Born and raised there - left at the age of 33 back in 2008, and I've never moved back. St. Catharines is like the "Flint Michigan" of Canada: An economically depressed small city that used to be part of the auto manufacturing boom in that corner of the continent. Now it's a commuter town, and there's hardly a good job to be found in the city. It's been a long time since there ever was such prosperity there. I've only been back twice in 14 years, and both times it was enough to shock the homesickness out of me.

I was born and raised in st catharines left 4 years ago to Edmonton alberta because I couldn't find work near by or couldn't afford a car to drive an hour to a job. I will never move back to st catharines or the niagara region only. Only way I would move back if I won the lottery and 30 minutes away from the city's on a farm land

I’m a Canadian registered nurse who’s been living & working in the USA for the past 27 years. I was thinking of returning to my home. I know I’ll find work as the nursing shortage is bad there. I’d like to live near or outside the city and work at the area hospitals. I have so many fond memories of drinking coffee in cafes & checking out the local bands etc. I actually used to live in Welland, but really preferred going to St. Cats & NOTL. Great video!

@@livinginniagara Hey man thanks! I’m getting very excited! I thought it would be difficult but I’m finding it’s going to be very easy. Bring a copy of my drivers abstract from the DMV down here, renew my Ontario driver’s license, open a bank account and get an apartment! It’s actually much easier than all the immigration hoops that I have had to negotiate down here. Plus the great added benefit of no longer having to pay exorbitant fees for healthcare insurance! I’m fortunately very healthy so that’s a huge plus. I’ll be driving home from Arizona, probably in the late spring so I have about 3 or 4 months to liquidate everything and prepare for the big move. So exciting!

Sadly the homeless and drug issue is something pretty much every city over 50,000 is dealing with now. I live closer to Port D. so you don't see it here, but pretty much whenever I ride down St Paul, I'll see people openly using and dealing. I'd also list as a pro, the city is fairly compact in size. Despite it becoming more congested over the last couple of years, it's quite easy and quick to bike/walk to places.

Nice video. Can't say that the downtown is a pro for St. Catharines. It still needs vast improvements, especially in residential dwellings, ground level retail, commercial rent, facades, etc.

I agree, downtown certainly has its challenges. It takes progressive property owners to spend money improving old buildings to create great places to attract businesses! It’s definitely a work in progress!

@@livinginniagara At least Brock University, the theatre, and Meridian Centre have lifted the downtown significantly.
