I have literally been riding for 40 years, and I was a motocross competitor in my younger years. Every time I get on the bike after a couple months of not riding (I get winter here) the first thing I do is head across the street to the church parking lot and practice a bit before hitting the road. Anyone who thinks they have nothing more to learn, has learned nothing at all.

Also very important to do something like that to make sure the post-winter maintenance has everything in good working order. Find out what's wrong while slow rather than at 80 on a highway.

It's great you mentioned taking 6 months to practice what you learn from the basic course because I told my instructor I'd be back for the intermediate course in 6 months. I plan to make my way up to advanced and absorb as much knowledge as I can.

Tip number 3 is absolutely spot on. When I got seriously interested in motorcycles, I rented a 250cc for a week. When I felt comfortable with it, both in and out of traffic, I purchased a 500cc, which I used for two years. And only after riding the 500cc for two years did I purchase the bike I really wanted, and still ride to this day: a Sportster 1200cc.

I just took my basic course yesterday. I've been riding a scooter the last year so I felt like this video was made for me. I had been practicing MotoJitsu drills & I felt they were def improving my skills every time I did them. I will always do them to warm up for every ride. Riding is risky so its best to be prepared. I passed with flying colors because I had been doing the drills. What's going 100 on the straightaways going to teach you if a basketball rolls down the driveway right in front of you & there's opened manholes on either side of you? Wheelie over the ball...? Only if you've been practicing. Stay safe.

Man I really need to make a shout out to you right now. I watched a couple of videos of your channel over the last month without any comments, just checking it out. Two things. First, your content: I ride motorcycles since 15 years, always trying to get better. The advices, Tipps and the knowledge you're sharing was either exactly what I would have recommend/have experienced or something I didn't know to that point that really helped me instantly. So far each of your videos is really worth it. Thanks a lot 👍 Second: Your attitude. In every of your videos you present real talk, self confident and you're not shy to show weaknesses. You're not trying to look cool or better than you are. You stick to facts, physics and present both, your weaknesses and skills self confident as your obviously are. You show your struggles, but also your skills - which are great and earned by training (l like e. G. the approach in your wheelie videos). In a community like motorcycling where so many people indedendend from their age try to prove whatever to whoever, try to be cool, try to compensate something, driving risky, talking shit and behaving overall irresponsible and considering it as "cool", your attitude is so refreshing. I'd say you're not just a proper Rider, you're a role model aswell. I'd really wish there would be more riders like you out there. As this is not the case people like me mostly drive alone and avoiding the beautiful roads during the biker-rush hour in order to stay out of trouble. Keep going with your videos, content and attitude is gold. I'm pretty sure you safed already a couple of riders and you really help to spread a real, no bullshit-attitude, that sticks to facts, skills and confidence and not to false ego and childish and irresponsible behavior. Hey, I' ve been watching your video's for a while now and you are such an inspiration to me. I am almost 50 years old and have my licence sinds 1991, but never had a bike. I crashed one right after i got my licance, so I got scared. My son took his CBT three days ago, (uk) on his 16th Birthday. We've been out every morning since.... and we will continue in the exact same manor, or fashion, that you have advocated, in your most excellent channel since we subscribed in November. I have loved every minute of the rides, and so has he. We spent the winter months (OK - 20 minutes a day) watching your channel, in preparation. One thing that helped me maintain skills was to constantly focus on trying to avoid ever touching the ground with my feet during city/suburb riding. It forced me to think more than normal about what's going on around me, and focus on low-speed balance as I neared a red light. When I took the ERC class after a couple years of riding, i practically sleep-walked through it. Regarding bike choice for a first bike, I think people focus WAY too much on engine size. I've found that easier advice, that they're more likely to listen to, is to stick with a used 2-cylinder for your first one. The torque profile is much more consistent across the RPM range than 3 and 4 cylinder inline engines. It's also better if that used bike already has a little bit of pavement damage, so there's less to worry about when learning low-speed maneuvers, and the inevitable drop at a stop light with uneven pavement won't matter much.

I bought my first bike 2022 ninja 400 and it's a great bike to learn on plus it's got enough to be fun in the canyons. Also have a z1000. That I got from my good friend who is a great mentor. He always tells me to practice the small stuff and the speed will come. He sounds just like you ❤️💯.

