🌸 My debut book NIMA is out now: rossdraws.com/nima
Hey everyone! After SO much Nima content (which i love btw), it felt right to get back to basics and make an instructional art video. I normally like to focus on the positives, but it was finally time to address some of these common mistakes. There's a ton of content out there discussing "top" mistakes, but these five personally apply to me. I'll be honest, sometimes it pains me to reach deep into the vault and pull out some of these early pieces to prove a point, but if you all can learn from my mistakes then it's definitely worth it. Hopefully I can give you a different perspective and help you address your own top mistakes. Whatever you do, keep making art!

One of my biggest mistakes was composition (rule of thirds, direction, focus etc.), all of my illustrations back then are disorganized and don't have anything significant within the piece. I might even be doing the same mistake now but at least I notice I'm improving on it 👌

I recommend 3 things for you: One is taking your own photo references (Of yourself or someone helping you, so you have exactly the position you want), second is buying a figurine that you can pose to grab references (the usual ones for art are those made of wood, very simple shapes, I don't really like them but you can try). Third advice I can give you is getting a program like poser for example, that let's you position a character in a 3d space the way you want, and use that as a reference. Hope these 3 advices help you :P

my biggest regret and mistake, is that ive been drawing for 3 years so far, but in the first 2 years i drew like once a week and barely even practiced which made my art improve REALLLYYY slowly And i wondered why my art wasnt good enough..well no wonder why. it wasnt until a year ago i started to do a few practice sketches a day and try to experiment with styles and poses, honestly i improved way more than before (Not to mention, i used to only draw headshots 3/4 for 2 fuckin years). A thing im tryna improve on right now is making my composition cool with cool angles, a really good tip i can give is basically you dont have to show everything in the picture just cuz you drew it, some parts can be taken out to show the focal point, even if it means cropping some parts out. Good luck everyone!!

I feel that 😭😭 I was born with zero talent when it comes to art. When I started drawing (I was around 11/12 years old) I only drew chibis and straight on faces with zero variation. I still enjoyed it sooo much that I kept drawing these things for like 3 years and that was the point when I finally switched to realism and stuff and sadly I realised I didnt learn a lot till then. 3 years wasted :)))) Afterwards I had too much going on with school so I was focusing on the right things, but I barely spend time actually drawing, so another couple years wasted.. But half a year ago I finally understood that I wanna become an artist, no matter what and now Im paying as much attention to my art as possible :) Better late than never!

A common mistake I see digital artists make is treating every part of an outfit or hair as a separate picture with no relation to each other - this or that isn't casting any shadows or reflections on the items around it, everything has a different color palette with different tones in the shadows and highlights... then it looks like a paper doll made from newspaper cutouts, not a unified image, yannow? My own most common mistake is wildly over- or under-estimating how big my canvas needs to be. I end up with a ton of marginal space with nothing in it, or a resolution so small I find out too late I can't edit any details anymore.

The 2nd advice is soooo true! Back when I was a student, my art teacher always told me to not lean in too close when drawing, and to always try to stand up and step back for a moment from time to time, so that I can see the drawing as a ''one big picture'', and not just focusing on a particular part of the drawing. Because only when you do that can you see if your drawing looks weird or not. I have been forgetting that too, so thank you for the reminder! And btw, yes, color dodge is love 💕💕

Leongon draws stuff Funny comparison, but stealing physical items is not the same as duplicating a program’s license from an infinite supply. Adobe is outrageously expensive and has a near monopoly on the art industry. They also have terrible anti-consumer practices, mainly when they turned all their software into subscription-based services upwards of $1,000 a year just to milk corporations. Adobe is the only company I’m morally acceptable with pirating, as should everyone else.

My BIGGEST art mistake, was probably thinking I could never do good lineart. So what did I do to fix this? I used the circle tool for every. single. line. For any line, I just resized the tool and then traced the line. It took SO long and I absolutely KNEW that it wasn’t going to work, but I did it anyway.

Hey Ross! You're my favourite artist and I've always wondered how you get your sketches to a finished piece. I can't seem to wrap my head on how to make such a clean digital painting from a rough sketch like you do. I'm so used to using linearts/inking with very clean hard shading and I kinda want to break that kind of habit.

I mean I feel like “ dull shadows” are preference and not a mistake . They can drive an emotion that can’t be seen with saturated tones
@raiiven5268
@raiiven5268 3 жыл бұрын
Rren Dre I was just thinking this! That painting he showed (girl with the hat) looked just as good before as it did after - the two versions just gave a different feel and it’s a matter of what effect you’re going for that determines how saturated the shadows should be. However I do think that advice is for beginners only cause they might mistakenly?? Use really dull shadows due to not having so much knowledge on shading/lighting etc.
