don't be so narrow minded, at least a seventh of the world's population speaks mandarin. nearly 4x the amount that speak spanish. just because it's not relevant to you doesn't mean it's not relevant at all! it's seen as an important language to international business, since china is wealthy and powerful. and a handful of countries other than china speak it as well
@victorius66359 жыл бұрын
MsPotatobag you didn't understand what i was trying to say, of course chinese is way more important than spanish when it comes to international business. I just think that english is the world's language, the language that almost everybody can speak and understand, at least a little bit

@alanliu37489 жыл бұрын
aaron sango While I understand what you're trying to say, I feel that it's a bit inaccurate. After all, 3.500 years ago, Egypt was an extremely powerful country still, and ~1.500 years ago, the European Frankish Empire was also an impressive empire. There's really no way to justify all the powerful civilizations that have been founded and fallen in such a small statement. For one thing, you've completely ignored the Persian Empires like the Timurids and the Safavids. And you also ignored the various Indian Empires such as the Mauryans, the Kushanese, the Mughals, etc. And the Ottoman Empire was also a very powerful empire that reached the height of its power 500 years ago. The British at the time were a weak entity that paled in comparison to the rising Spanish Empire and would only gain true power around Napoleonic times. Finally, the four great civilizations that are commonly considered to be the first civilizations were founded on: 1) The Mesopotamian River Valley (Fertile Crescent), 2) the Indus River Valley (India), 3) The Yellow River Valley (Huang He/China), 4) and finally the Nile River valley (Egypt). So Greece was actually not considered to be one of the cradles of civilization in the respect of early civilizations. As a matter of fact, Archaic Greece began around 800 BC, and the Classical Greece that we think of when we think of Ancient Greek culture began in 500 BC, or 2.500 years ago.
@boraybioece38009 жыл бұрын
alan liu nice essay :) btw, u dont need to copy and paste history text book content. and the only information i want to emphasize is that China as the only survive major ancient civilization, the rest of all cultures or empires u mentioned above were all gone, or not consider a major or dominate culture for public any more, except China. u don't need to agree with my point of view. with the passage of time, i guess more and more people around the world will agree with that point even less than in 5 years, we will see. Chinese culture circle(China, Korea, Japan, Hongkong,Taiwan, Macao, Singapore). Even now China is still the second biggest economy country GDP. or biggest economy country for PPP,and still growing... as she always been.
@trafo609 жыл бұрын
aaron sango The thing with China is hat it combines culture with political identity. For more than two thousand years, Chinese culture has basically been congruent with the political entity called China. Western culture is just as influential globally (or even more influential) as Chinese culture, but it doesn't overlap as much with one single political entity. What you would call Western culture started in Ancient Greece (which was heavily influenced by the early civilizations of the Middle East), Greek culture was subsumed by the Roman Empire, Roman culture was subsumed by Christianity, and the modern European nations carried Western culture around the globe. Many different, powerful and globally influential nations today can be said to all belong to one tradition, as have many fallen empires before them. Similar situation for the Islamic World, which has subsumed much of the ancient oriental cultures. The reason China 'has been around for so long' is mainly geographical, as its almost unpassable borders - the highest mountain range in the south, vast steppes and deserts to the west, tundra to the north, an ocean to the east - have kept it isolated from all the other competing countries in world history.
@boraybioece38009 жыл бұрын
trafo60 Greece belongs to hellenes,Ancient roman belongs to latin, those two countries, or cultures has totally different languages, different races, even different characters. btw, todays people who live in Italy or Greece are totally different races compare with people who lived in those place 2000 years ago, they cant even recognize their characters, how could you possible simply combine those two cultures into the same category . and 90% Chinese are still Han nationality is the same as their ancestors 5000 years ago . btw, is China has been consider as isolated country or culture ? Even Now! China is still the dominate country, no matter in United Nations, economy and military or populations ! as for the rest countries or races, i agree, religions are good for them. no offend. anyway, just enjoy ur own culture and be happy with it. thats what i want to say.

