Wholeheartedly agree with the focus on Cisco certs! Those are the ones recruiters are looking for, and it's not difficult to transfer your skills from Cisco to other vendors if/when the need arises.

Thanks David for this video and I agree with you. As I am working towards my CCNP, I am working on the ENCOR and then the ENSLD. I have dabbled in DevNet Associate but shifted my emphasis from the DevNet certificate to three specific things: Docker, pyATS, and Ansible (with a side of Nornir) because network automation isn't going anywhere, and I want to stay relevant. When I studied Cisco DevNet, I really lost interest about half way through it. Therefore, for me, I want to be a network engineer with some DevNet experience/development experience hence the shift to CCNP ENCOR and ENSLD. I am also going to study Juniper stuff as well as because my current employer is starting to deploy Juniper firewalls in our network cores. I know nothing about JUNOS and I hate feeling lost while trying to work our network teams when working on the firewalls.

Does your job (or job promotion) require the certs, or are you just collecting certs? If you are currently working in IT, ask your manager if they are hiring CCNP cert holders. If you are unemployed even with the CCNA, you might want to hold off collecting certs -- companies are looking for portfolios of IT-related work, not just certs.

@MickeyAlderson Жыл бұрын
Interesting opinions here (emphasis on "opinions"), but it depends on the purpose of the certification and why you're getting it. If you're just trying to "get past the gatekeeper", i.e. checking off a box on a resume to get an interview, then yes, CCNA is a good idea. If you're trying to actually learn networking and the basics of how things work, CompTIA Network+ and Security+ are absolutely the place to start. CompTIA will teach actual networking concepts from a non-biased perspective so you can work with any vendor more seamlessly, as opposed to Cisco teaching you the "Cisco way" which isn't necessarily the best thing moving forward for your career advancement.

JNCIS and JNCIP are valuable certs if persuing Juniper. Personally being knowledgeable in Juniper has done wonders for me and I believe the architecture is better. I still find it hard to believe the majority of Cisco IOS uses a startup config and running config, very archaic compared to a candidate config and commit function. That being said CCNA will teach you more then the JNCIA from a networking perspective as a newbie. From a security perspective would look to Palo Alto and Fortinet, these are the top 2 vendors, honestly dont see firepower as the most popular option and would avoid unless already in your day to day job. I personally have seen Palo, fortinet, checkpoint and juniper more then firepower. Start with CCNA then adapt to personal circumstances, dont just mindlessly follow Cisco.. IMO
@yesthejets33772 жыл бұрын
Yea David is a liar, Juniper is used so much among ISPs, it’s got roll back configs, it’s built on Linux so it’s automation friendly, it’s cheaper etc etc, the only Cisco cert worth a damn is CCNA, after that u don’t need a CCNP or above, most organizations can’t afford a completely Cisco network & it’s has too many proprietary technologies, I agree with everything u said

I was planning on last year to take the new CNA but I actually got bored with it. It was so shallow and not really deep. I’m so taking a python class now I’m going to get certified in that, then I’m probably gonna go through and maybe Deb had associate and then I was debating should I get the cc in a just to have it on my résumé as not expire or just put in the work and get the CCNP. He. Unfortunately with me I’m 60 so my career is coming towards an end and the payment for the certifications is quite high so I was just thinking I could save $300 if I just did the devnet and then the CCMP is it even say doable since my last certification was so old even though I still play round the stuff I never got a job in it and per se, actual networking, because I was doing networking in my telecommunication engineering position

I just passed my Net+ 2 days ago. I can already see how a CCNA would help me get a pay bump whilst the Net+ was good to refresh my CompTIA A+ and get me prepped for the CCNA . I'd say the CCNA won't ever be irrelevant in the networking space considering the networking principles that are taught and required for a career regardless of vendor. I'm currently working in an MSP and a lot of the devices we provide are Ciscos. At least half if not more and understanding the Ciscos would help with the other vendor devices anyways. So I'm going for my CCNA within 6 months this year.
