A suggestion for those who self trim is to make sure you have a nice, big mirror facing you and another 90° to the side. When I first grew a beard in the 90s I only had mirrors facing me, and I think that's what led to my early bearding years where I put my neckline at the jaw. I couldn't see how silly it looked unless I saw pictures of myself. So remember to look at your beard from all angles when trimming!

Wow Dan, clearly the video I needed. I could tell you a thousand experiences, let's start with the barbershops, I've only been to one, I had never been to any and an acquaintance recommended it to me (medium beard, trimmed neckline)... and I didn't take a photo of the barber, he He brings several photos, videos and almost almost, I even make a documentary, even so, he always ends up cutting my neckline more than I want, he always lowers my cheekbones so that they connect with the corner of the mouth, when I want them higher ... in short, before I used to trim my beard, I did a trim every 6 months, but I'm talking about years ago... the truth is that those cuts stressed me a bit, I always ended up seeing the two sides somewhat differently, cutting more on one side than the other, especially the first few times, over time I had it more or less under control, I started going to the hairdresser for comfort, and I practically started again with a 3-day beard now that I want to leave it long again, I must be about 5 inches right now. As I told you in another video, now I'm going to let all the hair on my neck grow for at least a month, I can't give my cheekbones that much time because I work as a salesperson for my company, but one or two weeks for sure I can, and I doubt whether to try the barber one more time, or to do the maintenance myself, the truth is, in the end I'm not bad at it and that's when I like the way I wear my beard the most... but it is true that in a phase that I don't You can match all the hairs looking straight ahead, it's good for you to see angles that it's very difficult for you to see yourself. Right now I'm like Kratos, and I'm looking to be Gimli!

Incredible tips, thinking about the endgame and not focusing on the moment is HUGE advice. We tend to overthink and rush into decisions and that's where things go wrong. Another tip I'd like to throw out there, my barber will not touch my beard without me straightening it prior due to having a wavy beard. His reason is to make sure it's even all-around whenever he does any kind of tidy-up or trim. The moment he told me that, it reminded me that he is a true professional. 100% communication and pictures are key, also educating yourself on barber/style terminology helps too! It's fun to learn.

before finding this channel, i think i did EVERYTHING on this list wrong with the exception of the barber (i have yet to find one in my area). i am about a year now into NOT making mistakes and pretty much leaving everything alone (with the exceptions of a little high cheek cleanup, fade after haircut and stache). i should have probably been doing a little with transparency trims here and there but sorta adopted the thought of "just leave it alone for now". this thought process is mainly because my beard (on what i think is a bad day) never seems to be as bad later on when looking at pictures, videos, etc. i do know that i will eventually need to do some actual trims once again and when that time comes i will (A) follow all the tips here for sure and (B) likely submit some pics to a livestream for more specific advice prior to that trim. thanks Dan for all you do bro!

Its amazing what you learn about yourself sometimes. I had been growing my beard for a little over 18 months before finally going to a barber. I’m lucky to have a really high quality barbershop in my town so I took the plunge and had it trimmed. The cut was so minimal that nearly no one noticed I had anything done. Problem was I KNEW! Next thing I know I started obsessing whether it was PERFECT. To the point that a few days later I ended up cutting it down to a small goatee. I will say its kinda nice to have something a little different and I really enjoy the journey of growing it out so I wasn’t all that bummed out about it. But I did learn how OCD I became over my beard. It’s the one thing that Ive developed since “bearding” became a thing 5 or so years ago. Prior to that I would grow and not give it a second thought. So Im growing it back out but I think this time Im going to direct my OCD to something more productive. Like judging my wife’s ability to park in the driveway straight or something lol. I’ve finally come to realize no one gives a crap about your facial hair more then the one growing it. So on this journey (this will be my 5th), I think Im just going to enjoy the process and the feeling of having it rather then critiquing it every time I pass a mirror.

As for my experiences I only have 1 , I've never had a beard until now , I'll be @ my 6 month mark @ the end of this month. @ month 4 I went to get a hair cut , I requested a low bald fade and asked that he not bring the fade to low into my sideburns and to leave them . Well he did , he dam near brought it down to the top of my earlobe on one side so then he had to do the same to the other side @ that point as to make symmetrical , needless to say I haven't went back to him and I don't ever plan to, & this was a very expensive barbershop in NOLA that I had faith in to abide by my simple instructions. It's obvious to me now that I should never get a haircut by a man who doesn't have a beard of his own. Sideburns are now filling in nicely, lesson learned.

