Rainbow Trout represent the dominant ice fisheries in the western United States and Canada. These hard fighting fish remain active under the ice and can put up an impressive fight on light ice fishing tackle. In this video I cover my 5, well 6 actually, favorite lures for catching trout under the ice.

Great tips. I was worried about not getting a close up look - particularly at the flies - but at the end you showcased them nicely. I have some of those lures but I bought waayyy too many hooks without trying them and its hard to know which ones to try. I do best with jigs but will explore with the kastmaster and Swedish pimple for sure. I appreciate your sharing what works!

Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, kzbin.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.

The only thing I would add to the list is a small white Mr Twister plastic on a standard lead jig head. They are a somewhat aggressive presentation, good for finding aggressive perch and walleyes that want to chase but I've had countless rainbows gulp those things to the point that I will use it to target rainbows on occasion or as a multi species lure.

Going to target some rainbows this weekend! What do you usually start with? Spoons then downsize to small jigs? What usually does better for you?
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 3 жыл бұрын
I usually go opposite. Start with jigs. If you can't get them to commit try aggressive spoon jigging.

do you find most trout feed high in the water column or just off the lake bed?
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the lake and food resources. However, in general over deep water 20' or more trout tend to suspend high off the bottom and feed in the water column. Near shore or in shallow areas under 10' they tend to associate with the bottom.

I am going for rainbows on a small glacial pothole lake on Saturday. Where I am going the rainbows are stocked. I have tried several times to locate them ice fishing and cannot seem to even see any on the camera. The lake is not very big, it is one of those glacial pothole lakes so it gets pretty deep, almost 70'. Around the whole perimeter it drops off about 10 from the shore except for the back NW corner, there it is a little more gradual.. almost basin like. Would you have any tips on trying to locate these elusive son of a guns??? I do have an aquavu cam and an ibobber so i got the electronics.. any tips are appreciated! much love brother!

Generally trout will be feeding in the upper 20' of the water column in my experience. Shallow basins are more likely to hold fish than out over the deepest part of the lake.

Where are the trout hanging out? Closer to the bottom?
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the lake. However, I generally find trout feeding nearer the bottom rather than suspended off the bottom. I try to focus on areas with weeds as that generally means lots of bug life (as you can see in the video). In these areas they generally patrol the bottom.
