I do surtitles for an opera company. Before every performance - and during intermissions - I put up the "turn off your f**king phones and other electronics" title. It’s worded a little more politely, but that’s how we refer to that title amongst ourselves. And EVERY time I put up that title, I can see people in the audience pull out their phones to turn off the ringer. People don’t have the foresight or courtesy of thinking about it themselves. Seeing as how I’m in a soundproof booth with the stage audio piped in over a small speaker, I don’t actually know if any phones ring during the performance, but I’ve heard stories from the crew talking about the craziest ringtones they’ve heard in the middle of an act. Turn off your phones in every theatre you enter, people.

Btw, the Nokia ringtone (the one that shows up everywhere) is actually a guitar piece called "Gran Vals" by Francisco Tárrega. He simply played the original piece back at the ringtone

I was at a concert where the pianist was playing all of Chopin's OP 25 etudes and a phone went off. He stopped and said "is that for me?"

In the first one, I don’t think he was distracted to the point of stopping. He’s skilled enough to continue, but didn’t because was offended by the audience’s phone.

I sat in the balcony of the Lyric Theater in Stuart, Fl, and I could hear a very audible medical respirator device that was attached to a man who had been pushed to just ahead of where his caregiver had a seat. So he was to the left of the conductor and in the aisle. The continuous swoosh of the machine bothered me and after the first piece one of the violinists turned to where the noise was coming from and gave him quite a firm look of agitation and disbelief. This was before the age of cell phones. Another unfortunate time was when seated in the balcony at the old Toronto symphony hall and a young Yo Yo Ma was performing. So along comes this inebriated man who falls into the seat next to me and leans over on my shoulder and proceeds to say quite loudly that he used to play the violin in that orchestra. I had to leave and try to get him out of there. In both cases where were the attendants who should be protecting the sanctity of the performance?
