Although I've owned a Mk4 R32 for quite a while. I took a break from cars I'd be tempted to mod and just drove "normal" cars for a good while. It was SO relaxing to let my guard down and not give a crap where I parked or what roads and driveways I would have to negotiate. But then,I recently got back into VW with a 2021 Mk7.5 GTI SE. It is quite a departure from my Mk4 in many ways. Keep in mind I'm sort of new newb to these latest gen GTIs, so perhaps my knowledge and experience is lacking. That being said, I think what I find most different, not sure I'd say it's a straight out disappointment, is that it seemed far easier to mod and cross mingle parts between all the years of Mk4s compared to say these Mk7/7.5s. These new VWs are much more tech/software orientated for one. You can't just plug and play certain seemingly easy mods. Looks like you need to get into some coding to make a number of mods work. Didn't have to do all that in my Mk4. And, I probably didn't do my homework before buying the 2021 Mk7.5. But, I didn't realize there are seemingly more technical limitations in the last outgoing gen of Mk7.5s compared to the earlier Mk7s. I mean changing aftermarket headlights and taillights is extremely limited is what I found. What also annoys me is they say on sticker the Performance Monitoring is an option, yet, it's disabled. See dealer. When, if ever, are they going to get that software upgrade so I can get the digital boost gauge and g force monitor, etc...? Yes, I hear it's not exactly accurate and those digital gauge displays are mostly a gimmick. But, still, I really can't comprehend why they say it's supposed to have it yet they disabled it .. or rather it was never installed. It's a gimmick I think would still be cool and nice to have as previous Mk7s had them. Idk, I feel the core years for the Mk7s we're the Mk7s between 2017-2019. I think they may have cleaned up some of the earlier Mk7 issues yet didn't omit or limit certain features like they did in the later 2020-2021 Mk7.5s. And, I think majority of mods and aftermarket options are catered to the pre-2020/2021 Mk7s and the later models just don't have the support and compatibility of the earlier model years of the Mk7s. Take for instance MANY of the OBEeleven features just don't seem to work or aren't even available for the later Mk7.5s... which, honestly, was an early and fast waste of about $120 or so I found out. And, since it's an outgoing gen, I doubt there will be any further support and development for the Mk7.5s. what is out and most available are seemingly for the Mk7s mostly. The Mk8's are out, or slowly coming out, so that's where the focus will be moving forward. You should know, when looking for a new car, I wanted to keep it simple and get a very good car I could be quite content with AS IS. So, I bought the 2021 Mk7.5 GTI. Because of the seemingly lack of support for the Mk7.5s, I think I basically got what I thought I wanted. I do feel my options, if I wanted to excercised them, are more limited than if I had bought an older 2017-2019 Mk7. I am being much more picky about spending money on the GTI these days. I'm not into performance mods too much. I don't have driving situation where I need more than what comes stock which is actually plenty fun for me. The one thing I think I can and would like to get some day are lowering the car and a nice set of 19s. I think around $7-8k, having a nice profile and stance would go the longest way for my further enjoyment of the car. I figure about $2-3k on good coilovers suspension and all the work to set it up right. And, around $5k on perfect custom made wheels + tires that will fit perfectly.

Not gonna lie… Mk7.5 GTI’s are useless money pits. Stuff goes wrong all the time and you are left high and dry. They are slow compared to Golf R’s and are pretty much the same price second hand. The re-sale value is rubbish too. No one wants them on their forecourt. I’m sorry but they are total garbage. Weak components under the hood, chocolate clutch as standard, constant stress for the owner. If you’re going to get a golf, get a Golf R DSG and get it remapped along with a gearbox remap. Or just don’t get a golf, that would be a better solution. I’m SO HAPPY I got rid of mine and got into a Porsche for 8 grand more than I paid for the GTI.

If you thought the GTI was a money pit, why would you get a German luxury SUV that’s twice as old?

@@HealthyMotherfcker what are you talking about? The type R’s are almost double the cost even used. However I’m sure most would rather have one of those but people don’t want to have that large payment that long.. Anything foreign is expensive to maintain..
