I've come to the conclusion after many years of doing this and getting this great info from Jeff that he so graciously shares with us all ,is keep it basic I've improved my property but just maintains the natural browse ,and planting basic plots of ,annual clover that will be later disced under for nitrogen for my brassicas ,rye and a few acres of corn and I've had great success ,good deer hunting well into new York's long gun season and many trophy bucks on the wall . Good sound harvest practices and a little sweat equity and you can improve your property without huge financial invesents ,,thanks again Jeff as always great useful info.

Awesome video Jeff. New food plotter, really learning about lime. Wondering, between ag/pelletized/liquid lime, is one better than the other or will they all do the trick? Looking to add lime to two 1/2 acre plots. Thanks!

Pelletized lime is just powdered lime smashed into a pellet form that breaks apart when wet.

Agreed! Deer have plent of summer time food. I also agree that no-till is the best way to build good food plots and save a lot of money in the long run. So I suggest the following motto for all of us food plotters: "In the summer we feed the soil, in the fall we feed the deer".

Great content Jeff. Lime is the key and probably the most important factor in planting. We have struggled a couple years adjusting ph and will really push the lime heavier this year. Our plots run 5.4 to 6.1. We find it’s a long term project to get sufficient lime down in remote areas. We use pelletized lime as it’s easier to get it in our remote areas. Again thanks and stay safe.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions97514 ай бұрын
If you need to reduce herd #s you do that by getting rid of summer food before any other tactic, first. If you want to raise deer numbers you do that by adding summer food so that you build a summer doe fawning range, first. Really easy step either way...

The soil size isn't how the lime reacts, it's related to the CEC (cation exchange capacity) of the soil, sand is very low, organic soil is very high. Also, sand isn't a small soil particle, it's the largest of all soil particles, clay is the finest.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97513 жыл бұрын
Clay is bound together so you have to disc it up and break it up...which is why it takes longer for lime to react in clay. Why it reacts faster in lite soil...in lite soil particles aren't bound. So lime can react faster in lite soil. Always make sure to disc and till lime into clay...
