Rob Hillman right. I sympathize with people who want a 1:1 remake regarding the story, especially since this game is called “remake.” But I do think the game strikes a great balance in remaking what we loved about FF7 and adding a new layer to the story. That’s very exciting for me because now I can expect to experience both old and new adventures with the characters I love.

@@erieplays8367 I'm curious to know how many of the angry people on the internet out there actually stopped playing the game, or will follow through and not buy the next part of the game based on the ending, or anything else one might dislike. That's a valid choice, of course. I sincerely feel badly for anyone who genuinely has lost the desire to keep playing these games because the new additions to storyline are dealbreakers for them. That being said, I speculate most very vocal and negative people will keep on buying, playing and complaining. That's the behavior that makes me scratch my head. Why? People keep saying it, and outside of the story it is a very likely goal of the creators, but in universe, how killing Aerith was Sepiroth's mistake? Once he killed her and blocked her passage to the livestream he was invincible and only Shinra's intervention stopped him when they destroyed the shield around the north crater. So if all those speculations about Remake Sepiroth being from the future are true, I really think that for him not to kill Aerith is very stupid. were I was in his place, my first priority would be to destroy Midgar and /or kill Cloud and all of his party, Aerith included. Even better, kill Aerith before she starts activating Holy. Instant win.

If it were a 1:1 remake we would only be talking about the graphics and the combat and maybe some of the back stories. With this new layer they've added we have tons to theorize about which is incredibly exciting. Yea they could eff it all up and turn it into star wars or the last of us, but I don't think they will do that. I think they are aware that royally screwing up ff7 will be the end of their company. I do have a friend by the way who already feels that way about this first part. He even tried to return the game, but couldn't because of the pandemic. I personally loved the game, and was feeling that anxiety during the ending sequences but have been quite excited since. Cheers dudes. I posted a few videos discussing some stuff as well if anyone is interested.

I agree with your assessement of the whispers but I do believe they are a metaphor. Maybe not a reflection of antagonized legacy players but rather an acknowledgement of the expectation that the remake would stay canon. And metaphorically saying that this remake could break that expectation. Which to me is genius because in a way, they can still allow the canon ff7 events to play out while still keeping us on our toes. As oppossed to letting us keep our expectations and when needing to keep things fresh they heavily change the story and upset many fans. This is a genius way of having their cake and eating it too. I call it the Star Trek strategy. Also, as much as I love the 7 seconds bit relating to the 7 seconds Sephiroth takes to drop and kill Aerith, the ff7 remake chapter 18 synopsis says the 7 seconds is when Sephiroth dropped the meteor.

1:51 Correction(I haven't watched the full video so if you mention it lately then I apologize), but neither Leslie nor Kyrie are new to the lore. They were both introduced in the "The Kids are Alright" novel The fact that they introduced stuff from the Compilation into the parts of the original story is pretty cool to me, and it's really what I was hoping the Remake would be Not a completely new thing that expects you to have played the original despite acting like a proper Recreation, but a faithful remake of the original story that mixes in stuff from the expanded universe to try and make the original game fit in more with subsequent titles. Some along the lines of what the Yakuza 1 and 2 remakes do, where they take the original game and add elements from newer titles to try and make the overall saga feel more connected

I agree with you that this game is best viewed as a sequel. Sephiroth having clear knowledge of future events makes the events of ff7 canon within this story. This narrative is made stronger when viewed as a sequel. The main issue I have is that it ultimately cheapens the events of the original game. If this is a sequel, that means whispers must exist within the events of the original as well, meaning that cloud only wins in ff7 and AC, because he was 'fated' to do so. This ultimately hurts his character portrayal in the original even more because everything about his character and personality was seemingly designed to counter the idea that he was a fated hero

It seems that the devs didn't think they could get away with not showing Seph. Everyone knows who he is at this point. He's not hidden, and from a strictly money-making standpoint, he's someone they need to cash in on. Truly if they wanted to nail his similar presence, they would have had to gone 1:1 and had him show up in all his glory towards the end of the game killing the President, which would have been awesome (of course controlling Jenova). In the one interviews Seph is supposed to be like the shark in the movie Jaws, but they couldn't really pull this off anymore because he's known now, so they changed it. To me, I think it's lame, but that was their rational. A lot of it doesn't seem to make sense though unless like you said, consider this as a sequel. The whispers are also... they just seem lazy, don't they? Just being able to write in literal fate ghosts that decides things? Like there isn't any other way they could have done this? It would be nice to hear your analysis, but also what you immediately liked and disliked, and even gameplay goods/bads. I obviously enjoyed the game myself, but there's so much to talk about in this game. Someone asked me if if it was bad or good and I told them it was so much more complicated than that. Plus isn't the Ultimania supposed to drop in 3 days?

