“New Moon on Monday” is one of my favorite Duran Duran songs. It’s not only a very fun song to listen to, it’s monstrously played and also very harmonically complex. They’re incredibly underrated as musicians due to the New Romantic “boy band” type looks, which I think is fine. They can be our 40 year old secret.

Great vocals with awesome pre chorus and chorus. John Taylor is such an awesome bass player but for whatever reason doesn't get the credit he deserves. That’s awesome. I still remember listening to a radio interview that Huey did in 1988 about his album “Small World”. Fans were calling in asking the usual questions & then later some guy with a strange voice started asking Huey some crazy questions. It went on for a couple minutes & I could tell Huey was thinking “Who the hell is this guy?” Turned out it was Bruce playing a prank on Huey. They all started laughing their butts off and then kept talking for awhile after that. Btw, Huey sang b/g & played harmonica on “Down the Road Tonight” & then later on “Defenders of the Flag” on his 2nd album. Bruce returned the favor by loaning Huey “Jacobs Ladder” & also playing accordian on “Old Antones”.

New Moon on Monday is my favorite Duran Duran song and definitely one in their superb catalog that deserves more recognition. Simon Le Bon really displays his vocal chops throughout the song. From a low suave Bryan Ferryesque groove in the first half of all the verses, he turns it up in the second half of the verse, and really lets it rip on the chorus. John Taylor is a beast and maybe the under recognized bass player ever. His low end propels so many of their best songs. Great video!

"What about me?" By moving pictures via Australia; should be on everyone's playlist. "Turn back the clock" by Johnny hates jazz as well. Johnny hates jazz is the group that sang "Shattered dreams", which should already be on everybody's playlist.

Duran Duran is all about John Taylor. Check out the DD channel he’s the nicest guy ever and goes over the songs. I couldn’t believe when he said he’d been playing bass less than one or two years when writing many of those grooves.

bcastromusic - I had no idea he'd not been playing bass very long. I've always loved his style, with the driving fast pass, and that popping sound he creates*. Love that, but don't hear many people doing it, strangely *(Sorry, I'm not a musician - don't know the terminology.)
@Redhotlugnut
@Redhotlugnut 4 жыл бұрын
@@hughmoore3251 you used the correct term. It is a 'pop' and the other technique that usually went along with it would be a 'slap' with the side of the thumb. It created a more percussive sound and was definitely very different sounding than someone playing with either a pick (like John used on Planet Earth) or fingers. The technique I think became a bit passe a long time ago for most pop music but when it was used in classic songs that have it, it fits well. I'll add a clip from 2 of the greatest musicians of all time. Steve Gadd on drums and Will Lee (David Letterman show bass player) doing a little groove thing together from an Instructional Drum video of Steve Gadd kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqOQgZiofsd4prs

It is shocking to me to think any of these songs were EVER "forgotten" lol. Overkill was great, but Everything I Need was single by Men At Work that was WAY overlooked to me. Self Control is totally Branigan's greatest piece to me. I thinking the backing vocals of "You take myself, you take my self control" supporting Laura's amazing voice is what makes that songs amazing. Every Little Kiss,awesome! Tender Love is another amazing tracks. The strings that come in after the double "ahhh" harmony towards the end of the song is magical.

"The One You Love" by Glenn Frey! That should definitely be one of the songs you feature. Amazing mellow vocal, great subject, and unforgettable saxophone!!! As far as this episode is concerned, you picked some more GEMS!!! I especially love the Force MD's & Laura Branigan songs. Hasn't "Self Control" ever been featured in a movie? I mean, just listening to the song, it has "MOVIE THEME" written all over it!!!

Again, another great job on your Hidden Gems choices. “Tender Love” is such a classic slow jam. It was John Taylor’s bass playing that attracted me to Duran Duran. As for other hidden gems, a couple came to mind. “State Farm” by Yaz is outstanding and all but forgotten. Another song that everyone should know is “Never Say Never” by Romeo Void. Both of these songs have classic 80’s vibe. You could also say any song by Thomas Dolby that isn’t “She Blinded Me With Science.” I cant even listen to that song anymore. However, “One Of Our Submarines” or “The Flat Earth;” put them on repeat.

"Overkill" was the first single off "Cargo". I remember it getting released before the album came out in April of 83 if I remember right. I was in 7th grade, so dont hold me to the exact day. 😁 My favorite deep cut from MaW is "Down by the Sea". On a different note, another song for these lists should be Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive". "The One Thing" by INXS too

You're right on about "Overkill". There's a depth about the lyrics, that you rarely heard back then on radio. The melody is amazing, the delivery and arrangements are out of this world. It's probably their most timeless song. And thanks for reminding the world of Laura Branigan - gone too soon, and never quite got the recognition she deserved.

My favorite “Men At Work” song is actually not a hit or a single. “Touching The Untouchables”. It’s from their first album. KILLER track. A couple killer deep cuts on their second album are “No Sign of Yesterday” and “No Restrictions”. Both of those first two albums are full of hidden gems. “Still Life” from their third album is another. Do a deep dive on them, you won’t be sorry.

Jimmy Jam never gonna change that look...classic, love it. He and Terry Lewis are musical geniuses. All these songs were great. I know you've already done a video on it, but I've Been In Love Before by Cutting Crew deserves another mention. Such a good song and usually forgotten even though it was a hit.

A bit of trivia I learned about Tender Love recently. An executive from Tommy Boy Records said that it was originally written for New Edition. But, because New Edition had contractual issues with Maurice Starr it went to Force MDs. They did awesome! I'm glad they got the chance to work with Jam and Lewis. Although, it would be great to hear New Edition to have done it. They still can 😉

INXS- “I’m Over You”. An overlooked B-side that is one of their best songs ...and not sung by Michael H U2- “A Celebration”. An early track you never hear with a killer guitar riff B52’s -“Party Out of Bounds”. This one doesn’t get the love of “Rock Lobster” or “Private Idaho” but is just as fun Split Enz- “History Never Repeats”. We all know “I Got You” , but I think this song is even better.. Robert Palmer -“ I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On”... written by hit machine Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis this was originally recorded by Cherelle. Only the James Bond of Rock had the cojones to make a male version and it’s so great.
