What's up cuzins!!??
In this video I venture out to Home Depot and Lowe's to do in store walk throughs in search of my personal TOP 5 JON BOAT BUILD MATERIALS. These are items I have confidence in, used in my #topgunjonboat build, and are also specific to my style of building (wood framing, ect.) I honestly could have made a Top 50 video but due to content and time constraints I will keep it simple and limit it to 5 materials. Obviously you will need a lot more than what is in this video series to complete a full jon boat build. I feel the items mentioned are a great starting point for anyone interested in beginning a boat build.
After my introduction in this PART 1 video I walk the aisles of Home Depot and Lowes. I show you the products I have selected and give you my product knowledge of said materials.
After each product category, I will do a demo of the product in my boat and how I implemented it in the build process.
Again, not an expert, just a serious hobbyist trying to pass on my journey of creative expression and fabrication in my jon boat build.

As always, may your Tiny Boat Builds be great and thanks for watching!

Greetings and Thanks for the Awesome videos! Can I use Cardboard soaked in resin and fiberglass (inter-locked and laid out strategically perhaps grid style or something) for the support/frame system instead of wood for an even lighter finish weight? What do you think about that? Most importantly, how much total weight did the modified decking (including, hatches, switches, screws, carpeting, etc.) did this add to the boat? What was the total cost?

I bass fish on a 163 acre lake that allows only electric motors. And my 18 1/2 bass boat gets blown all over by the ever present wind. I think an 18’ Jon boat with a modified V Hull would do the trick. I want three inline pedestal seats, your DIY build is the first I’ve seen like that. Except I would need more battery storage for a 12/24 trolling motor.

Where I live our home Depot acts as if they have never heard of Western red, can I use spruce pine for 2x2 framing long as it is properly coated with paint or should I order Western red and wait?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 4 жыл бұрын
Man it just depends on how serious you wanna get. The red is less dense than pine therefore lighter. It could save you a couple pounds through a whole build. But yeah, any wood is fine so long as you seal it properly!

Paint it with a good high gloss oil based enamel or exterior varathane and you'll be golden. Possibly even better than a poorly sealed cedar and cheaper to boot. Two coats min.....three is better

I’m worried about overloading my Jon boat. About how much weight do you think you added to the hull when building this?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 4 жыл бұрын
200 pds. All framed in 2x2 western red Cedar which is ultra light per linear ft, closed cell foam, and 15/32 plywood. I was incredibly weight conscious in this build. Out of the weight added, a majority of it is from the batteries which weigh roughly 100+pds

Do you know or have a idea of how much weight you added? Trying to figure out what I need to stay around weight wise.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
I like to think the weight I've added to the boat (all framing, decking, batteries), foam) would be equivalent to me taking my really overweight buddy out in the boat. So I know the batteries are 63 pds each times two. I'd think all framing and decking is around 200 pds give or take. Worst case I'm under 500 best case right at 300. Or maybe I'm just too optimistic with how lightweight my materials and techniques were. I did the build with weight heavily under consideration though.

I would love to do this but I have one question, what happens when it rains and where would the water go ?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
Same place it goes if there is no modifications at all. Bottom of the boat to the water channels which gravity takes effect to direct it to the rear of the boat where I have a bilge pump. The entire build is planned around the fact water will get in the boat at some point hence, sealing all wood, using stainless screws, allowing spots within fabrication to allow water to channel, ect. No different than a real bass boat I guess. I have a modified 1100 gallons per hour bilge pump to ensure whether a leak or act of God doesnt sink the boat hopefully.

If I’m screwing plywood to the aluminum seat what is the best stew to use that won’t strip out of the aluminum bench seat
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
Idk about the best but where I attached things to aluminum I used stainless sheet metal screws. Only thing is to make sure to drill a pilot hole barely smaller than the screw thread diameter to the screen go in tightly and still grab metal without stripping. Again, that's just what I did,I had limited screws into metal in my boat.

