The fortress of solitude was challenging but ultimately so very amazing .One of the most memorable books that I've read.

I find this kind of video a lot of fun to watch and informative. I'm now off to read my first Lethem. Thank you!

A good topic for a Bookchemist video. There seems to be mismatch between what books you talk on and the subtitles.

Wow, your description of 2016 was honestly spot on.

I have an idea, writing a book like a mosaic painting, a bunch of vignettes, that in the end create a whole picture; akin to Naked Lunch. I think that's good idea, a fun one

Lethem does what 99% of contemporary fiction writers don't manage, he creates truly original work. Fantastically smart and entertaining.

Which Lethem book did you say was the most like Pynchon? I can't find where you said it.

I honestly can't remember (sorry!), but Chronic City is fairly pynchonian, and very much a companion novel to Pynchon's own Bleeding Edge (or vice versa, since Chronic City came out first). The co-protagonist Perkus Tooth could even be read as a stand-in for Pynchon - or at least for the cartoonish image of Pynchon we all know from popular culture! Amnesia Moon is also very trippy and free-flowing in a vaguely pynchonian way.

Maybe I meant Michael Chabon, lol. Apparently a lot of people mix them up.

I've yet to read any of Lethem's works (def plan to in the future) but in reading about him I noticed that none of them have a very high rating on Goodreads. I wonder why this is. Is he a particularly polarizing writer?

ok but who won, the tyrannosaurus or the batmobile?

Chronic City 1st, Motherless Brooklyn 2nd, The Blot 3rd, Dissident Gdns 4th, Gun With Occasional Music 5th, Feral Detective 6th. I wasn't able to get through Fortress Of Solitude. I will pick up some of his earlier scifi on your recommendation.

Why that insatiable urge of all you booktubers to produce those rankings (the top 5, the best of 10 etc.)? What's the point of this? Don't you agree that these lists are e.g. constantly changing throughout life and are highly individual? That's not to say I didn't enjoy your review of Lethem's books.

I was just wondering what Lethem I should read next. I have FoS and Gun With OM. This video is good timing

I haven't read most of his books, because every time I set myself to it, I just end up rereading Chronic City. it's my favourite book (thanks to you for that), and yet I wouldn't recommend it to anyone I know
