Emlyn Hughes was my favourite due to the atmosphere with the crowd and customisable options. Microprose was a fun arcade style football though. These were the 2 I played the most, I pretty much had most of the football games for the C64.

Superstar Soccer was made by Mindscape; and, Mindscape made another soccer game at about the same time as this game. It was the only officially licensed game for Indoor Soccer that I know of (ever) for the Major Indoor Soccer League from the 70's - 90's. It had the same game mechanics, animations, and joystick strategy screen that Superstar Soccer had. Being a fan of the MISL, I played the heck out of MISL Soccer.

First of all a belated thank you for this list. I know you made this video a while ago but i've been meaning to thank you as I think I was the first to request a top 5 soccer game list from you (on more than one occasion) :D . Also a thank you for the short throw to the movie "The Heartbreak kid" at 0:10. Its one of my favorite Australian movies and I actually scored the equalising goal against the school that this was filmed at in the knockout cup ( we ended up losing but I believe they went on to play in the semi finals of the school boys cup that year). Also the grounds that this was filmed at I have literally walked past hundreds of times - its where the Melbourne g.p. track is, anyways I digress but that's the reason for enjoying the throw back to that movie. Enjoyed how Street Sports soccer reminded you of your childhood years, the beauty of gaming is that it can bring back a ton of enjoyable memories. In terms of my top 5 soccer games, i'll go with Graeme Souness Soccer Manager Italy 90, International Soccer, Emlyn Hughes International Soccer and number 1 would be.... Microprose Soccer Truth be told though, although soccer is the worlds most popular sport, the C64 struggled in my eyes to make any soccer game that had some kind of longevity other than Emlyn Hughes and Microprose soccer. Some others are worth a play but probably not a heap of repeat plays in them- this is without me ever playing Superstar soccer (which I intend to do in the near future as its got a very good rating on lemon 64). Keep up the good work which is appreciated by all of us who love being teenagers, which is what happens when we watch your videos, for a short while we go back to that special place in time, a time of our teens.

2:22 on international soccer I used to be able to score straight from kick off every time and there was nothing you could do about it, well the CPU could never stop it and my friends never worked out a way to stop it. From kick off I could continuously bounce the ball of the players head as they ran towards goal, so they ran at full speed and not slower as players in possession of the ball do. It meant no opposition player could catch up. It would cause many of an argument with my friends. ;)

Never had Streets Sports Soccer, but I loved SS Basketball and had SS Baseball but was not very good at it. The Epyx music at the title and team selection screens was excellent. International soccer was the first game I got with my C64 back in '83, along with Jupiter Lander and Lazarian. I enjoyed it a lot as a kid. I tried a few other soccer games as a kid, including Match Day 2 (which sucked), but my favourite Soccer game was Ocean's Italy 1990. That was the most fun and playable for me. It was quite challenging, especially as the speed of the players is limited to the 'rank' of the team. So for instance if you play as Costa Rica against Germany, Germany will have MUCH faster running players. When I was younger I was skilful enough to be able to run the ball in circles around the goalie and then tap in. Plus I worked out the exact distance from goal you could always score from with a full power kick. I still play Italy 1990 to this day.

I played Microprose Soccer quite a bit for MS-Dos and I liked it a lot. When I got my own Amiga I played Manchester United Europe very much and loved it. I see there was a C64 version as well. My absolute favourite soccer games is probably Sensible World of Soccer. Later I also played several versions of Fifa, but after Fifa 98 Road to World Cup I got tired of the series.

I would put Microprose Soccer on top myself, had so many great games against my brothers. Superstar Soccer was known as Gary Lineker's Superstar Soccer in the UK/Europe, named after the England striker who won the Golden Boot for top scorer at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. (He had two other games as well, the overhead Hot Shots and the "training" game Soccer Skills). For me personally, Street Sports Baseball is the best of the series and Soccer is quite weak by comparison. (Interesting fact: Andrew Spencer, the programmer of International Soccer, went on to write International Basketball - and then moved to the USA, where he programmed Street Sports Basketball for Epyx).
@FloppyDeepDive2 жыл бұрын
Always enjoy you excellent insight into the games. Thanks for sharing! I agree SS Soccer is the weakest in the series. It's more of a nostalgic factor for me for that one. The other four are more of the games and gameplay itself.

No, soccer was not very popular at all in the 80’s in the US. It's still overshadowed by the big four. Thanks for the support!
@MegaasAlexandros2 жыл бұрын
Soccer was gaining big popularity in the mid 70s to early 80s in the states when big names came out to play. Unfortunately the MLS folded early 80s but for a while there it was on fire. The Us first division is very popular, with a crowd average of 22k it is one of the most popular competitions on the planet.
