Top 5 most useful houses in the Elder Scrolls Online for all player types.
Even if you're not a housing enthusiast, you'll probably want to purchase a couple of these for your in-game quality of life! Each of these homes provide your characters a free way to access a major city of the game as well as the amenities that come along with it. I've attempted to be as objective as possible in my rankings by considering which services are available to each home along with their general proximity in the city. This is not a ranking of how awesome each home is, but rather a ranking of the functionality they provide outside of decorating and you can check my math (along with rankings for other homes) here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Snugpod in Grahtwood is the house every player should buy first. It's an ugly little house, but so incredibly useful because of what it's near, as the video says. I totally agree with this. It's near a stables, crafting stations, a wayshrine, and an Undaunted Enclave.

I am impressed how good your character looks. Most high level players characters look like something that crawlerd out of Shivering Isles/Oblivion, but yours is cool, unique and within what can be considered lore-friendly. Great respect for that.

@@Kalam0n it's always funny when there is a gathering of ex-810s and you can tell all of them want to look super unique but they all look the same. They usually come in 2 flavors: 1. with the winged armour painted in the nevest expansion color. 2. with the seasonal event armour painted in the most neon colors they could find. Strange skins always included. What impresses me most usually are cool looking ones when at first glance you can't tell if they are a player or an npc. Like recently I was running around Rivenspire and there was a guy fishing on a dock decked up in lion guard armour. He looked soo cool. Last time I did dungeon we had Yen from Witcher and I was amazed at how detailed the look was. Or this one guy that was showing me his house, he had an orc that was a retired cyrodill vet. Complete with a civilian clothes and a bandage over the eye. But the best one must have been the Nord from Skyrim in studded leather armour and with a giantic axe. I swear he looked like he was about to fus-ro-da npcs from the bridge at any moment XD. Sorry for long post.

I would like to add that Snugpod is also very close to the Master Writ Vendor so if you are farming Master Writ Vouchers, it’s the ideal home for all the free traveling. I usually farm Enchanting writs, as they require less, and set up my Enchanting station in Snugpod and go to town.

The most effeciant for me - Space vs cost: 1 Hall of Lunar Champion (Elsweyr Chapter) 700 item limit, free (no gold cost), 4 very different areas to build from. 2. Sugar Bowl - Right next to a wayshrine at the center of Rimmen that's near everything (Stations, banker, etc) and usually free with quest. 3. Humblemud - 200 item limit with ESO+, garden + a home you can build in floors for only 40k 4. Autumns Gate - Same as Humblemud but more easy to decorate, a standard farmhouse anyone can make a home. Great first house. 5. Flaming Nixon Deluxe - 100 item limit spacious room for very cheap in the middle of a capitol in Mournhold. Hard to beat.

Saint Delyn Penthouse has always been my favorite. Access to the outlaws refuge from the same Canton the home is in. Then all the crafting stations, bank, guild traders, stable & wayshrine are all in one spot. I know you have to go through a few doors to get to everything but for my it's worth not having to run around an entire city. 👍 Love the deco to the houses by the way! It's funny, I turned the Flaming Nix into a tavern too! 🍻

Humble Mud in Bal Foyen for 40k is one I use often. All the crafting and bank are in a hut across the street. It has an interior and a walled back garden. Great starter house.

Rimmen is the best! I know there's a lot of love out there for Vivec City as well but the Saint Delyn Penthouse is on the wrong side of the city and you've gotta go through two doors just to get outside (even with port to exterior). So, I do all my crafting writs in Rimmen. Thank you about the character as well, I think Khajiit can be tough to make look good. These are strong entries for early game housing, Snugpod is also great for turning in master writs as you're right across a bridge from Rolis Hlaalu. Mid game I would highly recommend Ample Domicile in Shadowfen. It is a quick run to reach the crafting area/outfit station bank right next to the crafting area, and another straight line shot to writ turn in/stables. The only negative is no Impresario so you still have to travel elsewhere for ticket spending. Shadowfen also doesn't often suffer from the lag major Chapter cities experience except when the wading kilt first dropped.