Spanish: Over 400,000,000 speakers English: Over 300,000,000 speakers Hindi: Over 250,000,000 speakers Arabic: Over 200,000,000 speakers

Now I'm confused; how can the amount of how much people speak a certain language be an opinion? isn't that amount meant to be just a fact?
@DevilleQueen8 жыл бұрын
Leto85 The video wasn't based on the number of people that speak it, it was based on how widespread the language is. For example, you'll really only find a bunch of people speaking Hindi in India; that's why it wasn't on the list. French is not spoken by nearly as many people, but it covers multiple continents, making it more widespread. As for ***** , what are you talking about?
@Leto858 жыл бұрын
Ashley Miller Thanks for your reply. I understand the video was based on how widespread the languages mentioned are (doesn't that equals the importance of the language in its own?) but still the line in the video I took as if a fact was brought in the form of an opinion. I hope I've explained this better then before. ***** I must admit that I didn't get your text either. I envy you for speaking English and Spanish! Both are my favorite foreign languages. But I'm getting there.
@JohnDoe-ix7gn9 жыл бұрын
The most useful languages are: 1. English The reasons are quite obvious 2. Spanish It is the second most spoken language in the world (by native speakers) and at the same time is distributed in several nations with a growing middle class. The World Bank forecasts show that Latin America will enter the First World in the middle of this century. If we add that Hispanics will be most in USA (2050), it is easy to understand the importance of this language. At the moment, Spanish is very useful at the regional level, particularly in the areas of trade and marketing, however, falters in the areas of pharmaceutical and technology. 3. French The birth rate of African member countries of the Francophonie is the great advantage of the French. The problem of this language is its essential dependence of France. It's not like the English or Spanish that can live while the earth swallow to England and Spain. In other words, as the French language is not part of African culture, it is not difficult for the Anglo-Saxon World seduce to the francophone African if they can make profits with it. 4. Mandarin. It is the most spoken language in the world, however, is only useful in certain regions of China (not all). The weakness of this language is in the little attractiveness of the lack of democracy in China, adding that Mandarin is difficult in learning for the Western World. 5. German It is the direct adversary of the French in Europe besides being a great advantage in the areas of pharmaceutical and technology. Its weakness is the low birthrate of their natives , so it is easy that German to lose its current relevance in few decades.

+Alin Banka Well, perhaps I exaggerate a little when to say that Hispanics will be most in 2050 (USA), but I'm aware that the sons of mix of Hispanics with a person from another culture often declare itself Hispanic. In the US, the ethnic identity is much stronger than the national identity. Hispanic, White, Black are identities stronger than "American". If the Spanish does not grow by the Hispanic immigration, grows by development of Latin America (combination of nations of Spanish speakers have a GDP surpassed only by China and USA). Even the UK has Spanish as the most important language for the british. Look this www.britishcouncil.org/sites/britishcouncil.uk2/files/languages-for-the-future-report.pdf

My list: 1. English (You need it on the internet and basically everywhere else.) 2. Latin (I love the literature, it's good for personal development.) 3. French (If you wanna go to Africa.) 4. Japanese (Anime, and Japanese tourists everywhere.^^) 5. German (Great authors.) 6. Spanish (Great music, lots of speakers around the world.) 7. Mandarin (Lots of speakers and you're perceived as sophisticated if you just mention you speak it.) 8. Turkish (In certain cities in Germany, it's the foreign language you'll hear most.) 9. Russian (Again, you hear it a lot in Germany, also great authors.) 10. Arabic (Lots of speakers everywhere and rich culture.) The culture argument goes for every language as long as you're curious. I mean culture in terms of history and politics of the countries where the respective language is important. My list of favorite languages is different, by the way. :)

Tanaqet Why is latin a important language today? Nobody speaks it anymore, so we dont need study it, just if we want to go to Vatican city. If you say japanese ''Anime, and Japanese tourists everywhere'' not everbody likes anime/japan, so why is it important in the world? ''Turkish (In certain cities in Germany, it's the foreign language you'll hear most.)'' you are saying turkish is imporant ONLY in Germany, not in the world. its your opinion ok but latin, japanese and turkish are ridiculous. I agree with english, french, spanish, arabic, russian, german and mandarin. but portuguese and hindi are important too. I am not being arrogant or stupid, i am just saying that. and btw sorry bad english

Rodrigo Kröhling I should've added: "Most important languages for me personally." Of course, you won't ever need Latin if you don't like the literature. The top 5 are languages I've been learning and that turned out to help me out a lot. Sorry for the ambiguity. :)

If you're in the western hemisphere, you can get by with English and Spanish. Spanish will help you learn French and other romance languages. Portuguese would be a good bonus to know. On the other side of the world, you probably need at least a tiny bit of English as well because its the best 2nd language to know period. German is good for Europe, French is a great language in Europe and comes in handy in Africa. Russian would open up a vast area of landscape to travel. German and Russian are very good for science and usage in internet is high but English still has them beat. In my opinion, French, Russian, and German are more or less tied in importance; it just depends on where you live. Arabic is very useful but has a lot of variety so its not as easy to go from one country to the other. If you don't want to learn Arabic then Persian and Turkish are good. With Arabic, French and English, you can get around almost anywhere in Africa. Mandarin is extremely difficult to learn for foreigners and chances are they already speak a little English or fluently but its good for business and learning any Asian language is very impressive. India has a huge number of languages and many already speak English but Bengali and Urdu/Hindi are great. Malay/Indonesian is also worth mentioning. One thing to keep in mind is that in the regions near countries like Austrialia, Brazil, Mexico, India and in central Africa you will find the highest number of different languages and diversity with more than 50 percent of all known languages.