This video is golden! Beard trimming or a trip to the barber can be nerve wracking. A mistake can literally set you back months to recover from a mistake. I trim my beard myself, so if I mess it up I can only be mad at myself rather than a barber, friend or family member who is trying to help me with a trim. Great advice as always Dan!

@@NauticalWizard yes I am a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and own a school. Some people prefer short beards when training in BJJ, but as you can see from my videos my beard is fairly long. My beard get pulled and beard hairs come out from time to time when rolling aka sparring and I am okay with that and have no intention of ever cutting my beard. I am never going to win a beard contest or become a Beardbrand model, so I don't really worry about the accidental pulling. Plus I usually end up washing my beard twice a day which is once in the morning and then after training and I train daily. My system is not optimal for the best looking beard, but I am happy with the way my beard looks and am sticking with being a bearded BJJ practitioner.

Thanks for the tips! I myself have been guilty of getting a haircut I didn’t like but I didn’t speak up & let the barber continue because “he’s the professional” & I hated the haircut & complained once I got home. It was from that point on that I would go into detail on exactly what I wanted. & now with your picture suggestion I think I’ll even try that the next time, especially when it comes to my beard. For trimming yourself, "the patience is key" point is the most important one for me. I have screwed up my trim every time I rushed including have to go back down to a very short beard to recover. The other mistake I made was chasing the balanced look. Oh it looks a little longer on that side let me take off a bit. Now that side looks short. Quick way to end up a lot shorter than you wanted to. When I first had my beard I went to a barber and told them to "just take off a little" and they did what they thought. This left me upset and set me on the path of trimming my own. Looking back now I was not specific and did not tell them what I wanted.

So, 3 and 4 are the only ones I never experienced. 4 because I've never been to a barber. And 3 was sheer luck! What I mean is that I decided, before even finding you or any other beard videos, I just sorta thought about it on my own and thought "Well no, I mean, why would I trim it in any way before it's actually styled how I wear it??" And it was just luck that that's "right," and how you're "supposed to" do it. So I never experienced that one either. Re the other tips, I sort of combine your #2 tip with your #1 tip in my head. I see them, for me, as part of the same tip in that I made the mistake (tip #1) of not training before trimming, and *therefore* didn't (tip #2) trim relative to my goal! So I combine those tips. Specifically, I would trim instead of train every time there was a hair out of place. Every time I felt my beard getting "poofier". I even, gulp, did the Scuba Trim! Which like you said, is fine if that is your goal. Sculpted and shorter. But that wasn't my goal. I just wasn't clear in my own mind about what else to do for the puffy beard at that time. So I trimmed before training, and therefore didn't trim relative to my goal. And finally, that last one. Yeah. There were plenty of times I would trim and not take the proper time. And I'd get all sweaty. And it was just a disaster. Hair wouldn't trim smoothly because of sweat, or I wouldn't notice where the lines should really be. Your "trim over 3 days tip" was a revelation! Like, "oh wait, I don't have to make my beard perfect in the 5 minutes before I shower???" I've since stopped making all these mistakes. 😊 Great video sir 😊👍

Really great video Dan! I have learned SO much from all of your trim and maintenance videos. I do all of my own trimming and I have learned a lot on the journey from personal experiences, as well as from your information. The last time I actually used electric clippers was when I had a fireball go up in my face, from gasoline vapors igniting (your campfire trim was very helpful!). Lately all I use is hand scissors as I find it is slower, and you can really target specific areas. I have learned that if I can't style an area correctly, and it doesn't look good, then it needs a small trim.

Ohhh, I got a good horror story. Early in my beard journey, I was rocking a short beard. About a 2 or 3 guard with clippers. These clippers were cheap and the "head" could be pushed down with no much force. So, I go in for a trim. Push a bit too hard to make sure everything is even, and the head collapses and trims my beard WAY too short. I had to buzz the rest down to a 5 o'clock shadow. Man was I pissed lol.

