I’ve been living in the Pattaya area including Jomtein and Pratanmak, for over 4 years, for me it’s the perfect place to live for convenience and affordability. I don’t go to bars, there’s a great expat scene here, I play in a badminton group, a running group, there’s yoga groups also and even pickle ball groups. Many fine gyms. I’am 71 and Pattaya has improved my health, fitness and social well being! As we get older, keeping fit and healthy is now my full time job. I’ve been to over 60 countries and this is my sweet spot!

I was considering Pattaya as a place to potentially retire to in the future. My one big gripe about Thailand is the poor dog culture but I have no direct knowledge/experience. I'm curious about first hand accounts what the dog culture is like in Pattaya? Are there rentals that allow dogs? Are dogs treated poorly etc..? Is it even feasible to have a dog as a pet there?
@roygoad28705 ай бұрын
@@Chris-zg7ty Some condos eccept dogs/pets! There are to many street dogs, there is very little management as the Thai Royal family love dogs the Thais follow suit. The majority of dogs are friendly enough, but there will always be the odd incident! I have friends who have lived here over 20 years and never had a problem! Many Thais and foreigners have dogs as pets as in the west!

Together as a bonded pair you are living in these places, and you will have, after that, the list of things you seek out: weather, water, mountains, walking, food, sights to see etc. I will agree with Lagos and Algarve Portugal as a Number 1 having visited last May. It was incredible, along with Lisbon and Porto. I am surprised that Thailand didn't have more of a presence on your list, especially the beaches. From you sharing what you enjoy in different locations for long stays, you might want to consider Balneario Camboriu just up the coast from Florianopolis. I left Denver 2 1/2 years ago. I first moved there in 1981. I left in 2000 and have moved back a couple of times. It has become crowded and incredibly expensive. There is traffic at every time of day. Skiing costs are prohibitive so you won’t be able to afford it on $3850 per month. Rent prices have soared, even outside of Denver. The average home costs $650,000 or more - that’s just the average cost. I think the cost of living is prohibitive for people with moderate incomes. I have lived in many states in the past 10 years after leaving my home in New York City. To summarize, as a resident now of the Midwest, my retirement plans have been gutted by rising costs. I have been seriously considering moving to France (not Paris!). Your videos are immensely helpful in informing my decision.

We spent 3 months in Buenos Aires in 2022 and plan to go back there again next summer which is winter there. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed BA as there's so much to do there and even though inflation is out of control, the blue dollar rate for USD is currently 1000 peso/$1 so everything will still feel like a bargain. For example, I joined a golf club and played 1-2 times per (mid-) week for $70/month. We saw symphony's, ballet's and Opera's, open-mic night (albeit they're all professionals) Blues bar and Jazz bars are easy to find. We went to many Ferias and museums and many open markets. Transportation to get anywhere is world class (sort of lol) such as buses, subways and trains. You can always get a taxi but will cost you 10X. For example, it was $0.25/bus ride, $0.35/subway or $0.45/train ride vs a taxi would cost you $5. If its not on your list of destinations, you should reconsider. It has such a rich history and the people there are fantastic.

@@RichardRice-cd3uw We stayed in Retiro between Florida St. and the Obelisk so that's literally the heart of Downtown and sure some areas after midnight were a little sketch but we never had any issues in the 3 months we were there. Petty theft like pick-pockets along Ave. Corrientes or Florida St. are what everyone warns you about but again, we never had any issues. The most popular/safest areas are Palermo, Recoleta, Belgrano which are all north-west of downtown and they say to not travel after dark in areas like La Boca and I can see that. My wife and I are both in our mid-fifties and never felt unsafe. We cashed out $1k at Western Union each month for spending money, stuffed all that cash in a backpack (literally bricks and bricks of peso's) and then rode the bus home but always during the day. I saw someone take out several thousands worth of USD (overheard them saying for employee payroll) and then immediately call a taxi once outside the door but again there's a line down the block with everyone taking out money. Pretty normal stuff.

Very affordable great transportation. Keep an eye on your cellphone. The only real downside for me were the mosquitoes. It’s a great place for walking and the people are so friendly.

