#5 Desert Moon by Dennis DeYoung. Dennis formerly of the band Styx released this song as the lead single and title track off of his album by the same name. Styx was just coming off of the massive success of Kilroy Was Here, the concept album that was lead by the #3 hit Mr. Roboto. The album and song carried the creative yet competitive strain within the band to the breaking point, when the supporting tour was over, Tommy Shaw left the band to pursue a solo career, releasing the album Girls with Guns. Dennis DeYoung did the same, releasing Desert Moon, which was supposedly going to be a song for Styx, none the less, the song became the biggest solo hit for any member of Styx going to the top 10 on the hot 100, as well as #7 in Canada #8 in Ireland . Written and produced by Dennis, here’s what he said about the song in a recent zoom session that we did.
#4and #3 We are doing together. Stay the Night by Benjamin Orr and Emotion in Motion by Ric Ocasek the co-lead singers of the band everybody loves, the Cars. As we discussed recently on Professor of Rock, with 1984’s Mutt Lange produced classic Heartbeat City, The Cars had their biggest selling record to date, with MTV staples like You Might Think, Magic and the ballad Drive, which barely missed the top spot. In between albums the group released their greatest hits package in 85 and in 1986 both Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr released solo albums. Let’s start with Ric. He released the album, this Side of Paradise, which he co produced with Ross Collum and Chris Hughes who was fresh off producing Tears for Fears’ massive 85 album Songs from the Big Chair. The Lead single was a dreamy and undeniable pop song called Emotion in Motion. The song was Ric’s only top 40 hit as a solo artist hitting #15 on the Hot 100 as well a #8 on the AC charts and it went all the way to #1 on Album Rock Tracks. Written by Ocasek in my opinion, this song should’ve been a bigger hit. It’s a song that just draws you in with it’s blissful arrangement.
And #1 Foolish Heart by Steve Perry who at the time was the lead singer of legendary band Journey. From Steve’s first solo album Street Talk from 1984. Street Talk went double Platinum and came out at the gates like triple crown racehorse with the undeniable knockout song Oh Sherrie about Perry’s then girlfriend Sherrie Swofford. Oh Sherrie went to #3 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the rock charts and it was even performed a few years later on the Raised on Radio tour with Journey. Two more singles were released from the album She’s Mine and Strung out. The fourth single, Foolish Heart written by Steve and Randy Goodrum though never as heralded as Oh Sherrie, was the one that got me. It was a phenomenal ballad. At times Steve reaches levels that are absolutely gut wrenching.

P.O.R. has a way of reminding me of youth. The 80's were a time of so much diversity in music anything was possible. The goonies, The Breakfast club, MTV, Comic books. Kids could ride their bikes without fear and explore, build club houses. I miss it, and it's shameful that our kids never knew this freedom. As I watch these it takes me back to that 10 year old boy who was curious and inspired by his friendships and wanting to go on a treasure hunt or build a fort, or write a song.

Someday I'd love to see the Professor explore the topic of....Was it better to grow up in the 1970s/1980s or the 2020s..?? I have mixed feelings about it, personally I'm glad I grew up in a time where everyone did not have cell phones, computers, the Internet, etc, etc ......but on the other hand, information is much more easily available now, something we did not have access to back then as much, beyond your local library, and that is certainly convenient.

Ann Wilson is, to me, one the greatest voices of the 80's. I still get chills every time I hear Heart's Alone. Stunningly beautiful woman with an amazing voice!

Yes! Art is all only as good as its perceived. So I don't believe in ranking artists. But Ann does make it difficult not to. Gorgeous woman, voice, and seemed to stay "real" throughout her very long and extremely successful career. I enjoy early Heart more than the later 80s stuff, mainly because their songs were SO HUGE you COULDN'T avoid them on the dial and at the time you couldn't simply pull up something else. But yeah, that voice is one for the ages. If you haven't checked her and sis doing STH for the band themselves at the Kennedy honors you should, just be sure you're in a place you can turn it up. :) Crazy on You, Baracuda and slower ones like Dog n Butterfly are from my favorite time to be a Heart fan

I liked it way more than Street Talk. I saw Steve on that tour in Fort Worth, Texas. It was a great show and he was at his best on the slower songs. He could not do some of the Escape songs like he could in 1981 but all in all it was a great show.

