In fact, I do not know whether you know or not, but in the year 2024, Arabic is among the top 5 languages for work, tourism, culture, and history. I do not know where you came from with this list. It is certain that you calculated it in relation to the number of speakers. Whether you counted it this way or that, Arabic is the fifth place in terms of the number of speakers. Speakers before French and after Spanish. In terms of importance, Arabic is also one of the top five languages, so I don’t know why it is not on your list.

I am very grateful that English is my first language and that I speak Spanish as well, but I have found the most fulfillment from my journey learning the Indigenous language Quichua (Kichwa) because I find when you are making the effort to learn a less commonly taught language, that the connections you make with native speakers of that language are much deeper. And when I visit a multilingual place, I find that local people are much more appreciative when you make the effort to use phrases from the local language versus the colonizer language. So while more commonly spoken languages are certainly important for communicating with a larger number of people, I also strongly encourage people do not discount learning a less commonly taught language ❤ I think a lot of the Nelson Mandela quote: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
@Lauren_aida
@Lauren_aida Жыл бұрын
Edit: apparently that is a commonly misquoted version of the real Mandela quote: “Because when you speak a language, English, well many people understand you, including Afrikaners, but when you speak Afrikaans, you know you go straight to their hearts.”

I'm Spanish-Italian and I speak both languages since I'm very little. Then I learnt English in school, 'cause it's mandatory to learn in Spain since you are about 3-4 years old. After that, in High School I learnt French and German, and autonomously I learnt Brazilian Portuguese and Greek. Now I'm taking French and Mandarin lessons. I can speak now Spanish, Italian, English, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Greek and a little bit of Mandarin. I'm also very interested in learn other languages like Albanian, Farsi and Latvian, and I love how Farsi sounds so, maybe I'll include it.

I was lucky to grow up in English and in French and I've been working on Spanish for 7 years. I'd like to seriously dive into one final language, but I'm not taking the decision lightly. I've been deciding between German and Chinese for like a year now. I find I run into Germans everywhere I travel. They all speak English but it'd be fun to be able to connect with them in their language and participate in their German side conversations. Chinese, though, is just a massive language spoken in maybe every major city across the globe. In the near future, I will be travelling to more German-speaking places than Chinese-speaking places, but I'm hopeful China will become a more welcoming travel destination in my lifetime. Please weigh in with your opinions, or better yet, lived experiences!

*Austrian from Vienna here, I speak German, English, I learned french, but not as good as I would wish to have learned it, Serbocroatian, Macedonian (+Bulgarian) and with that a good chunk of Russian. You could say I had a lot of luck, my mother Austrian with roots in the Balkans and my father who was a soldier during 1991 Yugoslavia (not very good times for that region) and migrated to Vienna, through him I got the slavic languages and through my mother German. The Supirior Austrian school system ;) fixed the rest with Russian, french and Latin. I personally think, learning languages is a matter of what surrounds you, family wise and the proximity of other countries with their culture and their languages. Europe is a small continent with a concentrated power in languages, so I would advice any language learner, if you want to learn something, the first step should be the love and the prepardness for discipline and the readiness to meet other people, only then you should start the journey.*

By nature, I and most Indonesian 'force' to be a polyglot. When I born, we use mother language (Javanese, with 5 types of conversation), then religious language (Arabic, to learn more about faith), educational language (Bahasa Indonesia in my school), cultural language (Sundanese with some dialects, Betawi, Madurese, for daily communication), and foreign language (English, Japanese (just a little), as addition) .. But, of course, Bahasa Indonesia is my best choice)..

Thank you, this has been very helpful. I speak a bit of German, and am learning French, Latin, and (again) Spanish. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and have rather a love /hate relationship with Spanish. I fell in love with German at about the age of five, while watching a captured German war film with my Dad. The film turned out to be "The Triumph of the Will" and you can probably guess the speaker. Right now, I'm considering Mandarin, but wonder whetber I'm too old. Shrug. (Pssst. Late 60s.) Your family background sounds similar to mine; Scots-Irish from my Dad's side, German-English from my Mom's. My mother's family escaped Kassel, Germany (they were Jews. This was during the Kaiser Wilhelm regime, 1870's) moved first to Illinois, later settled in Solomon, Kansas. Again, great video with great info! Thanks again. PS- checked myself: the ruler of Germany was Bismarck not Wilhelm. Time to go to sleep. 🙄

@@AlexanderAyling All of it is wonderful. 😄👍 If there is any possibility to come visit the both of you and have a chat with you, just let me know. Planning to move to New Zealand in a couple of years with my son and his father. For him it would be a return because he was living there some 13 years ago or so. But for me it would be a dream come true. The way you live right now is the way my family and I lived when I was a child living in Brasil. To me it is wonderful to see you both enjoying life making the best out of every day. I'm truly looking forward to live a simple grounded life again, just like you do now, surrounded by as much nature as possible. Not that Austria isn't beautiful or without lots of nature surrounding us but it is also very packed in terms of people and houses. If you are going to plan a trip to Austria some day you are very welcome to stay with me and my family for a couple days.

Hola, mi amigo. Mi nombre es William de Nueva York. I am a native English American speaker and who is proficient in Spanish. I am strongly considering the idea of learning Greek since I choose to learn once again Spanish. So, I am going to try and focus on two languages. The only thing is I never once learned a language which requires a completely different writing style. I noticed Greek isn't as widely used as it once was but there are so many things great about learning this language. There is about 30% of the English language which originated from the Greek language and so much more than 30% of the Spanish language which its roots originated which is Greek. Greek is an excellent language to learn due to its diversity in its connection to so many different aspects from medicine, math, philosophy and great literature and lastly Christianity. You should try Greek it sounds so much like Spanish and Greek shares so many similarities with other romance languages.
