When I was little, the first snake I got to handle was a wild Garter snake. That snake was so chill about being handled by 4 little kids for probably an hour. Never musked or anything. Absolutely took off like an arrow the moment it was back on the ground, though. I'm always going to have a soft spot for Garters because of that experience.

I'm so glad you added Garters to the list. While they are very abundant where I'm from and well-known to even non-snake lovers, you hardly see them in captivity. I've had a baby Oregon Red-Spotted and a baby Albino Checkered housed together for the last few months and they are both doing so well together. I think you've described their behavior to a T in this one!

Love that garter snakes are getting more attention and it makes me wish people would get into water snakes more too. They may not be the prettiest of snakes (my local common water snakes are typically brown or grayish brown with little to no pattern), but they tame real easily, seem to cohab well with themselves or garter snakes (personal experience), and you can make some real cool enclosures for them. I had a water snake and two garter snakes in a 40 gallon (36 in by 18 in) back in the day that I had built a small pool in on one end with a submersible pump that I put feeder fish in. Since I no longer do wild caught I'm not likely to ever keep them in the near future, but I still enjoy having both snake species in addition to my regular ones.

I had him for a lots of years before he died (he got sick and the vet and I simply couldn't get it under control). Former significant other had (has?) two box turtles he has had for over 25 years. They were very much cool. I researched and made their enclosure a proper environment. They were a lot happier and much more interactive when I got it all done.

The spades are super easy pets to keep!! they'll come out in the evening and at night and croak and hop around and its so fascinating watching them eat :O id really love to get garter snakes in the future as well!! something about them just makes me want to know more about them and watch how they behave from day to day- really gorgeous snakes! considering gopher snakes and more geckos down the road too now haha

For the gecko, you could name him Gary, Garth, or Knobby. I have always liked garter snakes in the garden. But I don't see them very often. My son says he sees them all the time. I suggested that he could just catch one if he wants a snake. He thinks that is a good idea; but, he's concerned about diseases a wild caught snake might have.

The gecko, because it can live on sand (like in Ancient Egypt) and it's latin name, Nefertiti, after the Queen of Egypt. Incredibly cute!