Ric O's "Emotion In Motion" and Ben Orr's "Stay The Night" are indeed far too forgotten these days. Both songs are classics. Good call on the similarity of "Emotion In Motion" to Bread's "Everything I Own"! I have to think Ric was influenced by that song knowingly or not. And "Foolish Heart" is unreal. Perry's vocals are unbeatable as usual. Thanks for helping to keep these great songs alive, Prof. And I love when you share your personal stories connected to these songs. The story of you and your dad re your grandfather's death was really poignant. That's the thing about deep love for music - songs take you back to moments in time the way no other thing can.

The 80's an amazing time. Music meant so much to so many. There was just this feeling with all the music coming out. All the new artists and being so excited about our favorite artists new albums being released. Just an amazing time. I am so lucky to have grown up in that era. I wish kids today had that. Its just not the same. That feeling isn't there with today's music. The excitement. Its just not there. A lot of it I'm sure is just nostalgia but the music from the 80's has stood the test of time. So much of it still used in movies and TV. And our high school football team still uses AC/DC's Hells Bells as their intro music. Love it.

I think it had to do with MTV. Being able to see these artists interpretations of the music, while listening to those same songs on the radio and relating them to your own life. Some of these songs still bring tears to my eyes. Whether it is something painful or something joyous, these songs have made an imprint on my life. Again, I think it's the combo of the video and my own experience that make some of the songs resonate so much.

I agree with you 100%! I feel blessed to have lived my teen years in the 80's. A great decade for music...new music, hair metal(my fave!), techno being introduced, many classic musicals like Footloose.. just overall amazing time. Desert moon makes me feel the nostalgia from that era. Remembering my first love, high school football games, great friends...getting into stuff we weren't supposed to! Lol! If I could take my kids and grandkids and go back to the 80's...I'd break out the Aqua net and spandex 🤣🤣 (might embarass the kiddos but they'd be alright! Haha!)

VIDEO IDEA: I'd love to see a video talking about the weekly 80's 'ritual' of tuning in to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Sunday mornings. I remember often taping songs off the radio just to have the single, and 'cheering' your favorite song on its way up the charts and the suspense of finding out what the new #1 was. I have found that a lot of those Top 40 countdowns from the 80s are uploaded to KZbin on Casey's own channel in their entirety to be enjoyed once again.

Foolish heart was the one on this list that has stayed with me all these years. I was in love with her she was in love with me, but I was out there in the party zone, and she wanted more then I was willing to give. After we break up which was all on me, I realized what a fool I was but it was to late, and Foolish Heart was the one song that was continually being played on radio. Till this day it brings back so many heart wrenching memories.

Being a fan of saxophonist David Sanborn, I bought the soundtrack to Tequila Sunrise. It took almost thirty years to find the CD. Upon listening to it I was surprised and blown away by the Ann Wilson and Robin Zander. The Sanborn track was phenomenal as well.

Great choices. Steve Perry's vocals on Foolish Heart are a strong example of his emulation of Sam Cooke's singing style. It just doesn't get any better. Journey also performed Foolish Heart and Strung Out on the Raised on Radio tour . I'm certain of it as I saw them twice on that tour. On the tour's opening night at the Mountain Aire Festival and again at San Francisco's Cow Palace later in December.

I discovered "Stay The Night" while an intern at an AC station in Minnesota in the mid 1990s. It really captured a piece of my heart and has stayed with me even to today. The song actually inspired a snapshot-fiction piece that got published. Great great song.

