This was great! Great way to start my day. Coffee and a laugh! SO true though so true..I often have people ask me why I need a wheelchair if I can stand up. I've even had people say I'm faking it! LOL Thanks for the video!
@NicholetteBrian2 жыл бұрын
Haha We are glad that you enjoyed it and had a laugh! I have had people say I am faking it as well and literally try to tell me to get out of a wheelchair while in a store.. We didn't include that one cause we only had so much time to do the video but I relate to that!

I was rolling into my local grocery store to pick up my prescription and one of the workers saw me coming in and squatted to my level and asked if I had everything all aright. Like seriously I am just getting into the store I didn't even have time to get through the automatic opening doors before he asked me. I noticed he didn't ask anyone else coming in.

haha ash thank you! We did it to be funny but yes most people just want to help and have good intentions. We believe that all people are good just some people aren't so we have to stay careful. We are glad you liked our video!

Haven't had anyone comment in public as of late. But the one thing I always hated was when people would ask, "Wanna race?" Do they often ask able bodied people to have a footrace with them in public? If they don't ask such question then they shouldn't ask a person in a wheelchair unless they know that person on a personal level. Just a friendly announcement🙂

Lol yeah we have seen that happen too. We just did the ones we thought of but maybe we can include that in a future episode!

I love the video and have experienced all but the avoider. I also want to add that us wheelchair user’s should be understanding of other’s perception of us. It can be tricky. The over helper’s, and the people that ignore us for example. Some of the ignorer’s might have been helper’s but encountered disabled people in the past that were rude when they tried to help so now they just don’t bother to help anymore. Some of the over helper’s can just be nurturing people that want to help people in general, if not to try to make our lives easier, but to also make themselves feel better. Some of us seem to pick and choose when we “expect” people to know when they should help us. Like holding doors. I approach that just like when I was able bodied. There are some people that don’t hold doors open for anybody, there are some that will stand there holding it open until you walk the hundred feet to get there, and there are people that will run to cut you off to open it for you. As a wheelchair user I just do my own thing as I would when I was walking, and never expect anything from other’s. The only time I’ll be stern with somebody is if them helping is going to put me in more danger, for example when transferring. Sometimes people can throw off your momentum while transferring, and you end up on the floor. I usually thank people for offering, but let them know I have a certain way of doing it. As for people,asking question’s, I try to educate as much as possible. Of course I’ll divert overly personal questions, or try to answer in a humorous way. The relater’s can be annoying, but I’m so used to it from when I rode motorcycles. 90% of the time I stopped at a gas station, or even in general somebody would walk up and be like nice bike, I used to ride too,but had a friend or blah blah that crashed or died or something. I would just be like there’s a thousand ways to die anytime and anywhere. Anyway, keep up the good work ya’ll, and I think I win the longest youtube comment ever lol.

hi this is strange to watch because i have been it a chair my whole life and i get these question and been through all of those to an exact. the not paying attention is common. Because i am lower than people sometimes people don't notice me and that's the way it is. I don't waste my energy blaming them. I have short 5 word pre prepared answers so most questions and i just answer, most of the time it a real question and the sex question depends from person to person. If someone is really annoying and keeps asking to help i literally find something for them to do, when they get sick of it they leave. The last thing is. the interaction with me might be the only exposure to disability they get. I try to make it positive for them in hopes that the next person get treated better. If someone says i'm an inspiration i ask them why and say thanks or say their life must be really boring lol.

We are both glad to see that others relate and understand these 5 reactions. We didn't know if it was just nicholette or if everyone has experienced that. We hope it helps some people consider their reaction to disability in public and that it entertains others. Thank you for watching it!

The avoider 😂 true story I once had to hold the door for someone 😂 not them for me but me for them 😂 oh and one day I was at the grocery store and this older lady wouldn’t leave me alone 😂 the she asked me 3 times if I was alone and if I needed help. My girlfriend was in the line buying ham and cheese so I was by the side 😂 and the lady wouldn’t leave my side.

Thank you for sharing and we know it can be discouraging or frustrating to experience what you feel is disrespectful and tough to deal with but change comes from educating people about issues, normalizing disability and approaching it with solution based thinking. So we hope that in the future when someone does that to you that you can let them know "hey I think its a little rude to be so forward ," or tell them it makes you uncomfortable. Don't let it deter you from going in public - own who you are and confidently approach situations and you will see a difference. its easier said then down but it can happen - we believe in you! Part of why we do these videos is to try and shift perspectives little by little and encourage people to learn about disability. Never let anything bring you down and stay strong! 💖

I go to the gym often(gym rat) and often people come up and say how I inspire them. I usually respond "that's great" From time to time depending who the person is and my mood, for example an elderly gentlemen in his I'd say mid 70's told me I inspire him so I replied "You inspire me" He asked why? I replied "Because I hope when I'm your age I can still go to the gym!" LOL :)

Eye Opening humor… but truths unfortunately, some people just don’t get it. I think you should carry one of those Loud Air Cans that will blast all the people away… when they bother you! Brave step instituting humor , with every day issues. I thought for a minute ….it was young Justin Bieber in the blonde wig, harassing you! lol