I know someone who played this without having played or known much about the OG besides "Cloud is the guy with the big sword" Sure, they couldn't pull the reveal off like they did in '97, but there's still plenty of people who are ignorant about the original game enough to be affected by proper buildup

I'd tend more to your friend's opinion, I think. I wasn't massively invested in the remake, yet I also wasn't too bothered by the prospect of changing some aspects of the story and plot, within reason. So I don't really think I'm a big purist. The original game will always be there, and nothing's going to change that. Yet I'm very wary about where they specifically appear to be taking this. I think the thing which I found most concerning is how leaden the whole destiny theme was, to the exclusion of the original game's themes and emotional content. At times when you should be focusing on the characterisation, or some kind of story development, you're totally trying to figure out why spectral arbiters of fate are trying to keep the timeline intact. I'm pretty surprised at how some people seem to be okay with the partial or total abandonment of the original game's themes. The whole theme of loss has been basically thrown out of the window, with the survival of the sector seven residents and the survival of multiple members of Avalanche. All emotional power from the plate falling is gone. Oh, and Zack is, in some weird alternate timeline form, back, baby. Which is pretty gratuitous. Probably the best thing about Crisis Core is Zack's character arc and ending. Being a hero wasn't about being a self-entitled, pompous, murdering bastard like Genesis, it was about being a fugitive with no status and the simple act of being willing to die for the guy next to you, which is probably the most basic and universal motivation for a solider or anyone who fights. Not prestige, just friendship. Yes, time-travel, alternate timelines, and the like is very 'clever'. It can also be massively and unfeasibly complex, obfuscating, and, well, I'm sounding like a broken record here, but something which completely blots out a good story. Another commenter stole my thunder on this point but I get this horrible feeling the people in charge of this don't understand the difference between plot and story. It seems like it's going in a very plot-heavy direction. The story is going to be about the plot, and focused on the kind of stuff I've seen so far in terms of fan theorising. Is it Kadaj, Loz etc. I... don't really care to be honest. I care about a story drawing out my emotions, not teasing my brain as to whether Sephiroth from the future has got his hands on a tardis. But these are just my concerns about what they appear to be signalling to us. I don't know what they'll do in the future. I could be proven wrong. I hope I am. But I am cautious about what they'll do now they've apparently liberated themselves from the established continuity, which seems like it's what people actually liked most about this game.
@AlleywayJack
@AlleywayJack 4 жыл бұрын
I agree to a large extent about the characterisation potentially being hindered by the new plot points down the line, and during my playthrough I was particularly concerned about Cloud's hallucinations featuring Sephiroth so extensively rather than being weird and ambiguous allusions that contribute to his later reveal as imposter SOLDIER dude. I think the sequel angle can be looked at both ways, because on the one hand, as returning players we already know Cloud in this respect and had his character-arc established... on the other hand, I agree that the renewed direction could dilute or cheapen certain reveals and emotional developments. For example, Sephiroth is telling him a lot of stuff about himself already, so currently I can't see how Tifa's role would come to fruition, where she attempts to tell him who he is, delve into his sub-conscious etc. It does have the potential to go horribly, but based on this first game, I can't make the call. Also agree about Zack. I was actually happy having him this tragic peripheral NPC that contributed to Cloud's story in the original, but since they did Crisis Core anyway, I played it and felt it was a pretty emotional and weighty build up to his tragic demise. I don't think he should be brought back, or Aerith for that matter... it renders the impact of the CC ending pointless.
@anthroposmetron4475

It's interesting, because I've seen people praise the Remake for not being beholden to the established fans, and the Whispers seem like a meta-commentary on that, but it seems like in a lot of places they're relying on a familiarity with the original and seem to be hinting towards fan service. The injection of Zack is part of this, as is the constant use of Sephiroth, in comparison to his very sparing, and much more dramatic impact in the original. Which touches on the elephant in the living room nobody wants to discuss, which is whether they're looking at keeping Aerith alive. I agree that would be an enormous mistake. To go meta myself, I wonder how or if they're going to change things now from their original intention as a result of reaction to the ending. That could create a mess. As you say, we'll only be able to take a complete view once the future games are released, but as things stand I'm happy I went with my instincts not to get too involved in the Remake anticipation.

I really do hope it is revealed this is a sequel because really, technically, Jenova won, by the end of Dirge of Cerberus, really, it would make a lot of sense to have "Remake" literally mean, Sephiroth and Aerith are trying to alter the fate of the planet(or to fix the death that foiled his plan in Sephiroth's case). And I mean, either way, Aerith MUST die, unless they change something major, sequel or not, if she doesn't die then the meteor will hit because there is no other Cetra right? I think people are jumping the gun getting so up in arms, they are not going to go through all this with their most popular title and not know where the story is headed. I don't believe that for a second.

