TOP 5 Dos and Don'ts when working with 8 bit footage!
1.) DON'T use the eyedropper to pull keys.
2.) DON'T use a qualifier to fix skin tones.
3.) DON'T bring your footage directly into your editor.
4.) DON'T go into your grade without a plan.
5.) DON'T get discouraged if you aren't seeing the results you want right away.

This is probably one of the most practical Davinci Resolve tutorials for newbies like me shooting in 8-bit. There are tons of Davinci Resolve tutorials out there, but they are working on 10bit-12bit/Raw footages that are not applicable to what I shoot in. I'm quite sure I'm not the only one used eyedropper to correct skin tone, then everything else fell apart.

Your color looks excellent coming from 8-bit footage, while I am discouraged by the difficulties presented by not having access to 10 bit myself I am confident it will force me to be more intentional with my shots to achieve my desired look, which will hopefully snowball if I ever get to upgrade to 10 bit! 👍Cheers!

Given how many of us beginner/intermediates shoot with 8bit footage it's a shame that there aren't more tutorials specifically geared for us. I've been working through tutorials that clearly are meant for 10bit and whilst I can apply most of what is being demonstrated it fell apart for me with skin tones. Thanks for this video, I'll be working on my current video later today using the methods you've shown.

Thanks for the tutorial, but why is there so much noise during the talking head scenes while your explaining your process? Is that 8-bit footage that you pushed too far in the shadows? Or is it entirely youtube compression? Just curious
@jvke.p
@jvke.p 3 жыл бұрын
KZbin compression won’t add noise. The reason you see noise there is for 2 main reasons; 1) I grade in a fairly dark room, so I cranked the iso up a bit, which introduced noise. 2) I didn’t denoise that footage.

Not sure if on this image that using a preset would be better or worse. But telling people by example, by grabbing a bad key and comparing is misleading at best. You might have included the fact that the key can be restrained to confines of what is in a power window - if the key is affecting more than the skin, the first thing most colorists will do is put a power window on her head - track it, then pull the key. personally your vector key had way too much left to seriously do anything with it. Those kind of broad strokes are okay, but not very detailed for secondaries. 8 bit footage and 10 bit footage has more to do with luma than actual color deficiency. In most 8-bit cameras they pull off a decent look because the shadows and highlights that are harder to distinguish detail is recording less data per stop in them. Each color as you raise and lower luma values, have more color shades So in 8 bit there is 0 -255 shades from black to white, spread throughout - in the shadows for instance, can have very little values per stop and when you try to manipulate them - you can easily get artifacts trying to recover values that hasn't been written to it. But in 10-bit you have 0-1023 levels of black to white in each color. So when trying to massage or change the values - the software is not making best guesses as to what is required and gives a more accurate representation of the values. This is why - in 8 -bit exposure and lighting decisions are important to get from the source. The data recorded from the camera can be accurate in 8-bit- trying to change that data is the problem. Should be noted - you didn't imply this, but people should be aware that transcoding your footage does not add the data in or make it better for grading, in most cases transcoding to a less compressed codec like ProRes etc. is a visually lossless codec that runs better on most computers because the computer does not need to decompress every frame for playback, which makes it a better experience while using in an NLE.
@jvke.p
@jvke.p 3 жыл бұрын
well I couldn't disagree with you more on the first paragraph of your comment. for several reasons. but keep in mind this isn't a video targeted to professional colorists. windows and tracking are micro adjustments that have to be refined on every shot. the purpose of this tutorial is to show the broad strokes of color grading techniques, NOT detailed secondaries. especially when the additional information included in the key benefits from the adjustments made to the skin. thank you for defining 8 bit and 10 bit. although there is a reason I left it out and kept things over-simplified, AND noted that I was providing an oversimplification of the terms. Lastly, I SPECIFICALLY stated that transcoding your footage improves your computers ability to handle the footage, and does not improve the quality of the footage. your critique is almost a direct quote of what I said. thanks :)

Why shouldn't I use the eye-dropper tool for 8bit footage? Is it different for 10bit? Eye-opening tutorial, really helped me. Thank you!
@jvke.p
@jvke.p 3 жыл бұрын
Typically the eyedropper will be more restrictive in ways that don't lead to very useful or clean keys on 8 bit footage because the color information just isn't there. You can get by with it as a starting point, but even with 16 bit footage, you should typically do some manual finessing to ensure the cleanest key possible. or just avoid them entirely as I usually do. they're just a last resort 99% of the time.

You make two pretty obvious mistakes: 1. Not playing the clip to actually check if those compression artefacts were gone. Even if it was a still, explaining the importance of scrubbing frame is pretty 101. 2. Trying to pull skin tones AND simultaneously clip out garbage areas. Power masks [even without tracking] make this easier and more precise essential. Or at least mention them. I wouldn’t normally bother to post, but increasingly annoyed by supposedly ‘pro’ colourists handing out dodgy advice. If you’d called the video ‘things I’ve learnt’, it would have come across a bitter better. Even if the info was a bit duff. Sorry to be harsh!

If you’re shooting 8 bit footage…then resolve is way over your pay grade. With the new Sony a7S3 I’ll be shooting 12 bit, and hopefully in the future it will go to 16 bit. Can’t wait to put 16 bit into resolve. Resolve is an amazing program to be sure.
@jvke.p
@jvke.p 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely false. 8 bit is sill very common and very useful. I’ve shot lots of projects in 8 bit on the c200. No need to dismiss it. Resolve is built to handle everything from iPhone/GoPro to red/Arri. The a7siii requires an external recorder to shoot 12 bit, which would be prores raw I believe. And the difference between 16bit and 12bit is marginal.

The industry has only existed for 2 decades. I’d love to know what credentials you think are required for someone to be considered a colorist. I’d also love to know what you considered to be “very bad advice”, since I only teach processes that have worked for me. I typically delete these comments but sometimes I like to leave them up for the world to see how stuck up some people can be, and to encourage them that even when they inevitably bump in to sad keyboard warriors like yourself who would never dream of confronting someone with this manner in real life, they can have the mental fortitude to just brush it off and keep moving forward. “A man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an opinion.”
