My friends and family looked at me like I was crazy for spending $2200 USD on a complete bike. I told them over and over there are bikes out there that cost over 10k, frames alone that cost over 5k. Even my bike, if I bought it as a frame and then built it with the exact parts it came with it would have cost me around $4000 to build.
@marcalvarez48903 жыл бұрын
If you keep a bike for 10 years, then a $2000 bike is only about 50 cents a day. They probably pay 3x that in coffee or soda a day, and never even think about it. Most people are myopic, they only see what's in front of them, and not the long term. Their expensive soda and coffee habits will give them diabetes that'll cost them 1million in healthcare, while your bike, which costs a third of that soda, will keep you alive and healthy with no long term diseases to treat. Myopic. Thats what they are.

I do think cheaper bikes do not always get love. Don't get me wrong, if I had that sort of money doing nothing, I would definitely drop it on a decent full-sus. But when I did my last bike purchase, it was a 2014 model Malvern Star Switch 29-7 (not a very popular brand outside of AU/NZ it seems) which was at the time an $AU800 bike that I've upgraded over the years to have better fork, dropper post and 1x as I've needed it and had the budget. It might not be all singing and all dancing, but still very much runs and suits the type of riding I like to do. I would love to see more love for the budget-friendly options because, while they're not all-singing and all-dancing, there are plenty of decent options still for those on a budget and you can still have a lot of fun with them.

I bought my first trek hardtail for $750 and I thought that was outrageous. This was when a fully speced FS was $8k. Within a couple of years that top price had jumped to $12k but was all carbon fiber (wheels, bars, cranks, etc) and that was probably around 2012-2014. So prices haven't really gone up so much but the amount of bikes to choose from has multiplied many times and the technology has also increased with lighter carbon, electronic shifting and weight reduction thought impossible. I now own 4 bikes: Litespeed gravel@ over 5k, Ridley Fenis at over 5K, Trek top fuel @ over 5k and on old Rocky mountain that has been relegated to grocery getter @ over $1k. And I didn't pay full retail for any of them.

I’m well over 12k into my yeti sb150 at this point and have zero regrets. I could have spent close to 1/10th of this cost and still had a bike that would have scooted me down the trail just fine for 90% of what I ride. At the end of the day it all comes down to what you want to spend your pennies on. There are fantastic bicycles at price points from low all the way to ludicrous. For me and my riding needs/wants, this made sense.
@Tony.7953 жыл бұрын
The issue with these high prices are the ludicrous profit margins the manufacturers are getting. There's just no logical way that a mountain bike costs more than a brand new dirt bike. The components are mostly very cheaply made in the far east, even the best fox or rockshox forks and shocks. A KYB factory mx fork is about a grand more than a Fox 40. That price difference is quite small if you take into account that an mtb fork is way easier to make than an mx fork and Fox is made in Taiwan.

@@ThisIsTheMajor honors university degree in econ. how about you?
@retardno0022 жыл бұрын
@@littlegoobie that is correct, however, the equipment needed to build everything in house is not cheap. It also lets you do QC on the spot on your own parts but that also costs time and therefore money. Higher labor costs in the west translate to these prices, I doubt the profit margin is that big but definitely increases the more you profit from that initial investment (which means the components which are made in Asia for a lot less are indeed luxury priced but that money goes to the big boys like Sram and Shimano who spend more on marketing and design than on manufacturing).
