I've been playing for half a year now, and the best advices I can give new players is to Disc down, if your lower speed or mold disc is flying as far as your higher speed or molds when you throw 80% power, stick to the lower. Don't be afraid to try throwing a higher speed or different mold every now and again. You'll be surprised and be able to gage your progression based on how well you can throw your once very over stable disc as you grow into the sport. Last advice, don't beat yourself down if you can't stay on the fairway, instead look for windows where the disc lay, the more shot type you learn, the more windows you'll see. Best of luck and happy holidays! Let's keep'em slinging!

If you do go distance driver go with a light weight like a 150g sapphire. That’s what I started throwing distance with and it worked great and was able to get full flight

One of my 3 aces was a forehand skip ace with a Destroyer on a 187 foot hole. :) I don’t use a Destroyer anymore, though, for the reasons you mentioned here. Since I gave it up, my backhand has gotten a lot better, but I’m still a noodle arm. :) Ah, and another of my three aces was the same hole with a backhand midrange. (Göte)

I think a beginner should get an understable, neutral, and overstable disc of each category of disc; mid, fairway, and distance driver. I wouldn't even focus at all on "throwing" putters. Just 1 putting putter that feels good in the hand. Go to a field and throw all 9 discs on the same line and see what they do. Repeat several times.

I had good friends that picked up DG before me that didn’t lead me astray. My first purchased discs came in the Discraft starter set: challenger, sol, and heat. Throwing putters, mids, an approach disc you like (I prefer the Järn), and neutral fairways has been money for my game. “DX” and other baseline plastics are not bad for beginners, I personally prefer them in everything but drivers. I absolutely agree with avoiding random non-DG manufactured discs unless you’re just goofing off with the homies.

I started disc golf with my dads old discs. My main disc (not knowing anything at all about numbers or flights really at all) was an and PFN star MAX.

Before i REALLY knew what flight numbers meant my family got me a destroyer because the stamp looked like a Transformer and i was into Transformers. Yes, a forehand was about the only way i could get distance out of it.

I use a Harp for approach and it's been money for me lately even with 4|3|0|3 and my noodle arm. I don't plan on using anything faster than an 8-speed until I get up to 300ft so I stick with a 155g Diamond.

Hey I love my DGA Sail thing is so fun to throw and watch it S every time how could you say it is the #1 wrong thing to have. Somehow I turn over my Blizzard Teedevil all the time though so I don't know where my arm speed is at. This is why I bought a Techdisc cuz I'm tired of not knowing which parts of my throw need improvement.

I think the putter stability really depends on the players hand size finger strength etc. But in general probably best to use something like a judge 2 4 0 1 or something more natural like a pure 3 3 -1 1

My first discs were DX Innova and based on name or picture! Today I’d suggest a well known mid, putter and fairway (eg Aviar, Roc, Leopard or judge, truth, maverick). Learn them for a while, then start expanding.

Lightweight DM Active Line and L64° SPZ starter packs were my first... Then I got hold of a FLX Buzzz, a beat in DX Valkyrie and a R-Pro Wahoo... after a while a new DX Valkyrie, Retro Ballista Pro (Still too OS ofc) and an Opto River. Now more than hundred discs later I know that a Destroyer isn't for me, hardly even a Wraith, but got some real bangers of discs next to me here ;)

As a relatively new member of the disc golf society...(july) my annoyance is how unreliable some flight numbers are, or make others look ridiculously different because some numbers for instance i can throw the innova boss 13 5 -1 3 and the ballista by latitude 64 14 5 -1 3 however i cannot keep the thought space synapse up and going at 12 5 -1.5 3 & i can throw my westside (stay off the westside) queen 14 5 -3 2 with ease...so i presume their (thoughtspace) plastic is much more than a 3 fade, I'd almost say like a 5 fade...

I've seen it more and more that kids that just started playing disc golf almost exclusively use special editions of discs that pros use. Like all halo or colour glow or a certain run of like retooled Fd2:s. Only the putters are in base plastic. Although I think this was more common about a year ago than it has been now, those kids might have noticed that there are legitimately better options for them.

The biggest tip i give beginners is to avoid big speed number big rim drivers and to understand that distance comes from form BEFORE disc. I say that as i still have discs in my bag that i don't have the arm or form for. Lol

00:29 🥏 Avoid using overstable drivers as a beginner, as they can hinder your learning progress and prevent you from mastering important techniques like throwing S-shaped flights. 03:46 💰 Beginners should avoid buying expensive or tour series discs initially, as they may not be sure if they'll continue to enjoy disc golf. 05:34 🚫 Stay away from really cheap off-brand discs found in retail stores, as they can be unstable and break easily, providing a poor experience for beginners. 06:45 🎯 Avoid using overstable and low glide putting putters as a beginner, as they can lead to right-missing putts and are better suited for advanced players with precise wrist snap. 09:58 🚀 New disc golfers should steer clear of understable distance drivers until they gain the necessary experience and throwing speed to control them effectively.

The leopard is the biggest trap in my opinion. Dx is terrible and the leopard comes in innovas starter set. Can’t tell you how many people I’ve had to tell it’s not a good disc to learn with.

I started off buying 22 discs. I watched a bunch of videos and chose beginner friendly, and intermediate types of discs. For me, I’ve just been slowly building towards the distance drivers. I like having them in my bag so that I can try throwing them, but also still have all the beginner discs that I need to develop the skill to throw the drivers. I would say your tip on not buying the more expensive disks only applies to people wear money might be an issue. From my experience, buying all the disks from the beginning, made it so I could practice with different ones. I think the best tips for beginners is to make sure you at least have beginner, friendly discs. And then everything you buy with or after that can be whatever you want. I have a 10, 11 and 12 speed driver and I’m slowly learning how to throw them properly. For me having the option and being able to practice with those discs made it more interesting. Learning how different types of discs fly also has helped me learn which types I like at the moment. If money is not an issue for you, I would recommend getting a bunch of different kinds with different flight numbers. Or get different kinds based off of recommendations from KZbinrs. It’s just fun to be able to go through a large bag of discs and pick the perfect one for the situation. But if money is a problem, make sure you at least get three beginner discs that have good flight numbers for a beginner.