Hey man sorry if I missed it, but what screws did you use to drill in the boat with? Or what do you recommend
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
If your drilling through the hull or ribs any bit that is rated for aluminum should work. I personally use a variety of bits from different companies but I've used the Black Oxide series from dewalt a bunch. They work good and are affordable. I usually start small, like 1/16 or 1/8 then work my way up through the bits to the diameter the hole I need. I actually buy a bunch of 1/16 separately because I use them a lot for pilot holes so I'm always breaking them or burning them up. Hope this helps some.

Do you have any info on how to add the proper insulation to the boat , where do you add it and what type of material do you use and how to you attach it? Many people do boat builds and talks bout material but it doesn’t seem like anyone goes over what type of material they use to add buoyancy to the boat after adding all that weight with the wood framing decking etc,,,,, any insight would be be greatly appreciated
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 4 жыл бұрын
Plenty of videos on foam. Fireant Fishing has one on his channel with over a quarter million views. Tbnation has a bunch on his channel, even talks about pour foam. I was past the foam stage when I started my channel. You talk about weight added, I only added 200pds total and that was with batteries. I used western red cedar which is incredibly light and 2x2s at that, only added a few pds. I used 15/32 plywood, again minimal weight. The biggest thing was the batteries which added 100pds. Anyhow, the insulation I added is just something to help dampen vibration and noise, add rigidity under the floor, and of course help the boat float longer if it takes on water.

Home depot has great tools. Lowes has kobalt which is good. Every time I go to Lowe's to do a project, I shop and have a cart full of stuff but get to the end of my list and they're out of the stuff I need. I try to find alternative ways to complete the project but end up having to purchase and piece together 6, 8, 10 pieces and $20,30,40 more and end up saying screw it and leaving a full buggy in the aisle and going to home Depot.

Why weight your boat down with lumber, put every bit of the lumber you normally use on a scale and see how much weight it is, I go with all aluminum framing and 1/16" aluminum sheets and yes the sheet is expensive and it's cheaper to get the 4'×8' which is $98 more or less
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 2 жыл бұрын
That's great. Your a bit late to the party as this video is YEARS old. I now build all my boats out of aluminum. But not because it is lighter. Because it lasts longer and I can guarantee it will not get damaged by water for my customers boat projects. That's right, years after this video I now build boats professionally. Guess what I learned? Aluminum is not lighter. Yes, 1/16 angled aluminum is lighter than a 2x4 but I framed my boat out of 2x2 (1.75x1.75) custom ripped western red cedar. Feather lite. For aluminum decking, you should be using .090. At least .080. This is pound for pound as heavy as wood sheet of 1/2 plywood. Funny enough, I used 11/32 plywood in my first build, making it lighter than an aluminum one. Weigh it? I did .On camera. My entire rear deck framing system in the 1436 weighed less that 6 pounds. I recently built a 1232 and the cockpit floor system alone out of aluminum weighed close to 40 pounds including sheeting, hat channel, and angled. That's pretty heavy. Big misconception about aluminum being lighter. Not if it's compared to cedar and thinner plywood. Anyhow, it's obvious you haven't watched any of my other 50 plus videos on my channel, including my most recent ones where I have videos on how to deck in aluminum, how to frame in aluminum, aluminum floor system, or the past 4 step by step builds all in done in aluminum.

Yes, My most recent video, WOOD FRAMING, features it. You can use whatever plywood you like, i prefer to save weight. Marine ply is incredibly heavy and could put your build very heavy and inefficient , i fish electric only reservoirs where every pound matters and effects the boats performance and top speed.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats It's "heavy" because it is dense which translates to strong which requires less of it to accomplish the same structural strength so instead of using 1/2" cdx you could get by with 3/8 marine grade and still have a stronger flor than the thicker less compatable cdx. buy once cry once

Holy crap guys....DON"T buy big box lumber go to a proper lumber yard and pay less and get better quality lumber. DON'T buy rough sawn lumber. It's like buying a sponge. How can you seal it? You can't. You don't need knotty thick lumber, you need flat smooth clear lumber that has more strength in less weight. That's what you get in clear straight grained lumber. You won't find that at home depot.
