Going down to what I expect to be 30Hz +-3db with minimal roll off, I doubt if one needs a Sub. Not much music at 30Hz not alone lower, let's say 20Hz other than record rumble, although some huge pipe organs can go down that low.

What a nice job Jay. The vintage speaker from the later 70’s I remember most was the Cizek Model 1. A 10” two way Acoustic suspension, crossover at 1500hz with a flat impedance curve and a Q of .6 or 1 and a foam covered front baffle for defraction. Set up like the KLH 5 with the Q at .6 the bass was exactly as you describe the benefits of Ac Sus. Roy Cizek a blind golden eared designer who worked for the East Coast AC speaker companies previously developed these. Pair them with an Onkyo A10 integrated.

The alternative rec to the LS50 Meta is the KEF Q350, the sound of which I preferred very much anyway; less clinicla, more acoustic. And the scaling aspect is there, too - the more quality you put into them, the more they keep giving you.

I heard a model 5 and concluded that acoustic suspension was the way to go. I ended up buying an old set of Advents for $50, spent another $50 on new crossover caps and a reform kit. I didn't get to test side by side with the model 5 , but the Advent has every bit of the acoustic suspension I was hoping for.

In 1980 I bought a big pair of Pro-9 TL transmission line speakers (Falcon crossovers, Kef B139 bass, Peerless midrange and mine had Elac metal-dome tweeters). I let them go about 15 years ago. Fortunately they now belong to a good friend, so I still get to hear them regularly. Would buy similar again if my budget didn't stretch to Lowthers. I would not swap them for my Lowther horns but I would really miss them if I didn't get to visit...

I had the Totem Tribe Towers and loved them for some time. They we're my entry into tower speakers as my space is limited and had mostly standmounts prior. The TTT are everything you stated with their tonality and soundstage width and overall sound. I've always paired them with a sub as they definitely need them. What was lacking for me is the visceral mid bass punch. The punch to the chest sensation that you get with percussions such as the kick drums. I find that most speakers are not designed to make the bass to mid balance especially good to give a realistic impression of percussions. Many speakers are overdamped through the bass meaning you hear more of the harmonics instead of the fundamental tones, so you have to turn the speaker up loud for it to sound natural. Fast forward to my current speakers are the Borresen X2s which you have and reviewed. Still breaking them in but already the Tribes pale in comparison in this area and completely blow the Totems away at least with my setup and my room. The X2s are considerably larger but the slim design is what made them fit in my room and have given me that bass authority that I was looking for but also excels beyond in the overall frequency range from the airy detailed highs to the fastest bass I've ever heard. Price wise the TTT and X2s are relatively close.

Transpuls 1500's speakers by Magnat cost me $1,000 dollars for the pair. I'm thinking there's a reason why these speakers are no longer available. They sound too good for the money and this disrupts the speaker market! Those Klippel tuned 15" paper woofers make think these other speaker guys are just effing around with tricks and gimmicks! It makes me wonder what Magnat could do to the Transpuls with another $2,000 dollars of engineering, components, and tweaks added to the price.

Got my JBL studio 580 in front, each sitting on it's matching studio 550 sub. (Only being used as stands to get the speaker over my bed because I don't need extra bass) and elac ub5 on the sides, power with a denon, eq'ed by Audyssey. Took running eq about 100 times, and towing speakers but I finally got it where I like it. I'm happy with this arrangement in my bedroom. Feel -90% to upgrade. When you are liking most of your music more than you usually ever have you know you've got the right speaker for yourself. When I look at speakers I'm only curious now but I enjoy the JBL concert, bass heavy, but clean sound (lucky me). This is the first set up, and I've had probably 10 different ones, where I've got to listen to the music rather than critiquing the speakers. They aren't really the best at anything I would imagine but do everything well enough. Highs aren't the most extended or clean but it works. Detail retrieval isn't pointing out every breathe but nothing ever seems to be lacking. Imaging happens sometimes that a sound comes from somewhere else it's seems but mostly it's just filling the room with music I can actually hear all the instruments. Mid-range, though sometimes the box chuffing can be annoying is rarely an issue and is much better mid-range than I give it credit for. But the cherry is the bass and how it brings it all together. For a $600 set on sale and a $400-$500 in back, a $150 center and $550 receiver, I'm sure it's no $20k system but I don't even get to listen to this enough. No need to spend more money, I need more time to spend with what I have. It really is just an enjoyable system that I'm happy with. I'm an audiophile, or, at least, an extremely critical audio listener and I used to think JBL is what normies would buy, like bose or Sonos, but I'm sold. I even bought JBL earbuds and they are a total smash hit. If audio reviewers said this they would be out of a job. Most likely a lot of speaker companies would go out of business. And everyone would have to find something else to do or they would be using that time listening to their music. Sincerely, Me 🐏

