This is such sound advice. Thank you Simon! I played Mizuno MP-14's for 17 years and then got married, kids etc = less time for golf let alone practice! So for the last few years, I've tried game-improvement irons (Wilson FG Tour V6 and Srixon Z765's). You hit the nail on the head with that comment about aesthetics! If you don't like what you see, you won't play well and that totally happened with the Wilson's. After watching this, I've decided to buy a set of used Mizuno MP-32 irons I found on eBay. I remember saying that the only iron that could replace my MP-14's were the MP-32's, so I pulled the trigger right away. Thank you Simon for opening my mind to going back to the irons I actually like!

In 2007 I went to get myself a new set of irons. I was told that as an 18 hcp I should be nowhere near the mizuno MP60s. However, the look and buttery feel meant that I just would try any other model. I aspired to become good enough to use those irons effectively. I still use these irons in 2022. The point being made here is spot on. The mental side of the game is enormously important. If you like the look and feel of a club, you will make it work.

Cannot fault this video at all. Absolutely right. Common sense. Especially the coach teaching you. The swing is the swing, impact position is impact position. Could your game benefit from " new irons?" Is the question. Nice one, again Simon

I love going back to this video Simon. I built a bag at the start of lockdown on the Dutch equivalent of gumtree and I got a set of Callaway x12, reg flex, graphite, 3-PW for €80. Oldies but great. I also got THE BUG for buying 2nd hand clubs and trying to flip them and looking to improve everything I have BUT I watch this and it grounds me and I remind myself “ANDY - You play 2-4 times a month, you don’t need to find a set of shiny Mizunos you need to PRACTICE!”
@slowster29455 жыл бұрын
I got brand new irons just last week. #1 reason for the change was shaft. I wanted to eliminate the two-way tolerance and we did that successfully. An added bonus was an improvement in flight characteristics. I now have a more penetrating, climbing ball flight instead of a ballooning one. Also the lengths were a bit whacky on my old set. Went from DCI 962's with TT R300 to Z785 with Modus 105 stiff. Couldn't be happier!

I was at my local Goodwill with my wife and I found a partial set of Wilson Staff FG51 Tour Blades (2,3,5,7), which I picked up for $1.99 each. I bought them for a laugh mainly because of how ridiculous they are, but the 2 and 7 have found their way into my bag, and I find myself pulling the 2 iron out more than I thought I would. I'm a high handicapper, and honestly, I probably shouldn't have a forged bladed 2 iron from the late 80's in my bag, but I really enjoy hitting it, and when it's smoothed, there is no better feeling. And there is no better looking golf club than a blade, in my opinion.
@patrickwhitehead75845 жыл бұрын
@vachief it is EXCEPTIONALLY over done. Im a 19ish and I play blades. 1) i believe my game is improving faster than it was with improvment irons 2) i just cant make good contact with GI irons because I find the way they look behind the ball to be distracting
@macaulaycarefoot88505 жыл бұрын
@@patrickwhitehead7584 I agree. I'm a 13 HC and used my dad's GI irons a while back when we went since I forgot my clubs. They look so chunky behind the ball I felt like I needed to change my swing to get under it even more. There's a lot to be said about simply being confident when looking down at the club.

Total logic, something normally not applied to club purchasing. What you stated in this video should be seriously considered by anyone thinking they must have new clubs. It boils down to "You can't buy a good game." The best statement you made was how a golfer feels about their clubs at address. After all, golf is so dependent on the psychological aspects of the game. Spot on.

I feel better now for getting fitted for new MMC’s seeing that I ticked every box including the inheritance part! Went from Ping G’s to Cleveland 588 Forged CB’s and started hitting the ball so much better. Lofts were very traditional and they weren’t fitted for me. MMC’s looked just as good, more forgiveness, longer but predictable, and felt amazing! Would like to find a set of blades on eBay in regular flex just to mess around with though. Great video! Love your honesty and practicality!

