Thank you for the great review, as someone who programmed some of these tools it's very nice to see that people find them useful. We, devs of MX Linux are users of the system and pretty much created tools we wanted to use, sometimes we simply went "why is this not working (better)" and created a tool to fix that. I pretty much started because I wanted to fix something trivial, the first time I touched code was when I wanted to remove a silly "accept the license" in the installer that we took over from MEPIS, then I went, "why the installer doesn't let you install /home and root on different disks" and changed that and so on...

The Copy/Sync function of the MX User Manager tool allows you to align a newly created account to an existing one. It's really helpful if setting up a multi-user machine for, say a family.

MX Snapshot is looking pretty solid. Actually, all of this looks solid. I might try MX one day.
@TheQuixoticRambler2 жыл бұрын
Used snapshot in one instance, remaster in another, to copy live setup; with custom setup and packages. Now I boot from usb into a "fresh" custom system, running live in RAM, every day. I've never been happier and cannot imagine going back! With a new computer on the cards I will still mostly use live mx distros without persistence. For me, persistence defeats the purpose of being live (in this context).
@bertvantol96692 жыл бұрын
Max -Paul, can you explain in more details how you made a Live USB, loading and running from RAM. And why not persistance ?? In my opinion, persistence makes your USB ultra portable ....
@TheQuixoticRambler2 жыл бұрын
@@bertvantol9669 Hi, yeah I just opened up the remaster tool and followed the instructions. Choices were clear and unambiguous. Great tool and great interface design in that crucial regard. As for persistence there's no right or wrong, just user needs and preferences. For me, I just wanted to run a live system every time. Partly cos my hd may be on the way out, but mostly cos I like the speed and responsiveness of an OS operating mostly or entirely in RAM. The remaster tool offers a persistence and non-persistence option, btw. Portability is not a consideration for me in this instance. But, of course, you're right. If portability is your thing then persistence is handy, for sure. Oh yeah, used balenaetcher to install new snapshot iso onto a separate pendrive. Also a brutally clear and simple app to use. I cannot offer any further advice on "how" to use those tools as I cannot remember any individual steps taken. I'm no expert. I am not that guy! Just dabbling and enjoying the experience.
@atarorna302 жыл бұрын
The "remaster" tool is for when you are running on a live (persistent) USB (that you made with "MX live USB Maker"). It brings all the updates and programs you installed into the iso, "remastering" it. This is the best feature all distros should have imo, the live USB persistent options. You carry your MX on a USB and run it on any machine, to get rid of the USB "lag" (if needed) you do a "frugal install", it's really amazing.

Yep MX is the one distro that could get me away from Arch, I have it on another partition and play with it once in a while. They are doing a good job. I think we need a set of tools that are in every distro and every desktop environment. Stop making KDE or GNOME settings and make a set of Linux User settings and Linux System Settings that could be the same on every system. That would help things in the long run. They would have to be good enough to use them instead of the various other DE specific provided tools that do many of the same functions though.

You don't need to use dd to create a bootable USB from your Snapshot. If you use the MX Tool Live USB Maker, it will identify either an MX/antiX ISO or not. If an MX/antiX ISO is detected, a USB will be created in a way that all the live persistence options can be used. If a normal ISO is detected, it will just use dd to create a normal bootable USB.

MX Linux is my daily driver for my media system. It just works and never gives me a issue. The 2 issues I have had I got a answer from the Dev in less than 20 minutes of leaving the message. Mine is the old Cinnamon desktop that they use to have in MX-19.1 but they took it out of the software app... :-( If I ever have to reinstall I will have to install MX Xfce and install Cinnamon on top of it. I like Xfce but Cinnamon is my choice of desktops. Bonus! MX makes a great rescue USB drive as I have used it several times. I have use it for Ubuntu and Arch systems to fix stuff on the systems.. You showed a lot of UI tools here, but for an experienced user I don't think any of them would be interesting. The less graphical UI the better. Once you know how to do stuff in the terminal, you are less and less interested in distro hopping, and most tools would work the same from a system to another (even non Linux). But that's great that you enjoy these tools. I bet a lot of people are too, and that's great if people are more interested in opensource systems thanks to these.

Post #7 in that link has the same image but is less saturated and doesn't look as good. Both of his posts have a link to the original image which are 1920 x 1200.