Hi Jay, wish you discussed amplifier recommendations for the Totem Tribe. I have Totem Element Embers, which I think are fantastic speakers and probably have a similar sonic signature to the Tribes. My integrated amp, a Musical Fidelity X- A 200R, seemed just right for my old Totem Model 1s, but my gut feeling is that something more analytical might be a better match for the Embers. Getting the equipment mix right seems so important for the system overall and is so helpful from the reviewer as they typically have a good amount of gear to “mix and match”. Thanks for your reviews, they are insightful.

@mhegerman19778 ай бұрын
Totally different sounding speakers. The Borreson are very impressive, with tremendous speed, accuracy and detail. Which will drop your jaw ... for at least 10 min. After that, I found them quite fatiguing due to the exacting and clinical sound. I found myself listening more for details than just listening to the music. With the Buchardts you give up a little less detail, speed and transparency, but they are much warmer, more musical speakers that are less fatiguing, IMO. If you are looking for a fast & hyper detailed speaker, Borreson are amazing. But I like musical and less fatiguing speakers, so the Borreson sound is not for me.

I am 99% sure that the original KLH Model 5 was not offered as a kit. I bought a new pair of them in 1972 when I was working at an audio repair shop part time in college. I got them at 50% off MSRP which manufacturers offered to employees of retail dealers and authorized repair shops (dealer cost was 40% off MSRP). Henri Kloss (the K in KLH) Kloss co-founded Acoustic Research (AR) with Edgar Villchur in 1954. So obviously KLH designs were somewhat similar to AR, but Kloss designed them both (along with Villchur at AR). The original KLH 5 had 2 midranges drivers side-by-side instead of the modern one that has one midrange, but the modern midrange drivers "look" similar to the original KLH model 5, even though they are obviously completely new designs. For example, even though there is only one midrange on the modern Model 5, the metal flange (somewhat unusual shape) on the midrange driver looks almost identical to the original and was obviously custom made to look that way. Also, the original Model 5 tweeter had a screen cover over it like the modern Model 5. The beveled edges of the original cabinet were somewhat similar, but the original was thicker and overall I think the speaker system was heavier than the modern version.
@Winterfell10669 ай бұрын
Did he say it was a kit or it was a hit when the speaker came out? I think he meant to say it was a hit and misspoke.
@Mark-rw3kw9 ай бұрын
@@Winterfell1066 I don't know, maybe Jay said hit and it was my mistake. I don't think the Model 5 was as big a hit as the AR 3a or the Advent Loudspeaker, also designed by Henry Kloss when he left KLH and started Advent to develop a low-cost projection television, but had trouble financing the leading-edge research and development. To earn some money, Kloss decided to build a high-performance low-cost dual driver speaker system called the Advent Loudspeaker, and it was very popular. When I got my KLH 5's in 1972 it was not sold at retail in Austin TX or San Antonio, and I got mine directly from KLH because the repair shop I worked at was an authorized repair shop for KLH (and and just about every other brand). I don't recall if it was even possible to get stuff like that "mail-order" in 1972. I only heard about the KLH Model 5 because the owner of the repair shop I worked at had a pair, connected to a Phase Linear 200 power amp and playing a pre-recorded tape on a Revox reel-to-reel at 15 IPS, and I was blown away when I heard it.

Hi Jay! I still have them, but are in storage, Spica TC-50's. They are imaging champs. But I was thinking... will the Kef LS50's have the same imaging of right - left, but also depth? I like that can focus on the placement of instruments and singers.