"Not trimming relative to your goals" is gold. Obvious yet too many of us, especially when we're newbies, make that mistake... guilty... also, not sure if the color of your mustache has changed or if you're styling it slightly differently than you use to, but I love how it stands out from your the rest of your beard! I know in the past you said a handlebar isn't for you, but I like that you're not blending into the body of your beard anymore. Have you considered pushing the wings out even slightly more? I think it might look even more distinguished!

Thank you Dan, as usual. Just had my first trim as a "gift" for my first yeard (Woohoo!). Man, I needed that. Since my goal is to have a fully-rectangular long beard (like yours, but with a straight line at the bottom), I explained to the barber step by step my idea. He had this predator look in his eyes regarding my mustache, but I gently said "no thanks, I'll trim that at home". To be honest, I lied... ¡I want to have a massive, lumberjacky mustache so birds and other woodland critters can have a new home! Yeah, the #4 is very important. Hey Dan, great video and excellent tips. So first and foremost, I FINALLY pulled the trigger on doing my first trim myself about a month ago. I was initially told to use scissors by my friend who did the first trim. I was terrified of that because of the chance of unevenness (my ocd would be off the chart here). So instead, I combined your method and hers. I used my clippers for the initial trim, then after showering and styling, I used scissors to clean up any extra long hairs that I missed. I used the scissors for the next day or so, for a 2 or 3 day trim, like you suggested, without taking too much off and it worked like a charm! My wife said it looked fuller and much better. I can’t thank you enough for all the help I’ve gotten from you and your channel. I used to just let my beard grow to a point then shave it way down and start over. This has been a great journey and a learning experience to maintain a longer beard. I’m currently at the longest my beard has ever been and will hit my “tweard” in June. My beard grows slowly, even with Biotin, so I still have a way to go before I hit my goal beard (which is still Aric’s from BO). Not sure if I can do the mustache part though. Not a fan of eating it constantly. 😂 Sorry for the long post, just wanted to throw a comment out there and maybe help someone in the process if they need an idea for a trim. Keep up the good work! 🙏🏻

I have made all of those mistakes in my beard journey 😂 I went to a barber before I got married almost 2 years ago. Haven't been to a barber since. I should have communicated better to be honest. Since then I trim my beard myself, and over time have gotten better at it. Thanks to Dan C I have figured out what works best for my beard but it wasn't over night, I've had to try new things and experiment to find out what works best for my beard and my goals. Patience practice and trying new things are important. Thank you for your all of your videos Dan, without your help I would have given up years ago. You are an inspiration. I want a 12 inch beard someday. I'm only at 7 now but now that I have dialed in what works best for my beard, I'm confident that I can reach my goal. I know patience, practice and positivity I will get there someday. Thank you for teaching me so much I appreciate you Dan!

I've definitely had bad experiences with both the barber and at home trims. My barber experiences were my fault as I didn't communicate what I wanted (I also wasn't sure though at the time). I was scared to trim myself, but as others have said, if I mess up I only have myself to blame. I've definitely made mistakes and taken too much off on self trims, but have learned with experience to just take a little and you can come back to it (3 day trims 👍👍) I'm still figuring out my solid beard goals for how I want it to look, so I trim differently every time almost 🙃 Great video Dan! Excellent tips that will be a great reference to share, thanks! 👊🍻👍

Thanks for this! I'm growing my beard out for the first time ever and seeing way better results than I ever thought I would get. Already long enough to touch my adams apple. As far as the neck line I'm only trimming the very transparent ends of the back so they line up with the front of my beard because it looks weird when the back neck bits are longer than the front. My goal is to just get my beard as big as I can physically get it, I don't know what my potential will be but I'm very happy with what I've got so far. I'm never gonna let a barber touch my beard, I'm leaving it in my hands.

I went to a local barber and asked for a “clean up”. Big mistake. The beard looked awesome for a month or so but because he trimmed from the top to sculpt the beard and mustache it looked terrible once it started to grow out. For months I have had “fuzzy cheeks” that are now finally long enough to style into a decent shape.

