I remember once I had to play a really fast-paced piano piece( called Solfegetto) for a huge competition . I barely started when my mind just blanked out at the notes and I stopped. I tried again, but again stopped at the same time, and I wasnt sure if I was allowed to retry again. Normally I would be freaking out, but for some reason I just quietly turned to the judges and asked if I would be allowed to try again a last time. They nodded, so I was able to get back on track and finally finish the piece. I ended up winning second place and I am very grateful but it still puzzles me how the heck I managed to stay calm. I guess I'm just dead inside lol.

An unfortunately worded title. When Vika's piano string breaks, it's not her fault. The full story: When that string broke, Vika was unable to play several pieces she practiced for the recital. Instead, she selected others in her repertoire. Additionally, she had to transpose the music key signatures on the fly, in real time, so as to avoid using the broken key. I'm not trying to be an internet white knight here. Just saying: she should be celebrated for her talent and virtuosity in a difficult situation.

When I was a teenager, I used to see the BSO at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. One time, during a symphony by Sir Michael Tippett, if I recall correctly, a bat emerged from the rafters and repeatedly buzzed the orchestra. The players looked uncomfortable but carried on as if nothing was bothering them. I must say I came away deeply impressed by their professionalism.

I was at the 100th Anniversary of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1991. The program was identical to their very first one. And the great 3 Musical Directors, Rafael Kubelik, George Solti & Daniel Barenboim were there. Barenboim was on piano in the middle of Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 1 - and all of a sudden a low-sounding beep started. It was in the audience, but because of the acoustics, it seemed it came from everywhere. The entire audience kept looking everywhere to no avail. Of course, the orchestra had to stop. Ushers were up and down the aisles trying to find those blasted beepers!!! Then, more started! They were coming from so many devices around entire Concert Hall and people began trying to hold back their laughter. Then, George Solti asked for people to check for their beepers (this was 1991) and so did the very old Kubelik who, at first, was terribly upset and befuddled. 😂 The ushers began finding the devices. Someone or a few people definitely had FUN planning THIS FIASCO!! What was discovered was this: Prior to the concert, CSO held the annual dinner with The Who’s Who being there. During the dinner, about 30 to 40 people Patrons had received a gift. They were all WATCHES wrapped up in a box from CSO to thank them for their ongoing support. When they all had arrived at the concert, they either put them under their seats or in the wives’ bags, etc. The scoundrels who had wrapped the watches had set them to certain times! They intentionally had that one watch’s alarm to go first. Then another, another, and then the rest of them at the same time! When Barenboim announced it from the stage, everyone began to laugh along with the 3 Conductors. It turned out to be one hell of a nasty trick to play, but nobody who was there will ever forget that hilarious event. 😂😂

Alas, it happens all the time these days. This was one of the worst: two years ago we heard Jeffery Tate doing Mahler's 9th, during the final bars, just as the music was fading away like the dying breath of a terminally ill patient finally passing after so much struggle and anguish, a mobile phone started ringing. The upside: it was a single note ringtone perfectly in tune with the music - as Maestro Tate pointed out to a friend of mine a few days later (probably he needed to find an optimistic angle to metabolise his anger). But can you imagine the frustration of having an hour and twenty minutes of focus and intense emotional investment destroyed by some idiot who forgot to turn off a fucking device.
@elguitarolerno

Some people cannot turn off their phones for fairly obvious reasons rather than simply forget, and in all those instances it is far more important that they do not switch off the phone than the precious musician gets interrupted. Fact of life my friend.

But that's apart from everything else. er... abit from everything else. Maybe she was there on vacation during a holiday when one usually takes a vacation if it doesn't fall on a national holiday. If a vacation falls on a holiday, does it count as a holiday or a vacation day? Some people used up their vacation days by going on holiday and forgetting to use their vacation days. Personally, I don't know how one goes on a holiday. Does one jump on a president? It's all very confusing. It's enough to make a momrath outgrabe.