@jayiyagi What do you think about pairing LS50 Metas with Marantz 40n?

Would the Tekton double impacts, be a good comparison for the Arendal? I bought the double impacts off of your recommendation, and I’m wondering if I should have bought the Arendal speakers. Did I make a mistake?

What about the Arendal 1961? They are still available in their outlet for < $1,300.

Hello. Are you planning to review the Buchardt P300?

I have Tribes and a pair of 5’s. But what I miss are my Sky Towers and Lumina 2.

The way Jay reviewed the Tribes I didn’t think he would ever sell them, I want to give them a listen soon. What are your thoughts, after owning them for a while? Cheers

@@Openeyesopenheart42 great imaging, sound stage and bass. They don’t only sound great for the size, they just sound great overall. I do find them a bit fatiguing on the top end compared to other speakers I’ve owned.
@Openeyesopenheart429 ай бұрын
My ears are now 51 yrs old, what may be a little fatiguing to you may well be fine for me. I have been in construction for 30 yrs so my top end sensitivity is somewhat reduced. Thanks for your reply, I will keep it in mind when I have a listen. Cheers from Australia

i have the arro's and looking at tribe tower or forest sig's. everyone (including totem) push the tribes. i'm sure awesome but the top end worries me a bit, hence the forest sig. thoughts appreciated.

How do you see the Alta Alec floorstanding speaker?

Love listening to you. I brought a set of soundartist 15inch concentric speakers after your review. I am wondering do you still listen to them? And what amplifier would you recommend

I have the totem tribe tower. Found a used pair at a decent price. I figured they are smaller than a set of bookshelf with stands. Run them with a Heaven11 amp. My Canadian setup. I like it, but I have problem with my room so I can’t give a final verdict. Added a Kef KC sub for a bit more bass

I would buy the Klipsch RP8000F again. Big bass, big soundstage, neutral and not even close to the typical bright Klipsch sound. Sold it, because even neutral spakers are not for me, I'm leaning more towards the warmer sound that is exactly what you prefer.

Loved this analysis. Im the owner of the Buchardt S400 mk II amplified with a Linn Selekt with the Katalyst DAC. Im not sure if is the Linn Selekt pairing, but the Buchardts do not sound warm at all in my 11.5 x 11.5 feet room. How far from the wall you place it to improve the bass....

Yamaha NS1000 only speakers I need to own again. Sounded better than Wilson Maxx II which costs over hundred thousand.

What are your thoughts regarding the Sun Audio Purified 4? It is an active system where you can use your own DSP, power amps, and so on. It has Purifi and Bliesma transducers and a sealed alu spherical enclosure.

Have you heard the Fire V2? How would you say they compare to the Tribe?

I thought the Triangle Magellan Duetto 40th Anniversary and the Totem Tribe will be on your list since you raved about them so much. Personally, I will spend the extra money on theTriangle over the Totems any time, they are just that good.

I would love to know what you think of Bryston speakers and subs. I have a pair of Mini T's and am considering their maching Mini T subwoofer. But for $5k I could go with a pair of Rel S/510's.

Hi Jay, all your videos are fantastics, you are doing an essential job, I ha ve a question for you, for now on I have the Elac Unifi 2.0 an I want to upgrade, do you have a suggestion, I am Thinking about the Fyne 500sp, Sous Faber Lumina, Butchardt. What do you thing ?

Sonics aside of ideal point source, I never understand the aversion to towers when quality stands occupy the same footprint. I always appreciate the benefit of the larger skinny volume. Is it just the aesthetic?

Am I wrong; wasn’t there previously quite a bit of love for Tekton; Zu Audio and/or Magnepan LRS ?
@Jayiyagi4 ай бұрын
Tekton yes, but I already have a few so do not "miss them" Zu audio no, I have never liked or reviewed them, Magnepan LRS yes, and I still own a pair, but it has now been replaced with the LRS plus which I have not reviewed yet.

@@Jayiyagi Nice, appreciate the clarity. Definitely looking to make some changes in our set-up (and finding a place to actually listen is next to impossible these days). So sadly it is very important to have input and hearing the views of people like you who actually get to listen is key to even having a remote chance at success.