@@Kalam0n Hell yeah! For instance, ebonheart chateau doesn't get any credit, like, at all... BUT, the thing has a super unique & oppressive atmosphere (perfect for 'dark' characters) you can hear the volcano roar, there's ash storms etc. In general I feel they could improve on ambience a little, you can't even hear rain while indoors, but yeah, one of the reasons ebonheart chateau is so unique.

Might also mention that Hall of the Lunar Champion in Rimmen is a reward for completing the Northern Elswyr story campaign. It's starts off with just the central shrine room but you can open up the other three wings with just in game play resulting in a pretty big house without spending a single gold coin.

with the free homes you can actually claim all of them if you create new characters and redo the “Room To Spare” quest. There are some conditions (alliance etc) but once you ulock them all you can use them on all your accounts. I unlocked these early game for teleporting

Thank you! I also find that odd, but at the very least the most useful houses (in my opinion) are always available and can be acquired without crowns. Most of the crown store exclusives are cool, but serve little to no functional purpose outside of being fun to decorate.

Rimmen inn room has been my home base since I started. Outside door, wayshrine right outside the door, short way to bank and all crafting stations neatly put together it's unbeatable for me

Same for me, at least once I realized how good it was. I started playing just before Elsweyr but didn't really get into housing until late in the expansion. I probably use the Sugar Bowl Suite more than Snugpod at the moment, but I haven't been keeping up with my Master Writs or running Undaunted much lately.

I chose the Golden Gryphon Garret cause of the high roof being able to make a 2nd floor but also it’s in the most beautiful place in the game and pretty close to a shrine.

I've also thought about that in the past, I love dropping by the Antiquariant's Alpine Gallery to farm some mudcrabs. But it's hard to quantify - and I'm sure there are benefits I don't even know about, like easy access to a farming spot for specific endeavors.

I don't remember when/how I got Sleek Creek House but it's got a decent courtyard and I placed all my crafting with tons of room, and teleporting outside is right next to outlaw refuge

I also think Pilgrim's Rest in Leyawin, Mara's Kiss in Vukhel Guard, the Rosy Lion in Daggerfall, the Ebony Flask Inn Room in Ebonhart, Saint Delyn's Penthouse in Viveck City (all of which can be gotten for free on characters that haven't completed the housing quest) and the Sleek Creek House in Rawl'kha, due to Rawl'kha's very small size, ease of access to crafting tables, bank & wayshrine, and step out the door and walk about 10 steps into the Outlaw's Refuge (which has another exit almost immedialy next to the wayshrine).

Totally agree on the inn rooms! Sleek Creek is one that I overlooked though, I did not realize just how close it was to the Outlaw's Refuge. I'm not sure if that's enough to crack my personal top 5, but it's probably one of the best for the thieves out there!

The most useful house by far for me is the Sleek Creek House in Rawl'kha (Reapers March). Everything is there within a small area: crafting, equipment color change, writs, merchants, guild stores, bank, wayshrine and outlaw's refuge. I began playing this game during pre-launch in 2014, took a break for a couple of years and am back in the game now. Rawl'kha is as busy as ever for the very reasons I mentioned. The Snugpod is also good because the respec skills and attributes shrines are nearby, but the crafting stations and bank are inside the big tree and so are not as easily accessible as in Rawl'kha. So to me, the #1 house to get is Sleek Creek House. It only costs 4400 crowns if a player doesn't mind spending a bit of real money for a crowns.

My favorite part about the Snugpod is it is so close to the Thieves Guild and hardly no guards so if I have a lot of bounty I go there to clear it and drop off my laundering

I'd flip Sugarbowl as #1 and Snugpod as #2 by a nose, because the outside port location in Rimmen is much more convenient for the Wayshrine, Crafting Stations, and Bank = the things you use most.....and its way cheaper. Either way, if you can afford it, I highly recommend both! I'll have to check out Flaming Nix, great info thanks!