I am glad Alicante was on the list. Next month we are going there for the 4th time since seeing your video over 2 years ago. Has everything for me. Near to airport, lovely beach, marina, great market and shops and also the Red Corner bar! We have been to the Algarve too and that is lovely tp relax but personally didn't think it has as much as Alicante. We will probably go to Split at some point. Thanks for another great video

I love the Algarve and it was my #1 spot to return to but I haven’t yet. I haven’t returned because a year after discovering the Algarve, I discovered San Sebastián, Spain. The best food scene, especially in Old Town, plus there are beaches. I’ve been back 2 additional times.

I think you said you want to explore the Southern coast of Spain. Malaga is fabulous, Marbella's Plaza de las Naranjas is worth a look, but Estepona , with it's long, flower-lined promenade and miles of wide, sandy beaches, is somewhere you should not miss. Plaza de los Flores is gorgeous, indeed all of the extensive old town is fab. The port is lovely and the many parks are amazing. The bicycle trails are awesome and there are free exercise parks dotted all over the city.

Thanks for sharing. Happy to see you guys enjoying, reflecting and learning from your travels. One of my favorite sayings is "the more I travel, the less I know". And that reflects as I do my top 5 list. It changes based on what stage of life I'm in, also as I transition from traveling solo, to travelling with wife, to now traveling with family. Cheers and safe travels!

There's something about the sound of waves washing upon the shore and the smells of the saltwater and the ocean. The mountains are nice but for shorter periods. Cities are wonderful for the energy and cultural venues. Small town centers are nice for that old fashion neighborhood feel. So you two did a wonderfully balanced top 5. Brian, not sure why you like walking on pomegranates...🤔😉 Side note. How was the waves in the Algarve? For surfing 🏄♂️ 🌊 The west coast north of Lisbon being one of the top surfing spots but a little to crazy for a family surfing trip.
@BrianandCarrie7 ай бұрын
Yes, the sound of the waves is a major selling point! There were waves in the Algarve when we were there, very manageable. Thanks so much for watching! Cheers 🍻

Having visited in May 2023, I can say that the waves around Armação de Pêra weren't huge and the water was quite cold! I did swim but it was "refreshing" as Brian would say. I did not see any surfers. Of course in other parts of Portugal you can try Nazare to reach 100 ft waves in November. In May it was much more manageable, but still chilly. Enjoy your visit.

Thanks for sharing your list. Will add them to our travel plans for the next few years! I think we like larger cities, which would include Istanbul, Paris, London, Porto, and perhaps even NYC. For your 2025 planning, please consider Buenos Aires, which is one of my favorites in South America. Also, we are in Lima, Peru for the next few weeks - let me know if you have questions about what to do and where to eat (my wife is from her) here.

Great list; all compelling locations in their own ways. My international scenario, as I keep saying and when I'm leaning away from a hill in Texas, has been consistently Greece (Paros or Lefkada) or Portugal (Madeira), but with recent inflation, I'm taking a closer look at Albania. One of the things that is appealing about Albania beyond the cost of living and a very interesting looking place in its own right, is the location. You can pretty much throw a rock from Saranda and hit Corfu, you're next door to Montenegro, which looks very cool, and places like Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Romania, and somewhat even Turkey are not that far to visit. And a live-aboard motor "yacht" adds a very interesting element to it all.
@BrianandCarrie7 ай бұрын
Living on a yacht is compelling all on its own. Albania also has 1 year visa for US citizens. We really liked our stay in Saranda, but the infrastructure kept it out of our top 5.

Great video, you definitely need to get to Japan though IMHO! The Yen has depreciated 50% over the last few years so is now 155 to the dollar, back to where it was in 1990. A few caveats though for Japan (and any other destination): timing is everything, some places have unbearable weather certain times of the year, lovely the other. I think you travel a lot during shoulder seasons which is a great idea. I wouldn’t do the Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto route during Summer, horribly hot & humid. Spring Cherry Blossom/Fall foliage will be very crowded but beautiful. Try visiting places outside the Main tourist areas, you could easily spend a few months in Japan and would love it I think.

It's funny what different people prioritize as far as a long-term stay. Obviously, this is a personal decision, but for me I enjoy culture and history, along with scenery and opportunities for hiking and biking. Personal safety and ease of getting around are also high on my list. My top choice for a long-term stay in that regard is The Netherlands! I did live there for a year and I've spent weeks there on leisure travel, so I speak from experience. To be avoided in the winter, but otherwise a delightful place to stay long-term if you can afford it!
