Just wanted to say that Centipede for the 800XL was an old version originally released for the 400/800. However, a much better version of Centipede was released for the 5200 console, which had virtually the same hardware as the 800XL, so I'm not sure why Atari chose to release the older inferior version of Centipede for the XL.

Hi I'm ftom Australia and think C64 kind of ruled the turf here. Actually not to sound silly but after the 2600 Atari didn't really make a scene here until the 500 ST

My most valuable game is Donald Duck's Playground. The game itself is not rare, but none other than Al Lowe sold it from his own collection and also signed it. My personal little holy grail ;-)

I owned both a 800XL and C64. I do think the 800XL was a better computer, but you could not beat the games and add ons for the C64 I also had a JVC flat screen TV. I do believe it is what Commadore used for their monitor. Looked exactly like the Monitor over your shoulder but it was JVC

By comparing games made for each system, you may be able to compare the systems, but honestly its also about the homebrew scene too. For example, the NES is getting a brand new games called Former Dawn. The developer is using some new mapper with an FPGA to do bank switching on the fly. The game is estimated to be a few dozen MB in size. So its not just about the games made in the 1980's for these systems. These systems are constantly getting new games made for them. And new hardware can expand upon the capabilities of the consoles. What happened in the USA is that the Nintendo 8-bit console just took off while the Master System was left in the dust. Nobody that I knew from this timer period had a Master System. I think I only knew one person who had it and all I knew at the time was that, this was the console SEGA made before the Genesis. The Sega Genesis put Sega on the map and games like Sonic 2 were top tier. Also the box art and cartridge sticker art for the Master System had no appeal. You couldn't tell what the game was like based off of the box art. The Box artwork is the main selling point for games. You have to show everyone what the game is going to be like. Half of the entertainment value is the box and sticker artwork. The Master System didn't have that charm like the NES did. Also where is the Pause button on the Master System controller? Oh it doesn't exist. That was a missed move on Sega's part. Thankfully you can use a Genesis controller with the pause button on it, if the game's program supports it. This is the only way to go in my opinion. Playing the Master System with the Genesis controller.

As far as I can tell, the only difference between the Atari 8-bit and 5200 versions is that the latter has a sound effect when you kill enemies with your sword, while on the former there is no sound. It only makes sense that these versions play so well, as this was the home of Robert Jaeger's original 48k Montezuma. As we all know, that original version had all sorts of neat bells and whistles, but was never completed, which is why you couldn't defeat Montezuma. Thankfully, he has finally "completed" his masterpiece for modern platforms, which is just fantastic. I keep hoping that someone out there would translate the "complete" Montezuma for the Atari 8-bit computers, if just to bring it all back home.

UK here, I Grew up with Commodore pets at school, VIC20 then C64 at home, never knew anyone with a 400 or 800 Atari. Looking at KZbin videos the Atari can look better on some games and others the C64 looks better. I tended to buy games just for the music which the 64 is famous for. I used to be a fan boy but I can appreciate other systems now and am impressed with some later Amstrads. But back in the day the best machine was the machine you had.

I notice that Commodore 64 users never compare load time or how long it takes a commodore to load from a floppy disk as compared to the Atari. In our Atari group we used to say that by the time the Commodore has downloaded the same game, we've already finished it and gone on to another.

I would be comparing Fujinet on the Atari vs the Ultimate II+ on the C64.

At the time most C64 users used a speed loader cartridge and many games also had a speed loader build in. Loading times were not as a big issue as you might think.
@FloppyDeepDive9 күн бұрын
Loved my FastLoad Cartridge!
@addisonscott78089 күн бұрын
Atari didn't need this speed load cartridge. Our drives loaded very fast. And I'm taking about the old 810 drives. We also didn't have to rely on a speed driver built into the game. I had a buddy that had both the Atari 800 and a commodore 64. When we got together we played games on the Atari, so that we wouldn't be sitting around twirlingour thumbs waiting for a game to download.

With a 64 I'm sure you did.

If you are talking about hardware or arcade ports, it is the SMS. If you are talking about games that aren’t in the arcade, it is the NES.

The average game is better at the NES, you have to look a little bit further for a an equivalent on the Master System. But the graphics are much better - okay not the sound but at least as a kid with only Xmas / birthday gifts and your pocket money it’s not the important and the master system is an good equivalent with better graphics. Especially in Europe or Brazil the library is much better.

The NES came out over 3.5 years later apart from Japan at a time when computer power was close to doubling every 18 months and the Commodore 64 wasn't just a console, not really a fair comparison, but even 1 year later in Japan was a long time in those days. The NES should be better, especially when it's only purpose was gaming without having to worry about BASIC or even a keyboard, although the Commodore 64 still had better sound with SID chip tricks. The Amiga 1000 was released the same year as the NES in the West which obviously wiped the floor with it's predecessor and the NES, but it was expensive and wasn't popular for gaming until the Amiga 500 in 1987 when it's powerful hardware was really used.
@FloppyDeepDive13 күн бұрын
I think comparing it to an NES shows how amazing the C64 is even coming out in 1982.

Being in the UK i first had a spectrum, despite the C64 being strongly sold in the UK unlike the Atari, I got an Atari as it was better for programming and also had lot more wargames, SSI than the C64.
