As far as I agree with your rankings, I would personally replace Adrynn with Emet Selch from FF14 Shadowbringers. Emet Selch had such a fantastic personality and most importantly backstory and motivation in the story, that you, even thou he is a villain, did care about him and his plot threw out the expansions.

Ardyn has set the bar so high on being charismatic, I doubt any future villain in single player Final Fantasy will come close. They might be complex and interesting, but I can't imagine another perfect combination of voice acting, motion capture, dialogue, and personality being as engaging as Ardyn.

I think it's great that people loved Ardyn. Don't get me wrong. Absolutely not trying to sway anybody into also not liking him. But when I see comments like this it just feels like we played a completely different FF15. Ardyn just didn't hit for me at all. There's a lot there that I think is great on paper, but the execution of it left me feeling underwhelmed. Not to mention that I think his outfit looks a bit silly, and his creepypasta face with the dark tears and black eyes with yellow pupils and the joker smile goo he has on one side was too much. I had to laugh when I first saw this. For me personally, Emet-Selch is the FF villain that I would say has set the bar high on being charismatic. Ofcourse that is not singleplayer FF, but I haven't felt this fulfilled by a FF villain since FF9. And I love FF10 and 12. But that's just me.

Good stuff! Always enjoy your discussions. I remember I always used to think FF villains were a bit weak - that the heroes always had multifaceted backstories and motivations, while the villains could be a bit transparent or one note. Kefka was certainly entertaining, though he was very much a bad guy. Sephiroth in the original FF7 just came off as a bit too glazed over and messianic at the time for me to connect with much. But then Caius came along and had overtly sympathetic intentions; saving the person you love at all costs would be a hero arc in many other stories, so I thought that was nicely tragic and I really liked that. And then Ardyn came along and was just my favourite character in anything, haha. I think his motion capture does a lot; his amazing swagger in Lestallum when walking to the car was just "Yes. This guy is the best" haha. And I love that his arc is almost like...if the Jesus story went wrong and turned into the Count of Monte Cristo. That's wonderful. And because he's never totally honest, it leaves so much room for ambiguity; even when I finished the game I found I could go back through all his scenes and think "Huh. What was he *really* thinking in this moment?". Also, his actor in every language is having a ball; if you haven't checked out the French dub, he's tremendous haha. I'm seeing a number of people mentioning Emet from FF14 - I've checked out his scenes, he's pretty good. Though I think Zenos is probably my favourite in that game; his monologue in the flower field is outstanding, and his English actor did that tremendously.

these are good villains but there's a few honorable mentions i'd like to suggest.: Professor Hojo (ff7, ff7R, Dirge of cerberus) he's just that villain you're looking forward to putting in his place Sin (ff10) seymour is good but Sin is the big thing that sets the game in motion and the thing you working on beating for the whole game while constantly being built up. he's like a force of nature and personification of death both in one. Emet Selch (ff14) he's a villain that i could actually see and understand his side of things. his motives, reasoning, and goals are all reasonably justified to the point i would genuinely consider being on his side. Zenos Yae Galvus (ff14) he's a villain that has been built up since ARR where he was mentioned, Heavensward where he is introduced to us the player, stormblood where we come face to face in game and even battle, shadowbringers where he rises to even more power in our absence and now soon to be endwalker where he is the big climactic main villain. 8 years of build up to pay off this next expansion but until all is said and done i hesitate adding him to a proper list.

Sin isn’t a villain.

I really like Ardyn. And sadly I think he gets slept on a lot because, like a lot of the characters in FFXV, he's a victim of choppy storytelling. By playing just the main game you really only a small glimpse into why he is the way he is --- and the backstory is just provided in the form of a badly edited exposition dump near the end of the game. The DLC expands on him A LOT and does a much better job exploring the nuances of the tragedy of his character. The only thing I don't really like is that I sometimes wonder if the developers couldn't decide on Ardyn's motives. And I'm not talking about Episode Ardyn, in which we see a future where he takes a bit of a different path --- but in other material that came before it. Like extra dialogue appearing in the FFXV pocket edition, or in the Extra Verse of the Ignis DLC. The idea that Ardyn was so consumed with hatred for his brother that he was willing to be played like a pawn so he could end the Lucian bloodline and then finally just die and be free of his curse is incredibly tragic, but there are a few instances throughout the overall narrative that seem to contradict this --- and honestly, portray him like more of a victim of his own arrogance than anything else.

Definitely my top 2 are Kefka and Sephiroth. I feel like Kefka has a more complex personality and actually accomplishes his goals compared to Sephiroth, but Sephiroth got the most exposure due to ff7 popularity and I think he is more of a force of "twisted" and artifical nature per say (since spoilers killed one of the most popular characters which never happened before). They are both terrifying in their actions and motivations.