I have allowed a barber to trim my beard once, and he seen something I couldn’t see. Even looking at my side profile pics, I didn’t notice how the left side of my beard wraps around my ear more and extends more towards the back. It was thick, and actually part of my natural beard, but it wasn’t uniform….symmetrical….balanced…? (Not sure what to call it, but now where I don’t trim my horizontal neckline that allows those “supporting actors” to help with transparency, I apparently have a vertical neckline, that I have to trim when cleaning up the side, and the back of my neck. As much as I would rather trim it myself so if something does go wrong, I only have myself to blame, and I could look at it as another learning experience, having a second set of eyes on it, with a different perspective allowed me to see something I just didn’t see on my own, and for that I was grateful, and appreciated his input, and had a good experience. Another thing that made me comfortable was he didn’t just jump right in to going at my beard immediately, (I might have thrown up on him if he did! Lol!) He looked, assessed, and told me his plan, and executed. He said I am going to get this spot behind your ear so it doesn’t wrap around your head, and tighten your cheek lines, after he did that he got a little bit of the stray hairs at the bottom that would be considered transparency, he calls them ghosts. Lol! Then he looked…..looked some more, and since I already style and maintain on a daily basis, and I consider a very healthy beard since watching this channel, he said “I really just don’t know what else to do with it except stare at it and admire it.” Lol! Now I just have to convince him to use a beard wash instead of Irish spring with aloe. Ha ha ha!

Great content Dan. If you trim at home the advice of taking your time and trimming over 2-3 days is critical. I learned my lesson the hard way. You are always more critical of yourself and try to make it perfect and once you realize your trimmed is 1-2 inches shorter than what was desired. You can't put it back. Other advice is to get to know your tools and how they work. Trimmer, comb, brushes, etc.

Dan, Your beard always looks great. The never trimming the neck line, if neck line is covered, is key to a big full beard. I stopped trimming my entire beard period, including mustache, 8 years ago and it was best decision I ever made …for me. Not trimming isn’t for everyone but it’s great for some of us, so what I’m sharing with fellow viewers is don’t be afraid to not trim, if you don’t like it after a year or two then trim.

Outstanding all the way! #4 has a lot in it. Clear communication is vital throughout life, and you can’t always be certain others listen. Even iff you have a photo, take your hands out from under the apron and point to (or better, touch) where you want what done. And right on warning about “slinging the lingo” - what you learned from the Internet may very well not be what your barber learned in school. Guards, for example. Professional guards are measured is eighths of an inch (usually. Manufacturers may have specific sizes) but tools intended for home use or Internet purchase are usually measured in millimeters. Not the same.

Great info! New subscriber here. I've had a beard for years and I have never let a barber or stylist touch it until a month ago. I made the very mistake of asking for a beard trim and didn't tell her what I wanted. I assumed she would keep it in it's current shape and simply just "clean it up". She changed the shape and I was not happy with the results. Not her fault and I knew it when I left. It was totally my fault and a mistake I won't make again. Even though it was not her fault, I believe I will find a male bearded barber for any future beard trims and communicate very clearly what I want with photos to support. Hey Dan long time no talk hope everything is going well with you and your family sir, so bad beard trims huh every time I've trimmed my beard rather its been myself or once or twice that a barber has done I always dislike it. Felt bad for doing the trim in the 1st place. Due to a new entanglement policy at work I need to keep it semi short my biggest problem areas are the side burn portions (they will never lay down and always stick up) and the bottom corners like below my ears just don't like the shape. Before I found your channel a couple years ago I used to do the scuba trim which is fine if you rock a shorter beard I guess but not if you want it to grow out more like yours, I'm getting close to the point to where I'm just going to let it grow and do its own thing for about 5 or 6 months to see if I can get past this stage I'm at. Good video sir can't wait to see the next one.

Yeah, I may not have been properly conveying to a barber what exactly I wanted, but a barber doesn't think they're doing their job unless there is a pile of hair from their efforts. I started the nerve-wracking process of trimming my own beard. The best advice I received from Dan was style first, then the three-day trim. I walk into a trim with a good idea of how much needs to be trimmed, then divide that by three for the amount each day. In most cases I stop at day two because it already looks good. Thanks Dan.

I went to a barber 2 days ago for the very first time. I told him I wanted to have it framed and edged and just generally cleaned up. When he turned me around and I saw myself in the mirror I just about fell out of the chair! I lost about half my length! And instead of how I had it squared across the bottom he rounded it. I was livid. But I held onto my temper and even tipped him. As the day went on my anger turned into disappointment as I tried to figure out where I went wrong. I'm still not exactly certain. All I can figure is that I never told him to not take off half, and never told him I didn't want it rounded. I just assumed he'd follow what I'd already started. So in the future, to avoid any communication errors, I will just attempt to do it myself.

