That’s so exciting! I never thought the day would come for my son. I always assumed that he would communicate with us differently (and that was okay!) so we gave him a voice with sign language and then an aac device and shortly after something clicked and he started talking. It was very hard in the beginning when I got my son and daughter’s diagnosis so I started gardening. It really is the most wonderful and healing hobby. So happy to see another autism mama with the same passion! 😊

Gardening has always been my happy place. I call it my Dirt Therapy. When my children were little there was always a travel alarm clock in my gardening basket so that I wouldn't miss their bus drop off 😂 It's so easy to lose track of time... Now my youngest grandson, he's autistic as well, loves to get out and enjoy some dirt therapy too💗 His absolute joy is watering, making pretty rainbows and snacking on his cherry tomatoes.

My son just turned 10 and he has level 3 autism and is nonverbal. Well according to that description. He says so many words now. He has learned to express what he wants or needs or just to be silly. I never thought I would hear his voice. He is such a blessing to us. I love your garden and I myself just started gardening this year and love it!

Hi, Melissa! I love that I found another Zone 9b garden to follow., thanks to Janey and her garden tours. We have a grandson who was diagnosed as being on the spectrum when he was about 2 or so. Truly some difficult years for my daughter and her husband and they explored different avenues of treatment. Now he's 16 and thriving and actually, I don't think he is considered to be on the spectrum now, but don't quote me. Anyway, love your garden and what you've accomplished. Your love for your space shows. Best wishes for success with your garden and love to your son!

Awww thank you so much! I use the plant tone from Espoma in the early spring and then again late may. I’m trying out this year every other week fertilizer with liquid maxsea in my hose end sprayer. So far it’s looking very happy!

I have such mildew issues with all my roses… drives me crazy… I’m zone 9b SoCal

I have had that issue on 3 of my new roses this year, I got the rose rx from bonide in the concentrate and mixed it up in a spray bottle. After 2 weeks and 2 applications, the powdery mildew was gone. I think it’s because we have had an unusual cold spring. Good luck with your roses, they are worth it ☺️

Thank you so much! I use the 1 gal per hour and water daily for about 40mins, during heat waves I add in extra 10 mins in the afternoon or hand water a little extra. Once the roses go dormant in winter I water maybe once a week unless we have rain.

Love, love, love that there's another CA Zone 9 channel! Yay! I also began working in the barren backyard in 2020. I started by buying my favorite - hydrangeas- and have ever since been trying to create enough shade to where they can survive the blazing hot summers. A little backwards, I know. Hi! Great video, your garden is lovely! I found you through Janey. 😊 I wanted to say that I had a son with special needs and I began gardening as a way to calm my nerves and mind. Then when he passed away at age 7 I jumped in head first. I suddenly found myself with more time than I knew what to do with, so gardening became even more of an important thing in my life. His name was Jack and recently I found a PW clematis named “Happy Jack” and had to have it! I have just found so much comfort and meaning in growing and nurturing these flowers that bring me so much joy and make me feel closer to God and to my son.

My brother has 3 boys...two of which are Autistic. One is 17yrs old and very high functioning and the middle is 15yrs and is very low functioning. I have been an elementary school teacher for 22 years so I feel I've seen the whole spectrum. LOL I love your garden. SO GLAD Janey introduced you to me!

Hi Melissa. Beautiful garden. I started my garden in 2020 as well. Who knew I would enjoy it so much . I’m looking to get another David Austin Rose. I’m looking for a climbing variety any suggestions? I already have Princess Margarette, Wollerton Hall, Lady of Schallot, and Teasing Georgia . I would like it to grow up a trellis I build out of cow panels which is attached to a fence wall but goes past the fence vertically as an extension to provide privacy so I’m needing something bushy and dense. I was wondering about climbing Eden?

Thank you so much! If you like pink roses the David Austin strawberry hill is gorgeous, the eden has a bit more bushy leaf canopy and the blooms hold on for days. The next climber I want is the Claire Austin, it’s supposed to have a slight vanilla scent and creamy white blooms. A wall of roses sounds like a dream! I’m sure it will be beautiful 🥰