So, I REALLY want to stress the fact the shades of color matter! So many absolutely ridiculous statements like "They don't speak *insert language* in *insert country*!" Yes, THEY DO. You might have not met them, or they might not be in your region, but indeed a lighter shade of color means the specified language is obviously less spoken in that region/country, if the color becomes pink the number of speakers there is significantly lower. It's not rocket science people. Yes, there are Spanish speakers in the Philippines, yes there are Mandarin speakers in Europe & South Africa. Are those claims really that unbelievable? I personally feel like German (I live in Germany so I miiight be a little biased) is really useful, at least for me. There are actually quite many high-quality tutorials, KZbinrs etc on KZbin in German on all kinds of topics. I mostly watch English videos but sometimes there are some German videos I just understand some topics better (not because of the language itself, I'm rather good at English so that's not a problem). English and German (or whatever country you live in) is a powerful combo, I don't think I'll really need more than that :))

English and Mandarin jostle for first place. Spanish is an undeniable third. Arabic and Russian would jostle for fourth. The French speaking area overlaps with the Arabic speaking area, and most of Canada doesn't speak French. Likewise, the Swahili speaking area overlaps a lot of the English speaking part of Africa. But Indonesian and Portuguese both include big areas and lots of people.
@fs400ion5 жыл бұрын
Well French is a much wider language than any other language (except English and Spanish). So no, French is between Spanish and Arabic. Québec speaks 100% French and the rest of Canada still has French as second language.
@NarutoUzumaki-be4zj10 жыл бұрын
I think English will always be the number 1 language in the world based on usefulness. What has to happen in order for Mandarin to be considered almost as useful: establish economic dominance over South East Asia. If China becomes extremely powerful economically then South East Asia might consider using Mandarin due to the proximity of the country. We can sort of see this phenomenon happening in Malaysia and Mongolia (I know it's not part of SO Asia). We are looking at another 500 million + speakers of Mandarin if this happens. Also French is an important language because French speaking Africa has the fastest growing population in the world and Africa has the potential to become the China of the future once the Chinese obtain and demand higher incomes. Another important language I think is Hindustani which is both Urdu and Hindi spoken in India and Pakistan mostly. I mean, despite in between 100 million and 250 million people speaking English in this area, a little under half speak Hindi. And India has potential in becoming a superpower. So in my opinion: #1 English #2 French or Mandarin #3 French or Mandarin #4 Hindustani
@ricksantos15802 жыл бұрын
Agreed also Chinese/Mandarin is overwhelming focused in China. Unlike English which is pretty much on Every continent in a Big way. Also longer term China is going through a Demographic collapse so I expect these numbers of Mandarin speakers to drop significantly in the coming decades....
@KyleAPemberton8 жыл бұрын
Chinese probably should be #3 or #4. It is only prevalent in 1 country. So the high number of native speakers is irrelevant as they are not influential in countries outside their own.

Mandarin may have the most amount of speakers in sheer numbers but if you find yourself lost in Brazil/Mexico/Egypt/Norway/Slovakia etc etc are you more likely to find someone who speaks basic English or basic Mandarin? English obviously, case closed.
@fdannn69268 жыл бұрын
Alex Tee Exactly, the importance of Mandarin/Cantonese etc is highly exaggerated, outside of China and select Asian countries and pockets of immigrant communities in western nations the language is irrelevant. Even more so considering 95+% of all speakers are Chinese and no other race of people.
@SchengW9 жыл бұрын
Fairly speaking, Chinese is not so useful but beautiful. it may be the only languague in the world that uses picture to represent every word. It's natural and unique. the chinese symbols dont show the pronounciation but the meanning. It's the only language that existed for over 3000 years and it still lives. Spain conquered latin america and then the Latinos started to speak spanish, where China was conquered by many other nations like mongolia, but then the Mongolien started th lern Chinese. you see the difference.

@michaelzhang50748 жыл бұрын
+Zained Jalled +김태성 (まき 마키) I have already mastered (I think) Mandarin, so learning French--- especially the pronunciation--- would be somewhat easier for me than any other bilingual speaking english and a non-mandarin language because I already can form some interesting sounds and think differently too. I can only hope conjugations will have mercy on me though, chinese doesn't have any and english ones are more predictable. :3