Dan, I am new here. I stopped shaving around the beginning of the year and your channel is such a tremendous resource. Thank you! I've probably watched about 50 or so of your videos in the last week or two. I really like the look of your beard in the videos from 4 years ago. I know you have made changes to your regiment since then, but I would very much like to know what you were doing when the beard was about 4 inches in length as that seems like the sweet spot for me to aim for. Your beard seems like it was a little more stiff and straight. Were you always just trimming the bottom or did you trim the sides for a time and then stop doing that? Were you using more balm when the beard was medium length? I love the natural look of your beard, but I think my wife would appreciate something a bit shorter and more groomed. I'm hoping to make the live stream tonight to see what some of the other folks are doing. Love the positivity and the teaching. Thanks again! Additionally, I would like to throw out that I am an Amazon seller and if there are beard products people really want to purchase there via Amazon Prime, I would love to hear about those products and make contacts with those manufacturers. When I was first growing my beard out I basically never trimmed it for about 12 months and it definitely looked crazy, but it did grow fast. Now it's been about another year since I started trimming and my beard is exactly at the same length it was if not even a little bit shorter since that first trim and since then I have trimmed it monthly. Is part of growing for length allowing there to be some transparency and fly aways? I would still like some more length on the beard. I also wonder if this is longest length I can manage that looks maintained. My beard is right at the bottom of my collarbone.

At the time of my last trim, which I did myself, my beard was roughly 11" long and basically squared off on the bottom as well as thin and wispy looking hence the desire to trim. Instead of the squared off look, I wanted to give the bottom of my beard some curvature so, I used a Chicago No. 8 comb as a guide/template. The No. 8 is approximately 2.5" top to bottom at its center point and has a "slight" curve to it from one end to the other. Placing the "bottom" of the upside down comb even with the bottom of my beard, I simply used my electric clippers to follow the curve of the teeth of the comb. After following the length/width of the comb's teeth, I just free handed the rest and it turned out pretty good IMO (at least I was pleased with the result which was a roughly 8.5" long , fuller looking beard that had a curvature on the bottom) Bonus tip: my beard is white (witness my thumbnail pic) so I wore a black Tshirt which allowed me to see exactly what I was doing. Conversely, if you have a darker colored beard (ala DanC) wear a lighter colored (white) Tshirt to give you the contrast so you can tell exactly what's what as you trim.

I have the barber trim my beard when I get my hair cut because you've siad it before "no one is more critical of your beard then you" and I know how my ocd can be so I take myslef out of the equation. I'm guilty of saying just Clean it up but my barber will ask follow up questions like "what do mean ? " then I will actually have to articulate what I mean 1/2 inch off the bottom, bring the sides in by 1/2 inch etc. I've been going to the same barber sense I started my beard journey so I feel she has almost as much invested in my beard as me and she won't do anything without asking my permission first.

I had been growing for length and realized I had reached a terminal length. My beard was growing uneven and needed trimmed. So I decided to do something different and try for a different shape. I have poor vision in my right eye. So I trimmed here and there. Then was going to trim the bottom on the sides parallel with my upper cheeks. I used a comb to mark where I wanted to trim, tried it on both sides and decided I could do it even with my poor vision. The left side went fine. The right side was going good, then I realized I tilted the comb and I chunked my beard on my right under my jaw line. Disappointing, but it'll grow back. It doesn't seem that bad so I'm just letting it grow back and I'll have it evened up at my next haircut. And from now on I won't be shaping my own beard anymore, just transparency trims! 😂

Dan will the hairs on the side of my beard fall into place? They sort of stick out to the side at this stage for me but a majority of them lay down. I just started using heat and that’s helped a bit, my beard is medium length. I shouldn’t trim these if I’m going for a long stage beard right? My sideburns down?

If you dial in your heat routine, they will! However, there will be times where they give you challenges. Just part of a beard! It will teach patience

I went to a barber with no product in beard. I even told him I had nothing in my beard, I asked him to trim it and take about 2 inches. When he was done, I was so angry, I never went back. I don’t go to a barber anymore. I trim myself.
