I don't know if you fall into the camp that twin-stick shooters are not SHMUPS, but I highly recommend Never Awake. It's available on Steam, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. It's by the same people who did Vritra Complete Edition. It's a twin-stick shooter where you are stuck in the mind of a girl who is in a coma and your mission is to wake her up. The story is told through diary entries that you unlock as you progress through the game. If you beat the final boss of stage 7A, you unlock challenges in certain stages you played throughout the game. If you beat those challenges, you unlock stage 7B and that's where the games fangs are because 7B is BRUTAL. The final boss of 7A is no cakewalk either, but 7B is BRUTAL. I highly recommend Never Awake.