The Rosy Lion Inn is my single most used house. Why? Because it is one door away from the wayshrine, which means it is a free teleport *everywhere*. I think I've paid for maybe a dozen teleports, if that. That one house has likely saved me hours of play time and 100ks of gold over the years. I think the EP one is also very close to a way shrine as well.

Another good home imo is Sleek Creek House in Rawl'kha, especially if you tend to find yourself with a bounty from time to time. Travel outside lands you steps away from the Outlaws Refuge. Plus, there are considerable amenities in Rawl'kha. Especially for one of the smaller towns in ESO.

Yes, when you can afford it, Sleek Creek is a good one. Close to the Outlaw Refuge, the wayshrine, and various regular & guild merchants. Also, Sleek Creek has a decent sized patio and courtyard allowing for placement of plants, outdoor furnishings, and attunable crafting stations. Also, a great view from the deck.

No Sleek CreeK? I'm surprised. Right next door to Outlaws Refuge, so great for any lawbreaker on the run. Crafting, crafting drop off point, banker, stable & wayshrine all in one place. Also a popular Guild Trader spot. It does cost more, but as it is a middle size house you can put more storage in it without ESO+. Great place for when you need to use the stable with your characters to train riding and have crafting & bank at hand.

So... I didn't give points for storage or Earthforge/Eyevea portal access when I made this. Which is part of the reason Sleek Creek didn't quite make the cut. I do think it's probably the #1 property I undervalued though and that will be rectified in the 2022 update (coming soon). I'm also adding ratings for Roister Club access, and Sleek Creek scores big there too!

One of the best! Especially if you need space for furnishings and home storage. I find Sugar Bowl more useful for daily use though since it's right next to the wayshrine, bank, and crafting areas. It's also the only inn room with an exterior door, no need to navigate through the inn itself.

I'd argue Captain Margaux's house isn't a must have because it is in the same city as the Rosy Inn, which is a free house you can get by doing a quest on a new toon. While Rosy Inn is further from the bank, it is closer to the Guild Merchants. So don't be in a rush to buy that one guys.

Counterpoint: traveling outside the Capt house puts you near all crafting stations and bank. You can hit both writ boards and complete each writ in path the the writ turn ins.

Quite a few! You can grab the Saint Delyn Penthouse for free if your character hasn't completed "Room to Spare" yet, and then the Amaya Lake Lodge and Ald Velothi Harbor House are purchasable with gold. There's a couple others but I believe they are crown store houses and not always available.

No, nothing like reshade. I am able to play with the graphical settings mostly maxed, and I'm using armor styles that were added to the game recently which are much higher fidelity than a lot of the older styles. Which house is best for a Thief character? I want an outlaws refuge nearby, so I can port home then empty my inventory at the fence, and maybe pay off my bounty. Love the decoration btw. Would be really great if you could add maps too. Would be able to see outlaw's refuges there.

One in rawl'kha is like 10 meters away from an outlaws refuge

Rawl'kha is probably the closest to an Outlaw's Refuge entrance. Snugpod is a bit further outside, but you've got a shorter run to the fence after you zone in.. Either one is an excellent option for thieves imo.

One thing I hadn't considered was guards though. You'll never run into a guard at Sleek Creek whereas you potentially could at Snugpod. It's not hard to avoid them at Snugpod, but they are around.

With the discount on housing coming right up during the event I’d really appreciate your thoughts on the more expensive homes. I’m looking to spend 2 million overall and would like to make some great purchases.. I’m still fairly new to the game so I don’t know that much about all the different houses… there’s so many!!!

