If you grew up when i did in the 70's and played bass you HAD to know these songs. All bass players out there you must know the masters of your instrument. Larry graham, Louis Johnson, Bootsy, Slave, Brick, Pleasure, War...Learn from these artist. Funk is how you learn this instrument. SORRY GUYS BUT JUST LIKE IN RAP MUSIC...OLD SCHOOL RULES. I am a middle-aged guy (if life expectancy is about 110 years give or take) and these choices hit my formative years of when I heard bass and wanted to get my hands on a bass. Every song was right on the money and when you introduced "Slide" I couldn't believe it. I love to jam with people on that song. My taste in music is broad but this type of style is within the bullseye of what I think an electric bass can do to a song to make it truly great. I can tell that you are an experienced teacher. Great slap groves from back in the day, Larry Graham inspired me to play bass.I was clueless at 17 but picked up a old 1969 Fender Precision bass with huge upside down ashtrays on it , it was very pretty but played great. Thanks ,,,

I actually think George Johnson plays the bass part on Get The Funk OutMa Face...when I saw them with Quincy ( ages ago ), they switched instruments for that song and every time I saw them it was that way

Great lesson man. One thing that might help a beginner is to play it on a 4 string bass not a 5 string, just to cut down on the confusion of what string your playing on.

you should definately mention Mark King as one of the biggest slap bass players. His technicues is hard to figure out, but as soon you manage to use the left hand to slap down hard on the fingerboard then People can start with the legendary riff Love Games. Look up at Cambridge bass lines he show how to play the Mark King style. Mark, Marcus, Larry are my fav bassplayers since i was just 14 years old now im 42, but still personally Mark King have to coolest bass riffs and the way he plays the bass.

Hey Maurice, that's called a "Fret Wrap" by a company called Gruv Gear out of Southern Cali. It acts as a string dampening device much like the "scrunchies" bass players used to tie around the necks of their basses. Check em out at www.gruvgear.com

just got a Fender Jazz for Christmas. i'm slowly learning notes. i guess the hardest thing for me is to figure out is which fingers to use to get to the right fret notes. does it really matter what specific fingers you use or is it all about your left hand comfort-zone? any stretching exercises you suggest?
