I have both the QHY183 and the ASI533MC Pro. I have a hard time deciding which one to use when I plan imaging. Both are excellent and both have their strengths and weaknesses. I would may add the ASI533 has absolutely no amp glow. Works fantastic with Sharpcap, assuming you live stacking and worry about amp glow, well, that's no problem anymore. Also crops in more for smaller targets and have a 50,000 well depth vs the QHY183c which has 15,000. More on this in a bit. The QHY 183, while has an amp glow and assuming everyone is taking darks anyway has a nice wide field of view and pinpoint stars and produces a very sharp images. Due to the small sensor, you may want to use light pollution filter though and keep your exposure time down, but make plenty of subs. Also extra note, the QHY183C cools down very fast and stays cold without trying too hard. The shallower well depth though, consider it's a tiny sensor and doesn't need a lot of exposure time to fill so far what works for me is short exposures with higher gain, you just gonna have to experiment with your sky and equipment to find the right numbers. Can't go wrong with either though.

I’m looking for a dedicated Astro camera that won’t break the bank and would be a good fit for a 60 mm refractor. I want really sharp stars and good details in my images.

Good video Mack! I liked the animations also! I used Nikon D7200 for most of my astrophotography and also 2 planetary cameras zwo 120mm-s and zwo224MC. I would like to try a dedicated camera also.
@NoNameNoFamily-n7x2 жыл бұрын
Very good, but you forgot to say that ZWO 294 has a significant glow effect, and 533, which was ranked lower, does not have such a glow effect at all, and the frame quality due to this is much better for 533.

Can you relate over sampling concepts when using these cameras with a 12 or 14” RC or CDk (f8).

Is shooting with a mirrorless very different from a DSLR? I'm trying to get in to astrophotography but there is so little I can find that references using a mirrorless camera
@nicnapier16533 жыл бұрын
I use a mirror less camera and it’s is basically the exact same as a dslr. They will require different adapters though since mirrorless cameras are smaller and need more spacers to achieve proper back focus. I would say only get a dslr or mirrorless camera if you are going to use it for other things like daytime photography or videography. I’m currently looking to upgrade from a Sony a6400 to a dedicated Astro camera, but have no idea what to buy. I’m using a 60mm refractor.

I started with my Panasonic Lumix G9 and a Panasonic-Leica 50-200 f/2.8-4 lens. I've since completely upgraded to dedicated astrophotography gear including the ZWO ASI294MM Pro, William Optics GT81 and iOptron CEM40 mount. However, to answer your question, you can pretty much use the terms DSLR and MILC (mirrorless) interchangeably :).

I have used a Fujifilm X-E3 compact system camera (CSC) that is a mirrorless camera with an APS-C sized sensor. I think that a mirrorless camera is better than an SLR because because there is no mirror to complicate matters and because they are thinner than a DSLR, it can be easier to get the correct the back focus. With all things equal, mirrorless cameras are lighter. I read that it is better to use the electronic shutter instead of the mechanical one because taking lots of subs can shorten the life of the mechanical shutter. Some telescopes cannot fully illuminate a full frame sensor so you might be better off getting an APS-C sized sensor. I find it useful to control the camera using Wi-Fi.

Mirrorless cameras vs DSLRs there isn't to much of a difference as far as Astro goes. But, since mirrorless cameras are newer technology you do get slightly better capabilities like taming noise, but we wouldn't say it should be enough to really make too much of a difference in astrophotography.

The 533 is probably the least expensive on this list, but DSLRs make great cameras as well and a good used one can cost under $500
