Unfortunately in my rural town we have no Starbucks, no Domino's Pizza, any fast food places or chain stores whatsoever. I am almost 48, I have no medical insurance and just had my shift at our local food co-op cut. I have under $8,000 in my retirement fund. Physically my joints are shot, I am in pain all the time, so finding a job I can do is hard. I have over $2,000 in medical bills I can't pay. My husband makes just enough money that I cannot get any help at all. It is a very scary place to be in.

@oralpowers79323 жыл бұрын
The majority of benefits only apply to people with at least 5 years with the company. Most companies require a year of full time service before they cover anything. And things like stock options are usually only available once a year. So you could be waiting a year and a half before they let you in the plan. Costco in Canada would give university students full time benefits for their summer hours. So 4 years of university and 4 years of summer work and you would be eligible for 4 years of seniority but only if you continued working at Costco. Most jobs are 90 days or less in duration, once summer or christmas is over your done. These companies also contract out everything they possibly can. And find another job before you leave because it will be very difficult to find another job without any references and they don't give any. It's better to be a new immigrant the government will provide unemployment benefits, free training and or apprenticeship, housing plus a good job with benefits. Many corporations need more diversity, charities are also helping out to make life more then equitable.

Those are great benefits! We always preferred to work overtime at our main jobs as the pay was so much better at time and a half. I would also point out that by putting more than what's needed to get the 401k match creates quite a "tax pickle" later in life and that you're better off just getting the match and investing elsewhere such as a Roth IRA or taxable investments where the income can be tax free. Additionally, I've never understood the idealization of pensions. They never covered more than half of all workers and the income is taxed as regular income. To add insult to injury, after age 72, when Required Minimum Distributions come calling, this will push you up into the next tax bracket making this "expensive" money indeed as well as increasing your medicare premiums AND making 85% of your social security taxable...not too mention losing you the 0% Long Term Capital Gains/Qualified Dividends rate. I know many seniors with pension income that this is happening to and they're paying a ridiculous amount of income tax and many wish they had saved in different vehicles.
@33Jenesis3 жыл бұрын
I have been thinking about this, too. I am in my 50’s and can retire now getting $40k a year pretax pension plus over 1mil in tax deferred account. I am planning to take 20k out of that acct annually after retirement and invest it somewhere else or just put into a savings acct. I am not waiting until 72 to get it out.
@tomj5283 жыл бұрын
@@33Jenesis That's a good plan for your situation and you've figured out that you don't have to spend the distribution, you may want to look at instead converting that money to a Roth IRA where the money and it's earnings are free from taxes and RMDs forever.
@33Jenesis3 жыл бұрын
@@tomj528 that’s a terrific idea! Forgot about Roth IRA (i do have one at Fidelity but not contributing in the past 5 years). I can put $20/30k annually into Roth and get it diversified.
@tomj5283 жыл бұрын
@@33Jenesis For 2021 the contribution limits for the Roth IRA are $6,000 and $7000 if you're over 50. Of course, you can convert as much as you like but it will increase your taxable income. Interestingly enough, you can use the form 8880 retirement saver's credit as a shield to usher your money into your Roth completely tax free if you can make the numbers work. I craft our 1040 each and every year. For 2020 I converted almost an entire year's worth of current spending, all new contributions went to our Roth IRAs and we socked another 6 months of spending away in taxable accounts as well, all without a penny of federal or state income tax. It amazing what you can do simply by studying the tax forms and publications and applying a little logic.
@33Jenesis3 жыл бұрын
@@tomj528 My taxable income is $60k a year. I keep it between $50 to $60k a year for about 10 years (saving $20k after tax income annually to buy a place with cash this year). The tax amt on $60k is acceptable. I will look up the form to see how I can move $ from defined retirement savings into Roth. I can live on $20k a year because I have no debt and have company medical/dental (in retirement).