Hi I’ve watched loads of your videos and couldn’t get my head round why you focus on those slow speed car park type drills so I googled how to a get a bike license in the US - Now I get it !!!! I’ve had my UK licence about a year to get it there was 2 different bikes and 4 different tests which covers lots of what you promote - keep up the great work - Keep the shiny side up !

You forgot to mention that on #1 is when you wear full gear other motorcyclist who are(n't) on their bike will approach you and ask you what / where you ride, and by the end of it you'll have spent 30 mins or more talking about motorcycles.

I rode in Julian and Palomar in 2000 when I was in the Navy and you are correct new riders don’t belong there when they are new. I was on a 600 and was terrified initially. I was riding for 3 years before I went there.

I passed my license back in 2018, and I've rode around 60.000km since then. I still feel like I know nothing. I always feel out of place with other motorcyclists because I ride 'safely' (defensive riding!) with my Crossrunner (100hp). As you say though, I'll need to check for intermediate courses. During the winter it's 300km/week of highway/city to commute, that's all. I get rusty. Courses are like 200€ here, but I'll try to find 1 or 2 a year from now on.

Had a 600, 750, and 1000. Wreaked the 1000. Took many years off. Now I have a 750 again. I am very happy with the 750. No need for the 1000. I Can't really max out my 750 anyway. It is more skilled than me.

I come off on the 2nd day I had my KTM DUKE 390. Lucky I had the right gear on. I didn't know how important the proper gear is. It would have been worse if I didn't. I don't know if they have safety courses in Australia. But would like to take a few.

When I started I got a MT-03. A year later I was out riding people on 600's and 1000's on twisty roads. Yeah they'd pull away when it straightened out and no way I'd beat them in a line. But they were taking corners at like 20-30mph. While I was taking them at around 40-50. The only people that I couldn't catch were people treating the road like a track. They'd come up to me at a gas station and they would always ask stuff like "That's the 07 or 09 right?" To which i'd reply "No this is the 03, I just practice. I was maybe going 5 or 6 tenths. I forsure wasn't really pushing the limits of what the bike had to offer."

A mistake I made myself is not turning my head and looking in the direction I want to travel, and to also not fixate on things I do not want to hit. I think everyone seeking to get on two wheels should take a course, I see scooter riders here who are driving as if they are cars and riding in blindspots. Slow speed is critical, and yet it was evident most people never masted the principals when I took the riding course.

Don’t be afraid to look “dumb” riding with full gear. Nobody will make fun of you and if they do, it makes zero sense. If you go down with full gear, you’re gonna get hurt and be in pain and the bike will be messed up. If you go down without gear, you’re going to have permanent injuries and scars. I wrecked my electric dirt bike without my knee pads. I can literally flick my kneecap and get excruciating pain and it doesn’t bend until I massage it and slowly stretch it. Gear with plastic/composite sliders is ideal. Gear slides. Skin doesn’t. You WANT to slide with less friction. Friction = torn skin and ligaments and muscles. Spend the extra money and 5 minutes to put on gear. It could save weeks or months of healing and potentially permanent injuries.

Gear is always better but its not black and white. I know guys who crashed with no gear and they're fine,then there are those who crashed with gear and didn't make it. Skill and judgment is the most important.

The way I inform people about how important it is to wear a helmet is to point at a brick wall and tell them to sprint into it head first. At running speed that might send you to the hospital, now add 20 to 50 mph and imagine how that would feel.

Hi, he has a video that’s called something like never fear dropping your bike again. That video was a big help for me. Check it out maybe it helps you too. Issue for me was at slow speed taking turns and issue with stall and drop avoidance. Finding the perfect balance to have enough power to take the turn but not too much and maintaining control etc. Hope that helps

#3 Too Big is not an issue if you practice a whole lot in a parking lot before you ride in the streets much. Too Fast is a more important mistake.

What sort of tests do you do in America?😂Sounds like you ride up and down a parking lot and can then hop on an R1😂Here in the UK, what licence you get depends on your age, which depicts what power you’re limited to. And we do full tests out on the road, and in a car park, which you have to obviously pass.
