During my childhood, the Dalton Bonds were the only ones I could get into. I felt that even the Roger Moore ones from a few years earlier felt too old, somehow. So I kind of see Dalton as the first modern Bond. And License to Kill was the newest Bond film for what seemed like forever, because GE007 took a long time to get off the ground due to massive production issues. When it did, it was clearly worth the wait, but Brosnan didn't sit well with me as Bond. I didn't warm to him until nearly 2 years later when the game GE007 came out. Prior to that, Brosnan was still the smarmy English guy who made Robin Williams miserable in Mrs. Doubtfire.

I grew up on the paperbacks in high school and Dalton is by far the closest, physically and emotionally, to Bond in the books. janeyrevanescence12 Timothy Dalton didn’t get a chance to continue on for his third movie to be originally released in 1991 as the series was in legal ligation for 6 years from 1989 to 1994 preventing any films from being produced and by the time Goldeneye was in pre production in 1994, Dalton was offered the role to return but by then he was fed up with the delays and was committed to other projects. Executives wanted to offer Dalton a multi picture deal to but Dalton felt at 48 years old in 1994 he was too old to commit to more then one film and resigned. Pierce Brosnan took over the role and Goldeneye was a darker toned film as was written for Dalton specifically.

Moore: Too lighthearted but he was by far the most "English Bond", elegant and witty. Dalton: Very faithful to the character in the novels, which strangely hurt him. Brad Jones aside to me it always seemed that since he only played Bond once people figured he must have been bad at it and he became largely known and accepted as worst Bond largely unrelated to his actual performance. Well expressed, Chris. My #1 favorite Bond film is 'Goldfinger' but that is partly explained by the fact it was my first Bond film and one which I saw during its initial release. Experiences like that, espescially if they're as iconic as 'Goldfinger', tend to imprint themselves in your DNA. And for me that experience was pure movie magic. I had similarly memorable experiences with 'The Exorcist', '2001', 'The Godfather', 'Cuckoo's Nest', 'Jaws', 'Alien', 'Bladerunner', 'Silence Of The Lambs', various Hitchcock and Lynch films, and too many others to list here. But if I had to choose a single Bond film as the finest in terms of all levels of cinematic artistry, my choice would be 'Casino' which completely blew me away, leaving me shaken AND stirred. And, much as I will always adore Connery, I have to say Craig, in 'Casino', gave the single finest performance of any actor in that role. And Eva Greene gives the finest performance of any of the Bond women, with Diana Rigg a close second. Which brings me to the other Bond film in my personal top echelon -- 'Majesty's' -- not withstanding the sometimes unduly harsh critiques about Lazenby's performance. (NOTE: Your mention of Vesper -- being the only woman who ever really got to Bond emotionally is not really true in light of him having married and then tragically lost Tracy in 'OHMSS'.)

Massive bond fan, read the first 3 of Ian Fleming's novels and have saw all of the movies and my personal stance is that Timothy Dalton is a massively underrated bond and, in my opinion, he is the only bond that I have ever seen who didn't have a movie that I didn't like, but the rest of your list is as close to perfect as could be.

Actually, the first woman to touch Bond's heart was Teresa Draco in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (although, I'll admit, the Daniel Craig films seem to screw with the James Bond timeline).
@177890310 жыл бұрын
Casion Royale is the one of the first Ian Fleming novels, so technically in the books Vesper is the first women to touch Bond's heart, as you may not have noticed that James Bond in Casino Royale has only recently reached 00 status further reinforcing my point.
@69johndz10 жыл бұрын
I did notice he was not 00 yet in Casino Royale. However, the movies messed up the timeline for me. I always thought it was the death of Teresa Draco that made him cold and closed-off. I really need to read the books one of these days.

James Bond & Le Chifre. (Played By: Daniel Craig & Mads Mikkelsen) Casino Royale was a fantastic movie and the best I’ve scene in my 26 years. The parkour scene was eloquent and provided a nice dash of action, early, into the film. ‘A Poker Match’ was very stylish of an idea for the major themes of the drama to play out in. In one particular instance, Bond returns to the game well-dressed & composed after nearly having been poisoned to death w/ a sly one-liner; “That last hand, nearly killed me”. Also, no one can forget the exceedingly long car crash incident; nor the torture scene. Times are bound to change, as is only inevitable, but it’s going to take an immensely spectacular flick to surpass this one, and ‘Skyfall’, not to mention, didn’t even come close for me. As times change and Robots and AI take a leading role in society, it’ll be interesting to see how, and/or if, the Bond Saga will continue; and if it does, in what ways it’ll undoubtedly be transformed. In the meantime, I’m eagerly awaiting “No Time To Die”, Daniel Craig’s last shot to fully cement his legacy atop the throne of ‘James Bond’ actors. I can’t wait to see it! ❤️

Good list, and I agree about what you say about the movies, the actors and the constant shifting between seriousness and campiness in the series. I see you tend to enjoy the darker and more serious films, and I do as well. It would be hard for me to pick a favourite, but I would definitely include Goldfinger, GoldenEye, Casino Royale and Skyfall in my top five. I agree that Licence to Kill is underrated, but I wouldn't go as far as placing it in my top five. I actually think The Living Daylights is a notch better. I suppose my fifth pick would stand between The Spy Who Loved Me, and Spectre, which came out after this review. TSWLM is like the perfect "Adventure Bond", and it's perhaps the movie that unites the fun and romance with the mystery and seriousness in the best way, not to mention that Barbara Bach is so hot that I almost ... Well, you know. Spectre is the darkest of all the Bond films; it doesn't have ANY campiness, not much humour, and it just looks bleak. I can also understand why people find it a bit slow. For my part, I like slow, and I really like the mystery and very much enjoy the dark and melancholic soundtrack, as well as the awesome production, and realistic scenes. And it has Blofeld in the form of Christoph Waltz!