To add another reason "for"... I love flipping used clubs, learning a new set, seeing if a specific shaft makes a difference and so on... And trying not to spend much during the process... I'm currently in love with my second set of 2010 Ansers. Didn't love them last time because they had project X shafts... these ones have KBS tours😉

Thanks for talking me off the ledge. I just started, and can't stop looking at all the fancy sets online. I had lessons this summer. My father is a HUGE golf fan, but doesn't play anymore. He gave me his clubs: Lynx Parallax irons w/ black stainless heads & carbon shafts circa 1990. I remember them always living in his car growing up Some elbow grease and a new set of grips, and I am ready to ROCK. Love the look and the family history, but they REALLY let me know when I flub a shot. I plan to use them for at least a year, and maybe buy new for Christmas 2021.
@nielssbylvendahl20235 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon. It think you nailed it with your first question (the WHY?!) When it comes to buying new golf equipment, the most important (and hardest) thing is to be honest with yourself. Why do I want (and potentially also need) a new set of irons? To me, the most important thing is the looks. I've tried with (two) sets of irons, that offered me the forgiveness I need, but I never came to terms with the looks. Now I game a set of irons that has not given me extra yardage or anything, but I just love hitting them, and I enjoy every round I play.

About to get my first genuine set of irons after playing 2nd hand clubs for the past 5-10 years. I'm 21 years old using graphite shafts, not ideal. Handicap ~14, going Titleist T100 planning for the future. I recommend doing to multiple fittings over different days, as I did, comparing results and advice for best value. Might be great one day with a set of clubs but then fitted again and hopeless. Or fitter might try and sell you the most expensive clubs and not care about you genuine game

Absolutely spot on. I'm 64 now and on my 3rd full set of clubs in 50 yrs. Had half set at the beginning. A very good friend of mine who was a decent semi pro footballer got the golf bug. Has had numerous expensive sets and still plays off 17. Two things I told him. 1.If I bought the most expensive football boots available I would never ever be as good as you. So why buy expensive clubs. The other after he spent £1000 on customs fitted Tiger Sharks I said You should have spent £30 on a Lyle and Scott jumper at least it would keep you warm!!!

Love this video!! I got back into the game after a few years out with kids being young, and having limited time and funds, and I have had so much fun trying everything out after being away from it for a little bit (new irons, old blades, ping eye 2's, mizuno blades, etc...). I love what you said about not being a perfectionist. So true!! I fell a little bit for the new iron advertisements, and found out pretty quick that the lofts are the difference in distance, and in reality, my scores are good if I putt and chip well. Anyway, love your videos, especially the copper Ping eye 2 video! I learn alot from what you put out there, keep it up!!!

Honest review, it’s down to the person who swings the club and whilst you get the ‘feel good factor’ with new clubs you should always invest in lessons either prior to the new golf season or the winter months. If it’s only a few it will help as you may have fallen into bad habits and your local pro for example can give you some pointers. I’m not a Golf Pro but someone who has benefited from lessons 😀

Thank you very much, all very good points and sound advice. You did very well in this video. What you might consider doing next to compliment this video, where/how. to start on selecting a new set. Take it from the type of golfer, how much money to invest, how many times do you play a week, month, etc. You had me when said there is a chunky club and smaller type club head; chunky more forgiveness & distance, smaller means control, better feed back less distance. Very nice video

T Mac Okay, I'm what you would refer to as a perfectionist. Do to age I am losing some flexibility resulting in shorter distance. I went to club champion to get fit for a new set of irons. I tried many different irons and different shafts. I was surprised at the different results from the various combinations of irons and shafts. I ended up with the perfect set of irons for me. Yes, it was more expensive but also less expensive not having to play the equipment roulette game. Added bonus is that my confidence and golf game have improved a lot!

Great vlog. I got back into golf 2.5 yrs ago. Researched the internet and ended up with x14 pros! LOVE THEM!!! A fellow member is ecstatic that his newly fitted ap2's fly further but do I care? No, because I know loft! Be great to see a old v new iron test, with a true loft represented. Fairly new to yr channel but liking it, blame Mr Wiltshire, keep it up
@jaybyrne45625 жыл бұрын
This comment actually made me laugh! You know loft? Callaway X14 Pro lofts 3=21 4=23.5 5=26 6=29 7=33 8=37 9=42 pw=46.5 Titleist AP2 718 lofts 3=21 4=24 5=27 6=30 7=34 8=38 9=42 pw=46 So your irons are actually stronger lofted in the majority of clubs except the PW which is half a degree weaker. Also if you want to see old vs bewtest- The average golfer did one recently with really interesting results.

brilliant video - was lucky enough to get a really good set for my first set but it took at least 18 months before I caught up with them :-) More recently I got down from 24 to 16 and went to buy new clubs. The pro asked me to hit shots with a variety of clubs (that I thought I wanted) and told me (and showed me on the trackman) that my good shots were no better with the "better" clubs but my bad shots were way worse. His advice was to focus on eliminating the bad shots, work on consistency in swing and THEN look at changing my clubs. That saved me a couple of thousand. Clubs don't make the player and no-one wants to be that guy with all the gear and no idea!!