Tetsuya Nomura loves inserting crazy open ended things to make the audience discuss and debate. Also remember how nojima made it seem like tidus and yuna were arguing and that yuna may have caught tidus flirting with another girl. All things to stir up the fanbase and start speculation. Without wishing to spoil anything for you, there's strong dialogue indications from two key characters that they're aware the fabric of reality has changed, and a cutscene shows a big change in the canonical events. @@InfinityNexusReviews No probs.... Spoilers ahead: At several intervals of the game the party is harassed by apparitions called 'whispers'. Towards the end of the game RedXIII and Aerith reveal that these 'whispers' are manifestations of fate, and seem to be trying to maintain a pre-determined set of events (aka the events of FF7 proper). At the end of the game the party steps into some parallel universe void on the Midgar bridge, fights and destroys a big-boss whisper in a penultimate boss battle (hinting that fate has been forever altered), and there's a flashback of Zack Fair surviving the Shinra onslaught and walking off into the sunset with Cloud.... at this stage it's not clear how much of this is the whispers or Sephiroth's influence, but after a 1v1 boss battle between Sephiroth and Cloud at the end of the game, Sephiroth pretty much outrightly states that he has knowledge of the future and that Cloud has a very fleeting opportunity to change things for good or ill. This has created all manner of speculation about whether Aerith will survive etc etc... but it's certainly a different setup compared to the original.

@@AlleywayJack very interesting, thanks for that. I wonder how people will take the other two episodes if they know it's a sequel when they wanted a remake. Perhaps remake refers to remaking reality? If this IS an alternate reality thing created by Sephiroth then it must take place either after 7 and before AC when he was dead, so that cant be it, or after AC, and presumably when he was defeated at the end of that he joined the life force. Maybe this ties into the "I will never be a memory thing" because he was already planning at that point to change history. Who knows. @@InfinityNexusReviews Yes, and the PS5 is launching in a few months so better to wait and see how they plan to release the game and subsequent instalments across the next-gen consoles/PC. I agree that the Remake refers to Sephiroth remaking reality and I think it's a bit crafty the way they marketed the game. And it's still not clear whether Sephiroth has travelled back in time somehow, or whether he has forewarning of the future, so the implications on AC aren't clear either. Nor is it clear whether, if he has travelled back in time, that means there's two Sephiroths, future Sephiroth and Nothern Crater Sephiroth... many questions, and not many answers at this point.

It's such a massive distraction. By making the story about ff7 itself and multiverses they're just making the story about plot beats and which unimportant details will be switched around between this remake and the original. Its all done at the expense of telling the actual story of the game --I'm sorry that is not genius in anyway way. It's a gimmick. The plot is supposed to support the story, not be the actual source of intrique.

This comment. Big ups. FFVII is a story about loss. FFVIIR is a story about FFVII. There's nothing inherently clever about meta commentary. It's a tool which is only as effective as it's application and it's user.

Everyone loves Tetsuya Nomura now so this is only going to be more of a train wreck. The personal story of Cloud and his friends saving the world from an Neo eldritch sci fi threat has been cancelled so ff7 fanfiction could be made cannon

When was FF7 ever about alternate timelines, killing the gods of destiny, and time traveling handsome guy Sephiroth? Never, but this game 100% is.

Yes it's a sequel. No humans survived ff7. Developers said so. FF7 ends with Aerith looking at screen (97 graphics), FF7R behind with Aerith looking at screen, continuing the story. FF7R Aerith sees events to come from her future self, or transfers herself to past. Eitherway she alrdy knows Cloud or of him. And she goes specifically to wait for him, unlike in the original ff7 where she randomly walked into him and can disregard him through available choices, said choices are not available in the sequel, FF7R. And thus FF7R begins. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZ6nemOXqMiKmsU

@@Andy-qr3hu at end of the day they're imaginary characters and developers decide what to do with them. If Zack is back and didnt actually die & it was his dog who was genetically modified to look like him, then it is what it is. I know everyone is hurt but they're just stick figures with some writing attached to them and ppl obsess over them, I know. But with anything, im just like meh, what can you do. Make your own characters and stories. Or get on the team. Or be Nomuras' best friend and beg him to do what you want with the characters.

This Remake has nothing to do with actual time. If it has it has 100 plotholes and they would ignore the actually good remake/sequel elements they set up 18 years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKW2eYx4jZ6IfM0

Well I've seen so many saying that it is in fact NOT Sephiroth but it's actually Jenova taking Sephiroth's likeness. I didn't really like the remake at all........................... I didn't like Avenger's Endgame EITHER ! The ONLY change I'd like is the fact that ZACK could LIVE ! OF course that VA is AWFUL just like Sephiroth's new VA is AWFUL, the only new ones I kind of sorta like are Barret's and Aerith's VA's!

It is Jenova taking Sephiroth's likeness in the original game too, Sephiroth is wrapped in ice in the Northern crater for 70% of the story. And I agree, some of the VA I did not like.

Turning Final Fantasy VII into Marvel movie is the worst thing they could have done with this game. This is a game about death and consequences and if everyone is alive it becomes really lame. Aside from bigs and wedge (and possibly Jessie), the fact that all the sector 7 people you interact with during the game also survive doesn't bode well for this major theme, and moreover, is a huge wasted opportunity (they made us interact with them much more than in the original, and killing them off could have been twice as impactful). I don't share your optimism for the next game, because I think the time travel aspects of the new game are lame, unoriginal, and terribly done. This game is at its best when it sticks and expands the source material, but everything goes downhill every time they try to change something major. The dialogue quality is worse, the action becomes ridiculous (and when the action is too ridiculous for Final Fantasy that's saying something) and they try to impress us with big spectacles instead of good storytelling. I honestly don't get it.. Why remake the game if you don't want to?