Poor Roger Moore! You have some great picks in your review, but I would include The Spy Who Loved Me simply because it was Moore's Bond coming of age. After Live and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Gun, it looked like Bond was finished. TSWLM brought back fun and excitement, exotic locales and great action, a great henchman in the Oddjob tradition with Jaws, and of course the first real Bond car since the Aston Martin DB5 in the Lotus Esprit. It was also my first theatrical Bond, having only seen earlier films in the series on TV. In many ways, it was a retread of Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice in many of its motifs, but I thought immensely enjoyable.I would also choose Tomorrow Never Dies over Goldeneye if for no other reason than Michelle Yeoh and the opening sequence where Bond escapes a cruise missile attack on a terrorist weapon exchange. I thought Brosnan was more sure of his characterisation of Bond and it hadn't reached the ridiculous levels of Die Another Day (which ties for my worst Bond alongside A View to A Kill).Also want to note I completely agree with your assessment of Timothy Dalton: he was a superb Bond who unfortunately because of legal wranglings never got to that crucial third movie (Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me defined Connery's and Moore's Bonds and were their third films).

I'm glad to see that you're a Bond fan, Chris! I wonder how accurate this list is to your opinion today. I know Casino Royale is still your favorite, but has some of this changed even a little bit? Anyway, here's my personal ranking of all 24 Bond films (including Spectre) from worst to best: The Film I Hate: 24. Die Another Day (PB, 2002) - 0.5/10 (One of the worst films I have ever seen in my life.) The Films I Dislike: 23. Thunderball (SC, 1965) - 3.5/10 22. Tomorrow Never Dies (PB, 1997) - 4.0/10 21. Quantum Of Solace (DC, 2008) - 4.0/10 The Films I Think Range From A Mixed Bag To Actually Pretty Decent: 20. You Only Live Twice (SC, 1967) - 5.5/10 19. The World Is Not Enough (PB, 1999) - 6.0/10 18. For Your Eyes Only (RM, 1981) - 6.5/10 The Films I Genuinely Like: 17. Diamonds Are Forever (SC, 1971) - 7.5/10 16. License To Kill (TD, 1989) - 7.0/10 (I'm sorry. I enjoyed License To Kill, but I had a couple of really big problems with it that keep me from loving it. I, too, think it's maybe a little bit underrated (it's usually just written off as blah or just okay by most Bond fans), but it's still flawed nonetheless in my opinion. I still think it's good though.) 15. Moonraker (RM, 1979) - 8.5/10 (*Shrugs* I really like it. :3) 14. A View To A Kill (RM, 1985) - 8.0/10 (I think it's really underrated.) 13. The Man With The Golden Gun (RM, 1974) - 8.5/10 (Also incredibly underrated.) The Films I Absolutely Love: 12. Dr. No (SC, 1962) - 9.5/10 11. GoldenEye (PB, 1995) - 9.0/10 (I'm not a big Pierce Brosnan fan (if you couldn't already tell), but this is the one film of his that I think truly stands out. Plus, this was my first Bond film, so I naturally do have a bit of a soft spot for it.) 10. Spectre (DC, 2015) - 8.5/10 (It does have some flaws, but I still think it's a very good Bond film and I loved it.) 9. From Russia With Love (SC, 1963) - 9.0/10 8. The Living Daylights (TD, 1987) - 8.5/10 7. Octopussy (RM, 1983) - 9.5/10 (I think it's the most underrated Bond film of all time. Half of Bond fans either don't really care for this or think it's good but not great at best. I personally think it's fantastic.) 6. Live And Let Die (RM, 1973) - 9.5/10 (If the the pointless Rosie character was cut out, it would easily get a 10.) 5. Goldfinger (SC, 1964) - 10/10 (A pure masterpiece. Probably the best Bond film for an upcoming fan to start on.) 4. The Spy Who Loved Me (RM, 1977) - 9.5/10 (If the villain was a little stronger, it would've easily gotten a 10.) 3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (GL, 1969) - 9.5/10 (If it was either Connery or Moore instead it could put up a strong fight for my absolute favorite Bond film.) 2. Skyfall (DC, 2012) - 10/10 (An absolute cinematic phenomenon.) 1. Casino Royale (DC, 2006) - 10/10 (YES! You and I have the same favorite Bond film! For me, Casino Royale is the definitive Bond film, the greatest action film I have ever seen and easily makes my top 50 favorite films OF ALL TIME! Just nothing short of a marvel in cinema.) My Personal Ranking Of The Bonds: 6. George Lazenby 5. Pierce Brosnan I really love all the other four. It was very hard to order them. 4. Timothy Dalton 3. Sean Connery 2. Daniel Craig 1. Roger Moore (It was kind of obvious.) It's funny how my two favorite Bond actors are the ones that are the most polar opposite.
