Great video and I agree with 99% of your points and I certainly don't think you're talking absolute rubbish. :) But can I put a couple of points across? First of all whenever you buy a new / secondhand modern car you're in negative equity the second you buy it. It will need parts, servicing, MOT's etc etc and it will depreciate rapidly. Second, if you buy a classic car as an investment you're buying for the wrong reasons. Those with money are buying classics as investments and it's so annoying. Most of us buy them to enjoy them, you'll never make money on a classic car. It will need spare parts, insuring, maybe some bodywork at some point, some people have to pay for storage, yet congratulate themselves on selling it for two grand more than they paid for it. Others put them in a locked garage and hardly touch them until selling time, starting them up now and again to keep the engine free. But these cars then need recommissioning with tyres, brakes, and all the usual stuff a car needs when not used regularly. My classic car is worth around £12k so it's not a big money car, but I use it as much as possible. It's a better car for it as before I bought it, it sat for 8 years and ran rough as a badgers bum. But now it's been serviced and fully recommissioned It's a reliable car capable of daily use if required. What do you think? Oh and BTW, I've subbed. 👍

First of all thanks for the lengthy comment, definitely some valid points made. I think regarding negative equity on any new car is definitely unavoidable, but I do believe there are classic and retro cars in the market which you can buy and excluding annual maintenance you can own, use (fairly regularly) and still appreciate getting you to a point of at least neutral equity. Classic car ownership of any type will cost money one way or the other, but I believe there are some great examples you can buy, jump in and drive, for minimal outlay! Also having a car of which you have invested money in and at least holds that value is great for motivation! Keep an eye for my next video which is all about some bargain classic buys which I believe do just this! Thanks for the Sub and comment. James

The white Simca Matra coupe had been off the road for 36 years. I could just about make out the plate UVX888S. Last taxed until the end of April 1988, and last logbook change was in March 1989, so could still be an undriveable project even back then. That's the only data I can find for it.

Great upload! Can you do more? Only a couple of q's. During my restoration I found that the whole 'prof. doing up/restouration' world or scene has changed. Clubs, former 'brand ambassadors', most classic owners have changed, not wanting to work on the car anymore, even worse, not be bothered to help, assist in getting others to get(keep) them on the road! Excessive money rules the world, supportive technology understanding has been phased out. Natters, fairs are only shows of pride, as no owner is willing /able to really help you in your quest to get your project any further. Even old parts are protected, seen as investments, rather than helping others to get their car complete. Does the friendly classic car industry still exist. Till date, all enthousiast oldtimer owners meet in pubs, events, hardly enjoying a beer at another enthousiast at his home whilst enjoying their mutual hobby... Too much still this money business is portrait as reliving old dreams iso current nightmares... spend over 30K, not on yhe road, and no enthousiasts to co-live the dream of your past. Where are the classic enthousiast, at least not in the north of the UK

I have a load of episodes in the pipeline 💯, so please subscribe. Im planning to do 2/3 a week. It's a very good point about clubs and support, the landscape has changed a lot even in the last 10 years. We used to have a really good forum support online for most marques, which although seemed to be too often the blind leading the blind, there were generally good 'how to' sections and local meet ups. Now with the exception of a few, you are mostly limited to Facebook groups. Classic British brands like MGOC and Mercedes, Porsche etc seem to still maintain a loyal owners club on a paid subscription, but the less popular brands need a new platform or format to discuss. I generally use the Google events search and find the best way is to try and attend the local meetups or events and meet people face to face, the old fashioned way. But there is a void there which needs filled for a platform which can bring classic and retro car owners together. Maybe it's something we can do with this channel? Open to suggestions. Jimmy

That Jag probably is not worth spending that much money on, however a good X300 is a rapid, comfortable cruiser and a nice place to be, I have one. The AJ16 engine [the last Jaguar straight 6] is very reliable and does not suffer from timing chain issues, the V8 does! The engine slightly modified is in the Aston Martin DB7 early models. The advice as ever is to buy the best one you can afford whatever make, then be prepared for some expense. The more expensive it was new the more it will cost....
@jimmyscarclub
@jimmyscarclub Ай бұрын
You are spot on Brian, actually I think the X300 will probably end up being of greater value due to the lesser numbers produced as this is normally the case. There are better examples out there for £5k which will save you the time and money investing in trying to renovate something like this. Spend the most you can only be best example, be patient and the right car will come along. Sounds simple in theory 🤣 thanks for the comment, keep an eye out for some other videos coming soon!