I recall that post song Christmas Toast at the end of Steve Perry's song, Foolish Heart. Boy was that a treat and it made me think, at the time, that Journey was still together as a group. “Foolish Heart” is, in by no way, a hidden gem to me!! There are SO many other great tracks on that album (Street Talk). I was gonna list a few of other outstanding songs on the album, but found that I just about listing EVERY TRACK on the album...lol. (It’s that damn good!)

I'd say the only ones who have forgotten these songs are radio program directors and networks. My local so-called '80s station plays the same few dozen songs twice in a 24-hour period every dang day... out of the thousands of songs from that decade. Thank God for iPods!😁 I saw Steve Perry live during his Strange Medicine tour... one of the best concerts I've ever been to.🥰

So glad you included Ric and Ben in this video. The Cars are one of, if not my favorite 80s band of all time. I still remember the first time I heard “Stay The Night”. I was completely smitten. I wouldn’t have thought that about a year after hearing it, and having fallen in love with “The Lace”, that I would own the album on vinyl. When I got it I said I would play it until it wouldn’t play anymore, and I’m listening to it as I type this right now. Love these guys and the music they made. Wish they were here to write more.💔

Foolish Heart is one of my favorite songs. Steve Perry has that amazing ability to tug on your heartstrings, something few vocalists possess. As a vocalist, I think in his prime, no one came close. He IS the voice of my generation. Thanks for the look back.

Street Talk was a great album, and I, like you, thought that Foolish Heart was the unheralded hit on that album. The vocals were pretty stunning which is said often on Perry tracks...but they really were on Foolish Heart. I'd really like to hear you talk about a great Journey song that also doesn't get a lot of discussion but in my opinion absolutely killed it. Not from the 80s, but Journey's Winds Of March off of their Infinity album. Cheers!

Out of all the great songs featured, I'd have to say the hidden gem I enjoy the most is Benjamin Orr's "Stay The Night." I always liked that song, and on the rare occasion the tune got some air-play from my hometown radio station, I'd make an effort to record it on a cassette I'd use as part of a mixed tape. As with all my mixed tapes, all the songs eventually got recorded over with other tunes. It was what it was, I guess. By the way, a very cool pair of blue glasses. Really like them.

Great episode! You just covered Drive by the Cars and now Desert Moon by Dennis Deyoung. Those 2 songs are my favorite of all time! I loved hearing Dennis talk about Desert Moon. It's been 36 years and I still love it. Stay the Night is another all time favorite. RIP ben Orr. Lastly, Steve "The Voice" Perry was great on Street Talk. Oh Sherrie and Foolish Heart are great but the real hidden gem on that album is Go Away. Check it out!

....Prof, you HAVE to be my best Friend, Dude you HAVE to!! ....I love EVERY ONE of these Songs!!..."Desert Moon" (#10 Pop, Fall, '84) is my coming of age Song, "Emotion In Motion" & 'Stay The Night" are my BFF's coming of age Songs (#16 Pop, '86 / #24 Pop, '87)...he even asked to borrow my (very OOP) CD's, to burn the entire Albums! ..."Foolish Heart" (#18 Pop; early '85) is my Soft Rock 'go to' when I've had a breakup, & "Surrender To Me" (#6 Pop, early '89), .....MAN!! I was in College, and had a MASSIVE crush on someone, & played the 45(!) SO much, I had to buy the CD Soundtrack (...VERY OOP, now), to make COPIES, to keep!! ....This post is VERY close to me, because I NOW have a kinship with someone who was JUST LIKE ME, lost in these 'forgotten' nuggets in the 80's, that NOW will be re-introduced, to a new generation that may be influenced to re-generate GOOD MUSIC...I Thank You, Prof, I TRULY DO....

Loved Dennis Deyoung Dessert Moon. I got chills when you quoted the lyrics. One of his best lyrics ever. Stay the Night is one of my absolute favorites!!! Benjamin Orr was an amazing lyricist and musician. Very Special memories with that song. Steve Perry's Street Talk is still one that I keep with me where ever I go.