That's a great question! I think Gardner House is probably near the top of that list (~1 mil). It's the only home in the DC capital of Wayrest. It has a lot of utility and it's the only way to get free quick travel to that city. Then I'd probably opt to grab a couple medium homes over another large, Sleek Creek in Rawl'kha (335k) and Grymharth's Woe in Windhelm (280k) are my top 2 in that regard. Both in cities with high utility and impressive guild trade volume on PC-NA. With the event discount, that probably leaves you with enough to pick up Cliffshade in Marbruk (255k) and The Ample Domicile in Stormhold (195k). Those are 5 great cities to have access to, each with 5+ guild traders that I find myself visiting on a weekly basis. Each of them also has Daily Writ Boards and Tribute Clubs.

Flaming Nix is the cheapest place in a capital city, which you need for writs and mage/fighters/undaunted dailies. I'm surprised Sleek creek isn't on the list, i think it's the easiest if you have heat to get to a thieves hideout. Maybe there are dlc zones that are easier, but base game. Honestly, i hadn't finished maxing out the bank/horse/bag slots before CP points, so i'd recommend doing that first before buying a 50k house. Though hindsight is 2020. But, after watching this i should definitely pick up flaming nix on the EU server.

Hindsight is indeed 2020 - I had not realized how close Sleek Creek was to the Outlaw's Den entrance. The Elden Root den is more compact though, so Snugpod & Sleek Creek offer pretty comparable access to the Fence. Of course, in Elden Root there is one guard you might have to avoid on your way. I do think Sleek Creek is easily the most useful medium home and should be in the top 5 especially since its utility has increased with the addition of Tales of Tribute.

I love the house in Windhelm. It's reasonably big. It's close to a wayshrine. You can put a ton of stuff inside. And I turned it into a crafting heaven. It's a bit expensive but it's worth it.

I've got 63K gold and I'm not used to the housing in ESO as I have every home in Skyrim all decked out. If you say this is a good home (I'm currently in Eastmarch) then I'm going with Autumn Hills (I think that's the name). Thanks for the input. I'm unclear though as to how much furnishings you can put in it. I'm only at level 41. Any advice?

@@philipauster6957 Buy a house you like the look of and get creative. I was talking about Grymhart's Woe. I like the climate of that house and that it is so close to a wayshrine. Also if you want to go all out decorating eso+ gives you 2x the space for furniture inside. It is a good idea to decorate during the free eso+ events.

Hey there! I'm on PC, so for me I can either travel to the home on foot or use the collections menu to teleport there (3rd tab). Either way, once inside it's F5 to bring up the purchase options (not every home can be bought with gold).

Wow I didn’t know houses were that cheap. Been playing for many months now and haven’t even considered housing because all the ones I have seen were many millions to buy so I thought it was out of reach for me.

Housing for all! Those big ones are cool, but take a lot of time and gold to decorate. The expensive ones also tend to be in more scenic locations so their functionality is limited to what's inside the house rather than providing easy access to a city's resources.

There's no such thing as a bad home! Humblemud may be the best home for anyone who can't afford to buy the crafting station furnishings as you've got access to all 7 stations right outside your front door. Bal Foyen is also a great zone to gather resources in and you're close to a wayshrine. It's a great first home, especially for a new player.

If you're new to ESO it's the Elder Scrolls MMO. It came out 3 years after Skyrim, but is actually a prequel set several hundred years prior to the main games.

I think everyone says that because it IS free. Not sure why you believe it isn't. The conviction expressed in your comment made me question reality, so I checked, and confirmed... there is no cost to fast travel to a home you own in TESO.

@@Kalam0n Then explain this to me : if I fast travel to a wayshrine it costs me 87 gold, if then I travel again it’s more than double (can’t remember how much). If I travel to my house and then to another wayshrine, it costs me the same amount as in the first situation..

While it is true that any fast travel not originating from a Wayshrine does reset the fast travel fee, there is no actual fee charged for traveling to a home you own. I don't think most players would consider that a cost, as no gold is ever removed from your inventory when you recall to a home you own.