Great advice. Prior to this past year, I had been an occasional golfer (probably not played more than 40-50 rounds in 20 years. Over the last year I’ve started playing 2-3 times a week. I still play with a 2007 Titliest 775CB irons to a current 14index. I’ve tested newer clubs but I have not found any meaningful difference vs the clubs I have. My bigger problem seems to be the shot to shot variability in my technique.

Refreshingly honest videos. I really like them. I'm retired getting back into golf after about a 20 years break. My Cobra Tour II irons still look pretty good but I think I'm gonna try an Ebay JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro in a 4i and a Forged 7i just to see how they play before I commit to the whole mixed set. My long irons was the weak spot in my game.

I have bought 2 sets of irons in the last 3.5 years. I bought the first set (M1s) to replace a 20 year old Yonex irons which probably could not be regripped any more. 4 months ago I replaced the M1s with i210s. I had improved and crucially the shafts in the M1s no longer worked well for me. Obviously I could have bought new shafts for the M1s but I do not regret buying the i210s and I cannot see me buying another set for 5+ years

Great stuff Simon - think you got that just right. Just about to pull the trigger on some new clubs myself - in 50 year golf I've only had 2 sets! Used my Dads set until I was 15 then he bought me some Donnay graphite shafted irons. They were great as you could also play Tennis with them. Had them for 35 years or so and I enjoyed the occasional good shot during that time. You really dont NEED new clubs. However, I have fallen in love with the Mizuno MP-20 Mbs and I'm asking them out for a date next week. Wish me luck! Keep up the good work (as my teachers never said to me)...

I am a mid handicap golfer , sometimes I hit my irons pure other times not, I am quite sure I would do the very same thing with new irons, I golf with Ping I-10s. I’ve just had a lesson this week and was asked what I hoped to achieve. More distance obviously and a repeatable swing. Upshot is I’ve committed to eight lessons over the winter without playing golf but practicing what I’m shown. I’ve played erratic golf for 40 years with a horrible swing. Next spring I’m hoping it’s different.

I have been playing for 6-8 months now. I play anywhere from 2 to 4 times a week. At least 2 times for sure. I have gotten lessons judt recently. I can hit the ball pretty damm far so Im not really looking for new irons for distance. I just recently bought a rouge driver because I had wanted a new driver it was a difficult decision but im glad I made it. I can hit this driver 20-30 yard further then the other one. So its making me wonder if I should maybe get new irons. Again not for distance just for better performance. I just dont know what to do. I love this game if I could I'd be playing everyday all day.

Thanks Simon, a lot of common sense there. Unlike some of your contemporaries.

Played Nike pro combo's for 6 years ,got talked in to AP3 2 years ago ,hated them, hooked them , and distance had no consistency plus they felt dead .Went for a fitting in June and came out with Mizuno jpx 919 tours with KBS lite x shafts .Back to playing better and love the look and feel .An expensive mistake with the AP3 that I won't make again .

Just bought a new set of custom fitted Ping i210 - 1 degree flat. £700. Just sold my old Ping i20s in same spec on eBay for £90. If you have a decent idea of what suits you eBay is sooooooo much of a better deal. Especially as if they don’t suit yiu can get your money back by delisting them!

@@davidgroom9667 did you get fit for irons, or get fit for i210's? If you're going to get "fit" for some clubs, surely you try at least 3 or 4 different heads?

I've had mine for 19 years and I was thinking about getting a new set of irons, but maybe I just need to get them fitted?

Love this! More like it please! Pretty applicable for me… I’m thinking about getting a blade three iron and four iron to make my set a combo set with the rest as muscle backs... I hate the thick soled long irons that I have now! Thoughts on combo sets?

I loved this video. Thanks for the honest assessment of what's important. I was gonna buy a new set of irons. Now I'm gonna pay for a fit to see just what really is best for me (a high handicap with inconsistent ball strike!) Super video mate, thanks!
