly "runs rampant and toxic" in Hollywood? Are you trying to imply that producers and writers TELL each other to be misogynistic, and therefore misogyny abounds? Because that's what an echo chamber means; that people are only hearing and therefore *echoing* similar ideas and perspectives. You echo words not actions. And as to whether I agree or disagree with the video, there's not a simple answer to that. He makes many different points. His number 5 trope: the hotness/age gap, is just plain stupid and ironically sexist itself. The next trope, the female in Jeopardy construct, has more weight to it. But that requires a more nuanced discussion, which he doesn't provide. Yes, the rape scene in the horror movie is disturbing, but there's a whole lot of things that's wrong with the horror genre in general . It's not fair to act as though that particular category of films is representative of all of Hollywood. But to answer your question more definitively, no I don't agree with his overall narrative that Hollywood is annoyingly sexist against women. But to be "annoyed" is inherently subjective isn't it? Am I allowed the right to not be annoyed, the same way you have the right to be annoyed? Recently I found a 2015 article in which it was indicated that Maggie Gyllenhaal (age 37 at that time) was told that she couldn't get the role as the lover of the male lead (age 55 at that time) because she was viewed as "too old". Since then have read several articles--female actor's (for movies) sell-by date is often 40 years old and, depending on the female actor, even younger. These articles also indicated that 25 and 30 year old female actors are playing roles that were envisioned by the script as 40 or 45. One recent film had Angelina Jolie playing Colin Farrel's mother, yet they are both approximately the same age. This stuff is super important--movies reflect the culture but also GREATLY impact the culture. Lastly, the hypocrisy of this--brilliant but socially-inept geeks or other males who are overweight and/or not considered "traditionally" good looking complaining/bemoaning that the "gorgeous" (super good looking according to Hollywood standards) girls/women won't date them. These males in these movies/tv shows show no interest in women who are brilliant, creative, funny, kind but who are also overweight or "just" average-looking. This is BS hypocrisy.

There is a reason Men of All Ages Want Women in Their Mid-20s, while women generally want men that are the same age or little bit older. Men want a sexual partner to produce offspring with the more attractive a woman is the more likely she is to be wanted by a man but this decreases as they get older with less men being interested in them. Whereas women want resources from a man which is why the majority of women will only stay with a man that makes equal or more resources then her (generally economic resources). Even in highschool, our drama teacher did admit that I was a significantly better actor and especially singer then the other girls but she told me I can't play the lead (aka love interest) because I don't look the part.

The hotness gap annoys me, too. Connected to this is the annoyance I feel when people make a big deal about a man losing a lot of weight to play a certain role: "Wow can you believe it??? So brave!!" Never mind that every single woman in Hollywood has to maintain a weight of 90 lbs for their whole life or they have no career. That's one reason why I enjoyed the British show Miranda, simply for the reason that it pairs a big, awkward woman with the hot man of her dreams, and they have real chemistry.

There’s like tons of famous women way over 90 lbs but I get your point. I think making a big deal just because they dropped a few pounds for a role is idiotic, but sometimes you have to admit it’s cool seeing how dedicated they are for a role (for instance, Chris Pratt or Tom Holland doing hard training for the Marvel movies)

i completely understand your point, but body issues among men are equally valid. there are many cases in hollywood where men are pushed to their absolute physical limits while filming roles because if how jacked they have to be. take hugh jackman in wolverine for example. he went through a 36 hour dehydration period to lose his "water weight" so that he would look more ripped in shirtless scenes (bearing in mind you can only survive 3 days without water). other examples include channing tatum and chris evans who were also forced to go to extreme lengths to maintain "the look". once again, i completely understand, respect and agree with your point about women in hollywood having extremely unrealistic goals, but we also can't overlook the fact that many men also have to go to extreme lengths for roles, which go on to be viewed as the ideal body type for men.

IKR. Sometimes, when I expressed my personal opinion of being comfortable doing traditional girly things I got labelled as oppressed, trying to please men, spreading toxic feminity, etc. Society tried to evolve by accepting that some girls just doesn't like being forced to do girly stuff and to me that's perfectly fine, let women do whatever they want. But apparently when some women genuinely wants to embrace femininity suddenly they're the antagonist in the "woke" society. And here I thought we're letting girls do whatever they want. Ngl this whole concept of anti-girly just turned itself into the very thing they aimed to destroy

cola fire I think because those two girls are still young, and naive, and haven't seen the world enough. Besides, young girls tend to adore mature men. We need to open their minds, not punch them in the face 😀

September Studies idk, of course that is a prevalent trope throughout all tv and film, however there is the (less common) reverse also. For example in W- Two worlds, the girl randomly grabs the guy and forcefully kisses him, despite him having no idea who she even is at that point. The resulting confusion and chaos of course ensues, similar to how the more common reverse of the roles often plays out. I think it’s a trope that exists on its own, regardless of gender, but appears more commonly with male characters force-kissing the female due to the separate issue of the showcasing of stereotypical roles of a men and women in a relationship, I.e the man being in control or more dominant and the woman being more passive. Both tropes I’ve mentioned, despite my thinking they are separate issues that have become entwined here, can be extremely problematic. Especially when it reinforces the idea you can randomly grab someone and kiss them with no implication of consent whatsoever. Maybe I’m overthinking this, but that’s my thoughts on the matter😂

AJ Baumeister not saying that sexism doesn’t exist for men, but i defiantly wouldn’t say the majority. Have you not seen some of the eastern countries and how women are treated? If your point is about the discrimination and feminists (internet’s definition) on hating men, then I still wouldn’t say the majority. Men have feminists and femcels. Women have incels and MGTOW’s. Discrimination is very equal on both sides. I don’t want to make a solid statement on this, so take this with a grain of salt, but I might even say that women would be discriminated more, or at least be more harshly hated by these people. When seeing the incels and MGTOW’s, then comparing them to the femcels and feminists, they seem much more harsher and aggressive towards women. They praise Ted Bundy, take pleasure in seeing women being raped and killed, openly sharing explicit fantasy’s of a future where women are tortured. I don’t see that nearly as much on the femcels and feminists. I’m not entirely sure, since that’s just from my own research. Sexism at least happens to both genders equally in discrimination. But if we are talking legally, then it would defiantly be women who get it towards them more in certain countries.
