Not really, that rule really only applies if you know how to solve up to a 7x7. For cubes larger than 3x3 you need to know edge pairing and commutators. The 4x4 also has some annoying paritys that you would need to learn algorithms for as well.

I am a puzzle collector and I tell all my "wannabe" friends to buy every shape-mods they can, plus the "basic" cubes (2x2, 3x3, 4x4) and only one "big", at most the 7x7 - because I always say: "don't waste your money buying anything bigger than a 7x7, because solving a 17x17 is just as fun as solving a 5x5, and LESS FUN than solving a 4x4 (this is the point when they ask: "why?", and I tell them something about parity cases). And not mentioning the fact that huge cubes are boring. So, to sumarise, for beginners, this is a very cool basic collection: a) Get one of each basic: 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5; b) Get just ONE big cube, if you can waste some bucks, but go preferably for even-numbered ones (I recomend a 8x8, for best cost/benefit ratio); c) Get all shape-mods you find (Ghost, Axis, Mirror, Skewb, etc); d) Get at least one megaminx and one megamorphix (if money is not a concern, get also a 5x5 version of the megaminx, I forgot its name); e) Get one pyraminx (easy, but essential in a collection) and, if possible, a 5x5 pyraminx. f) Get the "square-1". After geting these ones, you are hooked, just keep searching and have fun!

Very interesting puzzle and indeed something I've noticed as well. Noncubers often overestimate puzzles. I've got a lot of puzzles that are easier to solve than the regular 3x3 but look harder. For instance I have a Square-1 on my desk that next to a Moyu wheel of time. Recently, somebody saw me using the wheel of time and thought that it was extremely challenging (people seem to connect number of pieces with difficulty). A Square-1 doesn't look that intimidating although it is quite hard. But beside those hard-looking easy puzzles and the easy looking hard ones there are still a lot of puzzles that look exactly as hard as they are. My Square-4 is the best example. Yesterday I managed to solve a Square-2 but still am not able to beat the Beast. Are you good at Square-x puzzles?

The gear cube is definitely a good place to start as it works in a completely different way from a standard 3x3, however, also consider 3x3 shape mods, puzzles which work like a 3x3 rubiks cube which are more difficult due to being able to change shape. The Fisher cube is a good example of this.
@rosebuster6 жыл бұрын
This is true. I also have a mirror cube that was so confusing at first too, having to match pieces by shape rather than by colour. But now I can solve it quite smoothly. But I have an even more confusing 3x3x3 shape mod which is Meffert's Morph Egg. I was so stuck with this one at first. The shape makes pieces even harder to match with each other and because the puzzle has a few identical pieces as well as two pieces that look the same in every orientation, there are some funny problems you wouldn't get on a regular cube. Sometimes you have to swap identical pieces around to fix parity.
@bobmarley63066 жыл бұрын
Does the Meffert's Morph Egg have the same edge parity as the Fisher Cube?
@rosebuster6 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's the same. You can always solve the edges. Something else happens instead. If you swap one of the edge pieces for another, you'll end up with a single center rotated by 90 degrees.
@bobmarley63066 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh, so its to do with edge permutation. I see, this wouldn't be noticeable on a Fisher cube, (if you build your cross on white or yellow faces), since the white and yellow centres have no permutation. And it wouldn't happen on an Axis Cube, (another mod I own), where each edge has a clear permutation. But on the Morph Egg you could definitely put edges in the incorrect position without noticing. That's interesting to know thanks for telling me about this parity.
