I've been told that the more you know the less you think you know. I guess that means you know enough to know there is so much more. It is the ones who think they know it all that actually know very little. So it sounds to me like you are probably doing pretty good. That's without hearing you play but it is an indication.

I am a beginner and may always be stuck in beginner mode. I know lots of chords and can do quick chord changes, lift-offs and hammer-ons, various strum patterns including muting (love to mute), but finger picking remains a challenge. I seem to be clumsy or just lack patience. It’s like boating….power boats versus sailing. Power boat people love the thrill of speed and reaching a destination quickly. Sailing people love the thinking element, the art of controlling direction with subtle adjustments of the sails with the ever changing wind. Far more patient. Hence, I am a power boater.

With finger picking, one thing that helps is try to put the finger on the string that finger will be playing and keep them there close so there will be minimal movement. Finger picking was hard at first but I actually picked it up fairly quickly. It's really not as hard as it seems at first and once u get it, it's really fun to play finger style. Hybrid picking is really fun too. Fade to black is a good song to dip ur toe into the hybrid picking pool as it's not too fast.

@@chucklutter2509 It starts out in D minor (which is F major). The riff follows D minor pentatonic when they play it down the next. The chorus is in D minor. The verses in C sharp minor (Key of E). That should make it easier to follow.
@GaryBook2 жыл бұрын
@@chucklutter2509 Break it down into two parts, the opening in D minor where you do the riff by the neck, then walk up and down on the chords. Then you riff again in the 10 fret on high strings using D minor pentatonic scale. Second part: Then you switch to the verse in C# minor (which is key of E). The thing that makes it challenging is there are many parts and chords. Just break it down into small parts and understand the music theory for D minor & D minor pentatonic and C# minor. Then you practice and blow away your friends!!!

I’d phrase it slightly differently I think, especially as someone edging towards intermediate... Theory plays a massive part for me and knowing what you are playing has to be part of the discussion. Advanced players know what they are playing, can play over changes, picking out target notes using key centres and chord functions. Maybe Intermediates are starting to get some broad knowledge around some theory but it’s more about playing songs and them sounding correct. Beginner is about getting your hands to move, keeping time/tempo and getting the right strings to ring out. There’s always another level to strive for. Guitar is 🔥🔥🔥

I can play these songs fairly easily - not perfect but only took a minute or 2 to get the gist of each...there is no way I'm an "intermediate" guitar player though. Advanced beginner perhaps but yeah, these are fun campfire type songs in my opinion and I'm going to use them as nice finger stretcher/familiar tune to strum for other people and as a base track on my looper to noodle around on. I really love to try and figure out the vocal melody as a lead line for guitar because I haven't sung since 2006 when I was in a band. Thanks for the inspiration!
@ReadyMindsetGo11 ай бұрын
Ofc this is also dependent on what style(s)/technique(s) you're aiming to develop (best is a wide variety of course!). I've been playing for 20 years, but I've never tried these songs. I've mostly focused on metal music in my earlier years, last year I was learning more funk, now I'm more interested in 'classic rock' and grunge like things, as well as Hendrix style playing. I'm sure I could play these songs with a bit of practice but not as quickly as something I'm more familiar with. In a way maybe that makes me a beginner player within this style/set of techniques.
@madcowusa42772 жыл бұрын
Still a beginner after nearly 3 years, but somewhat approaching beginning intermediate. Practice about 1.5 to 2 hours a day when I am home, which is 3 days a week. I think about the guitar and what I'm going to work on the long drives home and purposely leave my guitar at home for the reward.

As a relative beginner I've gotten a good way into Doc Watson's version of Deep River Blues. It's done amazing things for my finger coordination, strength and calluses. I've been using 3 fingers on the right hand rather than Doc's use of one finger, I'm doing it that way to help train the other fingers up a bit. That song is a big confidence builder as you move through each section, and it's fun!

How crazy, I started about 2 years ago ish, and the first lesson I watched was his seven day course I think. He said “10 minutes a day to become a guitarist” lol, and I can say for certain yea right. I’ve put all my free time into the guitar, probably at the minimum of 10 hours a week, probably closer to 18-20 (and that’s not joking, I go into a vortex and play for hours) and here I’am realizing I already knew all the songs for intermediate. I however don’t feel like I’m intermediate yet lol, this bar non is my most difficult undertaking, and as a recovering addict with a very addictive personality this is basically my new drug.