Good luck on your new channel, ive subscribed. I let my heart rule my head and never make money. I then get attached to a substandard car, im in negative equity and it makes no sense apart from knowing that the work youve done you can be proud of but some body work issues should be a red flag which ive ignored and now paying the price even though i like driving it.

Thank you @vauxhallman7157, yeah it's always difficult when you are passionate. I think the key is try and get a balance between sensible and scratching an itch, classic and retro car ownership is suppose to be fun and a hobby also, not just a sterile transaction! I guess the ideal is you can get a great car and not loose a fortune. But it doesn't always work like that 🤣 thanks for the subscribe. Jimmy

There are something like 11 Matra/Simca Bagheeras in the UK and a mate of mine owns 5 of them. The engine is an underpowered turkey and parts support, even in France, is practically non existent. Definitely one to avoid. The Herald is NOT a 12/50, those were only sold as saloons (with a sunroof as standard) The good thing about Heralds is that they are Meccano cars and everything is available and most is pretty cheap. But you need to be skilled to build them correctly. A real nice genuine convertible is more like £9k these days. Do it yourself and you'll have a fun drive and a bit of profit.

Wow he has 5 Simca Bagheeras. That is pretty unique and interesting, if hes interested in featuring on the show please drop him my email as they would be some episode! info@jimmyscarclub.com The herald is an interesting one, I did some further reading and seems the 12/50 was a saloon/2 door coupe. So seems someone has chopped this themselves, which I know was quite a popular thing to do back in the day! Imagine doing that today on a modern car 🤣 Even so for a workshop chop it looks pretty good, the car suits it and I think If I was looking for one then convertible 'conversion' would be the one for me. Thanks Jimmy
@stephenboitoult8774
@stephenboitoult8774 Ай бұрын
@@jimmyscarclub Sorry, I wasn't clear! This car isn't and never was a 12/50. The 12/50 was a sort of interim GL model built between 62 and 65, it was always a 2 door saloon and featured a slightly uprated 52bhp 1200 engine, sunroof as standard, 2 tone paint and disc front brakes. The 948cc engine was in early MKI Heralds from 59-61 and died with the Herald S (I had a 61 Herald S Convertible) around 62. This 66 car is probably just a cooking 1200cc 48bhp model. No way to tell if it was always a convertible without the comission number GA*****DL for a saloon or GA*****CV for a convertible. The 12/50 carries a GD prefix. There is a quite pronounced value difference between a genuine CV coded convertible and a converted DL coded saloon, even though, to all intents and purposes, they are the same car, changing a saloon tub for a convertible one is a perfectly legal bolt off bolt on swap. But the originality (however much of that is left) goes away with the roof! Heralds, like Landrovers, are "Triggers broom" cars! I'll have a word with my mate re the Bagheeras, but don't hold your breath, he's very secretive!

As soom as i see thing's like rappers wheels on something like that Herald i steer well clear, keep a car standard, anything with the mark of the chav will have lots of other issues Advice i was given by a skilled motor engineer, only buy a car that you can road test, to ensure that all the gears, brakes, suspemsion, steering and engine work, if its over 50 years old replace the complete wiring harness braking and fuel system Only buy a complete and original car, avoid anything customised , his words custom cars are worthless scrap And ensure you get as much provenance, manuals, spares etc included in the deal You would be surprised at how many sellers try to flog stuff by seperate negotiation His words tell them to stick it up their arse And make sure the original registration is included, you would be surprised at how many people sell a car but have already flogged the plate You lose the cars history, he said no orig reg or fitted with an unissued orkneys number, its scrap value only I took his advice , and avoided lots of wheeler dealer's, and housing estate crooks telling porkies After looking at over 30 cars i found the perfect one Still got it 30 years later and about to spend some money on it, as it owes me nothing now I have looked at a few cars for friends on ebay, but its full of bullshitters, liar's, con artist's and imbeciles Best bet to buy a classic, decide which car you want, join the owners club, attend a few meets and speak to owners, look at a few cars, the stick a wanted advert in the club mag, or choose a car sold through it, they rarely get sold online or at auction,
