The SeaMax should be on here, they are starting to be imported from Brazil. Very nice plane, has retractable gear, longer range than A5 and larger payload. Looking at the weight the Icon should not be an LSA. It’s too heavy.

The biplane offers STOL, higher maneuverability at slow speeds, lower stall speed, greater lift, more ridged construction and shorter overall wing span. It is less efficient at higher speeds.
@doncarlo53 жыл бұрын
biplanes are sturdier, more maneuverable and have STOL, but sacrifice top speed . For most owners, the biggest disadvantage of not being able to fold the wings for storage in your garage, would probably impose a different choice . I'm still waiting till someone comes out with an ingenious AND affordable way to bring a sea plane to the public ... I would even opt for a DIY kit, if only there was a reasonable one on the market: I mean, something that looks good, flies well, has acceptable range, has a reasonable tag price, and offer a higher payload than just a backpack ... I know, I know, I'm just a visionary ... but visions are what distinguish us from the rest of God's creation ...

Just letting you know mojo, the LSA aircraft almost always have alot more useful load than they can put on paper, the FAA actually limit's the maximum gross weight, so the LSA developers will just put on paper the max allowed gross weight even though the plane can usually handle much more.

What about the Lisa Akoya out of France? It has a top speed of 138mph (limited US LSA speed, does 180mph in Europe), it only burns 3-4 gallons of fuel per hour, has a 550lbs useful load, 777 mile range (1250 miles if you get the upgraded fuel tank), can land on snow as well, and has electronic folding wings. It’s costs around as much as an Icon A5 but outperforms it in everything but aesthetics appeal. It should’ve definitely made the list.

Thanks to my dad they landed in a roadside ravine. The other owner pilot got out and ran away from the plane. Left my dad in the cockpit. Thanks for doing this video. You said that you didn't know if the biplane design added to performance, so as an amateur, I'll explain it for you...that is if you don't know how a biplane works...as opposed to not knowing how well this particular biplane design works. The very first airplanes were, of course, designed by the Wright Brothers. All of their original designs were biplanes. I'm no expert on this, but I think the first plane the Wright Brothers had any sort of lift off was pedal powered. Before moving to the North Carolina coast to work on airplanes, they were bicycle engineers in Ohio. I say this about the pedal power, which didn't work for more than a few feet of take off, to explain lift vs weight. Planes, I believe, are called planes, because of the plane of their wings. The wings are shaped specifically to funnel air in a way that lifts the aircraft. So, understanding that wings give lift to the aircraft, then it stands to reason that the more wing surface an aircraft has (of course considering weight to lift ratio) the more lift it has. Now, modern jet aircraft don't need lots of wing area, because their engines are so powerful that their, relatively low surface area wings still produce lots of lift. In fact, at greater speeds, large area wings slow an aircraft down. But at slow speeds, wing area is all the rage, and thusly biplanes, with double the wing area, can produce lift at significantly reduced speeds compared to modern aircraft. This is beneficial for two reasons. Take off speed is substantially lower, and stall speed (the minimum speed an aircraft can maintain without falling out of the sky) is also lower. Though, the biplane configuration will lower top speed as compared to the more modern single wing airplane, because at higher speeds, wing area creates a lot of drag. To understand modern low speed, high lift (autonomous ..as opposed to gliders that need to be towed) aircraft, check out long flight solar powered planes. They have a very wide wingspan, which is more wing surface area, and this allows such craft to stay aloft for a very, very long time. Six months for starters.

Uhm...putting aircraft not even in production on a "top 5" list? The Icon when it was gobbling up investor dollars spouted huge useful load and $120K price with electronic folding wings and electric retractable gear...then physics kicked in and all of that went away and now it isn't delivering to their customers, and more than tripled the prices they told investors originally. Gravity is a constant in the world, no fancy CAD program can change that. Try again and use real airplanes flying right now...like a Beaver, with 1500 lbs of useful load...that is a seaplane! Or a Cessna 182 on floats with a 900 lb useful load. A neat looking plane isn't worth the aluminum and fiberglass used to build it if you can't put your friends or family in it and go flying because they are too heavy.

Why? The Icon A5 is heavy, slow, has a horrible accident record so far, and costs as much as a luxury home. Go fly one, smile, and think it's great. Then, go fly a Super Petrel (www.superpetrelusa.com). It's faster, and it's slower (lands slower), carries more, has dual glass avionics, 2-axis autopilot, electric trim, angle of attack indicators, more maneuverable on the water, and flies like a dream. And it costs 1/3 as much.