@allusive2903 Жыл бұрын
Mine too. He has so much depth, and is very complex too. And you are right, he’s quite possibly the smartest.
@Killshotarcher Жыл бұрын
@@allusive2903 Especially since when you boil it down, Vayne confirmed to his father that he personally thinks his hands are too stained with blood and has committed too much evil to be the good ruler Ivalice desearves. He want's Larsa to rule but Larsa is to kind hearted and soft to do what Vayne feel's like needs to be done. So Vayne's plan in all is take over the world and hand the reigns of the future of man kind to Larsa while ripping it away from the Occuria. And for the most part aside from the world domination part he was 100% completely successful in his goals. House Solidor is the reigning power of the empire and the Occuria no longer guides the fate of man. Another reason I think Vayne is the best villain in the series is honestly, he's just a guy. Aside from his military authority there's is nothing special about him. Hell i think he's the only primary antagonist in the series who when confronted by the party fight's utilizing martial arts (First phase) instead of any grandiose weapon or all powerful magic. Add the withy the genuine comradery he has with Cid and Venat and we result in what honestly the most human villain in the series.

I've always wondered why Jecht is the "villain face" of FFX and not Seymour. I mean, I get what happened to Jecht, but Seymour still makes more sense, imo.
@rogthepirate45933 жыл бұрын
Same. Jecht is ultimately a decent guy. Seymour is just a major dickhead.
@emptilion2 жыл бұрын
Jecht represents Sin as well, he is the final boss (I don't count Yu Yevon) and he has a stronger personal connection to Tidus. So I would say they prefer using him in something like Dissidia because there's just more to do with him. Seymour is more Yuna's villain.

I love your views and explanations of each of these villains. Ardyn's story has effected me emotionally more than any other FF villain. More than any villain in general, actually. But along with him, my other favorites are Sephiroth and Caius. I love their intimidating presence and their back stories as well. Especially Cauis's motivation and the amount of theory around what's REALLY going on with Sephiroth and his actions.
@samipalmquist36372 жыл бұрын
For the other two in my top 3, I'd have to go with Kuja and Bunivelze. Kuja because I just love the story and connection between him and Zidane. And Bunivelze, because his design and power and level of intimidation floored me the first time I played Lightning Returns. I was terrified of him. So much that I went through multiple new game+ before finally actually fighting him again, and at least for me, he was still difficult! Granted, I'm not a professional or amazing gamer but.. I think I'm at least average. So having a final boss be that difficult, unlike the ones I was used to like Yu Yevon, was so refreshing!

Makes me wonder if there will ever be a villain in FF or from SE in general that will the embodiment of of an old phrase. "You'll either die as a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain." Everytime I think of FF or SE villains this phrase always comes to my mind
@AlleywayJack2 жыл бұрын
Agree, it's a very interesting villain type, but also one I think is hard to pull off well - you need that legitimate descent into what is perceived by the audience as bad, not just an arbitrary switch-up. Two-Face in Batman and Walter White in Breaking Bad are some instant examples I think managed the transition really well. Would love to see an FF villain go that way.
@Lu666Ka600AA3 жыл бұрын
In terms of FF7, Hojo feels to me like the unrightfully rarely mentioned evil/antagonist of the whole story who I think deserves alot more merits; compared to Sephiroth whose storyline in FF7 was arguably poorly executed (and altered at some point before release), aside from the outstanding way he was presented (which the "remake" managed to ruin entirely anyway) Hojo represents the human's bypassing of morality and ethics in favour of unraveling the misteries of science; this essentially brought upon the crysis of the Planet by means of a deadly , incredibly dangerous monstruosity as his lab tool (Jenova), its hybrid-spawn (Sephiroth) and Hojo's brain alone, everything done behind the scenes, without even majorly interacting with any other character until the very end in which he completely loses his sanity and actually attempts helping his Son bringing upon ruin and destruction to the World, once again for seeing the results of his twisted experiments. In terms of original FF7 charactee presentation, Sephiroth's was executed amazingly. However, in terms of twisted, dark and immoral deeds, Hojo has no rivals.

Though man this was a good video. Honestly Ultimecia (8) and Ultima (Tactics) do stand out for me when I was kid. Ultima made me think of religious people willing worship an evil deity and got me to question religion. Though Ultimecia reminds me of how mutants were treated in xmen knowing many sorceresses were feared and hated iirc. Till of course Adell and Ultimecia decided that they had enough of this abuse pretty much and payback.

Based on the original FFVII, Sephiroth wouldn't even make it into my top 10 list, as the original game never clarifies who is in control: He or Jenova. And based on all the FFVII-stuff that came afterwards, I'd exclude him from any list entirely, as he is just that constantly smug-face-wearing edgelord with no personality.

If ff villain rank by power,i think bhunivelze are the most powerfull being in entire ff games, if ultimecia can control time than bhunivelze can create entire new universe,sepiroth supernova pale in comparison with bhunivelze hypernova,the cycle of life and death yu yevon have is inferior with bhunivelze immortality even in the game bhunivelze cannot be defeated and the mc seal it in dark dimmension. The downside is you can defeat bhunivelze in 5 minutes
