If the small fish are safer for pollutants such as mercury, should I select the filets from smaller (wild caught alaskan) salmon when I have the opportunity?

I worked in the salmon farming industry for 8 years or so when it first started on the East Coast of Canada. They don't use dye to color the meat. It is the krill and small crustaceans that give it the pink flesh. I think salmon should be on the toxic food list. They have been pumped full of drugs to combat disease and viruses that the actual act of farm fishing created. I don't think the wild caught salmon are much better. I can taste the difference.

This is why I love the videos from Dr Sten Ekberg! He doesn't stop at the grotesquely simplified one-liners you often hear like "Eat more fish because it's good for you!!" or "Limit fish because the mercury in it is poisoning you!" Instead, he digs deeper and gives us the knowledge required to keep ourselves healthier. 👍🙂

Thanks! Being of NordIc ethnic decent I seem to have had a strong lifelong affinity for fish as a regular staple protein source. Even as a picky eater child who didn't like most meats my mother could always depend on my eating most any fish. Being made fully aware of the true nature of the health limitations of eating today's fish as a dietary staple is very vital for myself and all of those who depend on it routinely in their weekly diets. Very glad to here that pickled herring and flounder are safer , they're 2 of my favorites. Also the Atlantic mackerel can be bought canned like sardines, very convenient.

@@allenparsens5279 I didn't do it and I'm sure you didn't do it. But a hundred and fifty years of pumping mercury and other heavy metal compounds into the ocean from industrial production and fabrication plus over 150 nuclear detonations and mishaps probably did. I'm not one of those environmentalists nuts or believe the world will end in 13 years because of climate change because that is a totally different story and completely false. But the pollution of our oceans is sadly very true.

@@shannonmonroe5873 I am not speaking about you as an individual, or me as an individual, or the guy next door. I am referring to the population in general. No one want to destroy or pollute the earth. People regularly protest it and those protests go ignored. Those behind the pollution are the industrialists, the moguls, royalty, the robber barons, the authorities. I am sick and tired of people saying “we” like war, like destruction etc. It isn’t we. It is just a few sick twisted people at the top. If you don’t define who they are, then the next thing you will be doing, is blaming the population for lets say, climate change.

Hello Dr. Ekberg . . . great info here. However, I'd like to point out the distinctly different characteristics of the Albacore Tuna. When people say 'tuna', they often think of the very large and sought after Bluefin and Yellowfin tuna you see on tv shows. The Albacore tuna is a very sustainable species that we fish for commercially and recreationally on the West Coast of the US (Primarily north) and typically only catch juveniles that are between 8-30 lbs. Low mercury and young age.

Thank you. There literally is an agenda to keep Bluefin and Yellowfin away from the masses. I've never heard of anyone dying from eating to much of it or even having it as part of a steady diet. Lots of propaganda out there to guide the customer to what THEY want to feed you rather than what is actually good to eat! There's a reason why Bluefin is so massively expensive. If you've ever had Bluefin nigiri/shashimi (Toro) you know.

Great video. Couple of important points to add. Watch out what oil is added to your canned fish. Many manufacturers pack sardines and other fish in soybean oil which is high in omega 6. Some use cottenseed oil, a highly industrially processed oil with trace pesticides. I have found Trader Joe's to have a great selection of sardines and anchovies packed in olive oil or water. I always go for the olive oil as I think it holds the fish flavor better plus the olive oil bonus. I often save the leftover packing oil for other recipes. I would not recommend their canned trout as it is farm raised and packed in canola oil. They also have wild sockeye salmon (canned and frozen) although I have not tried it my self.

I got mercury poisoning from tuna when I was in my early 20's. I was eating the cheap 'cat food' Bumble Bee tuna every day at lunch for months. I started to have neurological issues and my legs started to collapse at the knee. I stopped the tuna and I felt better within a week or so....

@@alionessprincess In all honesty I never got a blood test or saw a doctor. My boss at the time made fun of me for eating cheap tuna 'cat food' and joked about mercury poisoning. Thats the only reason I looked into it when I started getting symptoms....I didn't know about mercury in tuna at the time. I had all the symptoms.... and they all went away shortly after I stopped. I'm pretty sure I started to get some alleviation with the first few days of stopping and I felt normal within a week or so..... It was a while ago... but I'm pretty sure that I was only eating one can a day for lunch. But it was for months... maybe over a year. There was a few people on Reddit who has experienced the same thing.... One person had two cans a day for two months and got sick.... Canned sardines and salmon are way better for you... I still eat canned tuna once in a while.... however I only eat Wild Planet products now...

@@rjthomasindyusa wow..(and thank you for responding btw) I also liked seafood; sardines, salmon and canned tuna I have them in the pantry but not the same brand you had. And I don't eat them everyday. I try to buy the wild ones and not farmed raised when I buy them as not canned. In general I have been made aware of the foods that we humans have been consuming and I try to consume and choose the healthier and safer options. I have a suggestion for a video, could you talk about how to heal amenorrhea naturally? Like which are the possible causes and which foods/ supplements/ herbs could help regulate the female hormones and the menstrual cycle. I'm 22 years old with a BMI of 21 and I follow a low carb diet (less than 50g a day) but I haven't had my period in over 6 months. I tried sardines for the first time this year. I'm 60. I was surprised they just taste very much like tuna but saltier and a bit richer. I put some yellow mustard on them and sometimes Frank's Hot Sauce on them to take the edge off of them. They're actually not bad and very filling for just a small tin. I figure a few tins a week would give me some good Omega 3 oil and some bio-available minerals.
